Tuesday 7/22: Eight-Game Set (3 in DSL); Sounds, Shuckers and Mudcats Begin Home Series

Posted

T-Rats finally break through, Herbert singles, Alastre doubles, and a ground out scores one runner, and Diaz doubles home the other runner, for a 2-0 lead. Sam Garcia kept the bats quiet through 5 innings.

Cornielle does have a fine but inefficient outing. 4 IP, 1 hit, 1 walk and 7 K. But lifted at 68 pitches with an eye toward his Sunday start no doubt. Mendoza in and already given up a walk and a hit and now a HBP to load the bases. Ok. Settle down Shuckers let’s minimize the damage and keep going.  Right now a 4-0 game, but Rocket City on the verge of breaking through…

T-Rays get a run back and reclaim the lead 3-2 yhoswar Garcia singles in a run.

Shuckers still lead 4-0. Lara with a picked off (catcher to 3rd) and now a caught stealing. Adventurous day on the base paths.

Obviously only four games, but cool to see Jesus come back strong (6 for 13 with two doubles & three walks) after his week long break around the Futures Game.

"We're here tonight to see the debut opener for the Panama City T-Rays..."

Just got back from dinner. Thanks for keeping the boat afloat @biedergb. Looking forward to looking over the game logs and checking in on some replay innings.

I see I walk into Figeuroa with the bases juiced, bottom of 9, one out and the T-Rats clinging to a 3-2 lead.

I see I walk into Middendorf with the bases juiced, one out, Shuckers clinging to a 4-1 lead.

2025 in a nutshell for those two.

Yup I saw Middendorf get the first guy out. Then the rails came off.

Figueroa is trying a new magic escape act.  Oh boy one more out to go.

Unbelievable. Figueroa's season in a nutshell. Works back to a 3-2 count. Gets the weak pop out to Areinamo. Two down. Walks the next batter on four pitches. That's four walks this inning. Tie game. Sigh. T-Rats relief corps going to T-Rats relief corps.

And it’s literally a walk off for Quad Cities 4-3. TRats(or maybe they should rebrand to the Trays lol) are finding ways to lose.

Yup. Simply a classic 2025 Figueroa and T-Rats bullpen performance. He walks five in the inning including the tying and losing run. He was a head 0-1. 1-2. Then proceeded to throw three straight balls after two or three fouled off pitches. A sneaky tip of the cap to the DSL Brewers pitching staff. None of the pitches were close. Very glad I did not watch that whole game. As I've said for the past several weeks: this Timber Rattlers team is a very hard watch. They know how to find ways to lose.

RHP Ethan Dorchies. 4.0 IP, 1 BB, 3 K, 0 H, 0 R. Heck of a Start. He reverses course as RHP Jayden Dubanewicz piggy backs. After a line out, Jose Anderson misplays a fly ball in RF. The batter advances to 2B. And the 'No No' immediately ends with a single. Runners on the corners. One down. Muddies cling to a 1-0 lead. Eeeek.

Ethan has had a solid start to his minor league career.  Is there a scout on him?

Silver Lining for the Timber Rattlers - a team very much only worth looking at individual performances at this juncture of the second half:

(1) Oh HEY! Jadher Areinamo again. Who knew?!? 3-for-5 yet again in lead-off. 22nd double of his season. Sadly, he was followed by Burke (and his 0-for-4, 1 BB, 3 K night) and Garcia (0-for-4, 1 BB, 1 K).

(2) LHP Sam Garcia bounces back in a massive way going 5.0 IP of 3 H, 1 BB, 6 K, 0 R work. Fantastic

(3) DH Hedbert Perez goes 1-for-2, 2 R, 3 BB. Fine work.

(4) RF Luiyin Alastre goes 3-for-4, 1 R, 1 2B

AND the T-Rats as a team offense managed a paltry 2-for-18 with RISP. Despite some laudable individual performances they still struggle to be a 'Team' in the second half.

Absolutely. We've written about him quite a bit and Baseball America actually featured him as their top Complex Pitcher to watch earlier in the summer. I'd just go read Spencer's write up from earlier this summer

Biloxi got a run back. Will try to close it out up 5-2. They are playing like a “team” - even with key players out they still find ways to win. Although I will nitpick and say it’s been a little while since Cooper Pratt really stood out offensively.  Otherwise no Wilken, Adams, or Hardin and the team still plays well enough to win or keep it close. Hoping some of those players get healthy and can return and help Biloxi in the 2nd half and the playoffs.

It's interesting to see LHP Mark Manfredi having to work around his first mini 'slump' of his season in quite some time. He'd been down right lethal for months. He's had two hiccup outings in a row though tonight he avoided any major damage - 1.0 IP 3 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 ER. He's earned our trust with a generally fantastic season. BUT, he has a history of running off the rails when these types of outings happen. Monitoring, say, his next 3-to-6 outings will be quite interesting.

And, staying in the Shuckers bullpen RHP Abdiel Mendoza is suddenly stringing together solid outing after solid outing out of the Shuckers pen. 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 HB, 3 K, 0 R tonight. ERA suddenly down to 4.61 tells you he has been doing some work of late. As a matter of fact, he certainly has. Month of June: 11 2/3 IP, 2.31 ERA, 0.214 BAA, 0.94 WHIP. July so far? 7 1/3 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0.167 BAA, 0.55 WHIP. His macro numbers are still quite shaky - his season long 0.302 BAA and 1.54 WHIP tell enough of that story. BUT, his transition to a strict bullpen role has done wonders for his impact within the greater Shuckers pitching staff.

Jeepers 18 years old .  With that size and velocity already .  Sounds a touch similar to Woodruff.  Sounds like a 10th rd steal.

Last year's high school class of pitchers has been pretty dang phenomenal. All of Dubanewicz, Dorchies, and Tobias impress in their own ways. Dorchies likely has the most impressive current set of tools. And, of course, this doesn't even get into the much awaited (hopeful) debut of LHP Joey Broughton. And, RHP Tyler Renz is acquitting himself really well in the ACL this season too. Just a really fun class of high school pitchers. Their overall ability to challenge and throw strikes is truly something.

Complex game is pretty much summed up as a “walk-fest”.

I will follow up in the AM.

I’m imagining swirling winds. Combined 29 hits, 4 triples, 4 errors. Wind was 6mph blowing to right field per box score.

I’m still happy the guys got to have a 5-homer game (and victory) on Monday with 18mph winds out to left field. That’s something I figure they’ll remember for a long time.

Just thought I would put this in here if it's one of our people. Saw a guy pull in to Five County with Washington car tags and was dressed all out in Brewers stuff. Also saw a few TRats Parking Passes hanging in the lot last night. If any of those were you guys, I'm curious!
