Thoughts on Joc Pederson as our DH? Joc DHs vs RHP and then big Bill is DH vs LHP.

Joc was solid last year and would give us a power bat.

His bat would fit so well. I it wish he didn’t let himself get so fat that he clogs DH how. I wouldn’t want to completely block DH for Hoskins and Yelich at the moment

Appears Houston still in on adding a starting 3B .  If they add Bergman.  Would Parades make sense for the brewers.

Wouldnt Parades just play 1B then?

Possibly.  But I’m guessing the Astros would want to add an another power hitting 1B.  To help make up for Tucker.

What about the idea of sending an OF to the Astros, I feel like the Astros still have a bunch of work to after trading Tucker, signing Walker, and probably losing Bregman. They don't have a great farm but do have some interesting talent. I doubt we could get someone like Framber Valdez but maybe we could jump in as a 3rd team. Here are some ideas

1) Sal/Perk and Boeve for Cam Smith     Smith was my favorite draft prospect last year, had a great debut, and doesn't have any ties to the org yet. Add in Peguero or Payamps if not enough

2) Valdez to Toronto, Sal/Perk, 2 toronto prospects to Astros and we get Orelvis Martinez

3) Peguero, Payamps, and Perk/Sal to Houston, Pressley to Dodgers, we get Sheehan/Frasso/Ryan etc (one of the injuried upside Dodgers starters) and Brice Matthews

4) Sal/Perk and Peguero for 3B Zack Denzenzo and UTL Shay Whitcomb

Perkins and Frelick are pretty redundant with Astros in house options like Jake Myers, Chas McCormick and old friend Mauricio Dubon as guys who derive most all their value from defense and base running.

Blake Perkins
85 wRC+ | +3.2 BsR | +19 DRS

Sal Frelick
88 wRC+ | +4.4 BsR | +21 DRS

Jake Myers
87 wRC+ | +3.8 BsR | +19 DRS

Mauricio Dubon
86 wRC+ | -3.2 BsR | +11 DRS

Chas McCormick
110 wRC+ | -3.5 BsR | +15 DRS

McCormick is the only one with any track record of hitting, but he cratered last year with a 66 wRC+ over 267 PAs. Dubon brings the added element of being a plus defensive 2B as well with +12 DRS there for his career.

Astros could use another OF for sure, but I'd think it would have to be Mitchell since he offers some offensive upside that Sal and Blake just don't quite have.

I feel like this applies to us as much as it does to Seattle. Castro is a guy that wasn’t really on my radar.

Also, Lux trade rumors are ramping up probably since LAD signed that infielder

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

As Nancy Reagan said "Just say no to Lux" - Probably.

Is Eugenio Suarez possibly available?  Don’t the DBacks need him at third?  If he’s legitimately out there, I hope we are in on it.  He’s got a big contract but is there a creative way we could work it?

The Dbacks are probably more interested in trading Montgomery than they are of trading Suarez.  If the Dbacks are serious about trading Suarez there are probably 2-3 teams that would be interested along with the Brewers.  Will have to pay a bit more to get Suarez than he is worth and I am not sure the Brewers would be willing or interested in doing that.

The Dbacks are having a hard time finding a buyer for Montgomery.  The Cubs said no and I have heard one other team has already told the Dbacks they were not interested.

Looking like the crew might have an issue filling that 3rdbase spot

It's totally possible that they have Ortiz locked in there and we just don't know it. They might be looking for no one or they might be looking for a SS/2B utility backup.

Turang as that is what he played the majority of the time as in the minors.

Thought it was said that Turang isnt moving off 2B? Dude just won Platinum glove at 2B.

I haven't seen anything like that.

I believe Ken Rosenthal mentioned it when Durbin was acquired.

Here's what Rosenthal said (https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5994597/2024/12/14/mariners-luis-castillo-trade-mlb-offseason-notes/):

Quote

Much can change before Opening Day, but the Brewers seem inclined to keep Platinum Glove winner Brice Turang at second base next season rather than move him to shortstop in place of Willy Adames, who departed for the Giants as a free agent.

Athleticism at second became even more valuable when the league banned defensive shifts prior to the 2023 season. A second baseman can range to his right for a grounder and get an out with a strong throw; a shortstop cannot always do that. Turang, 25, was first in defensive runs saved at second last season, eighth in outs above average.

If Turang stays at second, the Brewers can play Ortiz at short and potentially go with a combination of the newly acquired Caleb Durbin and Oliver Dunn at third. The 5-foot-6 Durbin might not have enough arm for third, but the Brewers believe his speed, scrappiness and contact skills will fit their style of play. He set a single-season Arizona Fall League record with 29 stolen bases his fall.

Seems to be speculation that keeping Turang at second would be a preference, but no inside info that they aren't moving him from there.

Ortiz at 3B, Turang at SS, Durbin at 2B..... ******** that is ZERO power.

But a ton of speed, which seems to be the direction they are trying to head as an offense. I would expect Chourio to make a jump in the power department, a healthy Yelich certainly brings power, and Hoskins and Contreras bring solid power to the lineup as well. Mitchell has untapped power potential as well. So it isn't like the perceived lineup is devoid of power.

Also, it is important to remember that its Jan. 7, and we still have over a month before pitchers and catchers even report to Arizona.

Yea good point, REALLY hope Mitchell stays healthy cuz if he does.... Wow, do we have a dude in CF.

Yelich, Mitchell, Chourio could be a dynamic OF! Could easily be top 3 trio in all of MLB.

The bigger issue to me is they would basically be counting on 500 ABs from Durbin, they can't really deal with an injury and that roster has an awful DH setup. So a 3B with a bat makes it all work because Durbin isn't needed full time and the new 3B can help fill some DH potentially.

If we're not going to make a splash in the infield, I would throw Donovan Solano's name in the ring for a nice depth piece. He played 26 games at 1B, 1 game at 2B, and 32 games at 3B last year, which would allow us to rotate through all the other infielders by mixing and matching positions. He made less than $1M last year and at 37 years old isn't likely to break the bank again this year.

So he's up there in age and isn't a defensive wiz by any measure, but his bat has been pretty darn consistently solid the past 6 years:

His projections make him a league average bat, but even if you take his worst numbers the past 6 seasons (.280/.344/.385, 99 wRC+, 0.5 WAR) they all match/exceed the projected .260/.324/.375, 99 wRC+, 0.3 WAR line, so I think there's a decent chance he puts up above average numbers again.

Again, not a world beater, but for likely less than $3M, he could be a possibility to help round out a young and inexperienced infield.

I just don't see any interest in Solano. Not much power for 3B, negative numbers with the glove and 37 years old. I think the Brewers have internal options who can give them equal or better play.
