We had him in aaa last year and the guy was a top top prospect (in fact was our headliner in lucroy trade that he nixed).

Has his defense become adequate and is he returning to the organization?  We are a year from a likely Contreras trade and id love to have him as the third or fourth catcher in the organization going into this season.

Mejia became a FA earlier this month so he's no longer in the organization. From what I heard, his defense has slipped quite a bit the last couple seasons.

We may be hoping to land a left-handed hitting catcher with MLB-caliber defense on a minor league contract or split contract, e.g.:

- Reese McGuire
- Tucker Barnhart
- Omar Narvaez (if we think we can fix him)

I don't think that's "likely."

I think it's as likely we keep him for 3 more years rather than vs trade him after this year.

I would be fine with him coming back, we need someone who could fill in for a few weeks if Contreras or Haase get hurt in the first couple months before Quero is ready.

I am sure there will be plenty of vets to pick up. I like Carlos Perez a AAA catcher from the A's. He hit 27 bombs last year. 31 in 2022, 31 in 2021. He seems like a good backup in AAA and DH. AAA will have Wes Clarke as an emergency. A Brett Sullivan reunion would work well for the same purposes.

Yeah, that'd work. Not really Wes Clarke, even as an emergency, but another catcher. If Haase or Contreras has a short-term injury...I suspect Quero will be fine coming up for a short period.

Might even be good for him. Take the pressure off. Coming up for a couple weeks knowing he'll spend the Lions' share of the year in AAA.

I do hope Quero can be the next man up that we extend early. I wouldn't do it yet obviously, but if he comes back with the same defense and can hit ~.270/.330/.450...I'd gladly give him 8/50 and a couple of options with more in incentives.

There is a need for a AAA catcher regardless right?

Quero is coming back from injury, and then there is who, Darrien Miller whose defense is not up to par. With several pitching prospects in the upper ranks, we may need/want a vet or a AAAA type of catcher regardless of if he can be a MLB call up.

I am guessing they sign someone else, but Ramón Rodriguez would probably be the backup in AAA as of now. He has past AAA experience.
