And if I see the whole siegler at bats are better than his outcomes crap anymore.

I've watched him since he's been here, and IMO they are. That doesn't mean he's been successful (he mostly hasn't) or that they couldn't have done better than him at the deadline (we suspect so but unless we're sitting in the war room on 8/1 we don't know enough to be certain).

Maybe Murf's gut was low on pancakes.

He played the numbers.  Siegler's OBP is .319. Durbin's is .326. Factor in righty/lefty and recent trends, and you have your decision. However, I don't discount gut decisions. A manager spends almost everyday with players. He knows them and where they are mentally.

Mona is fine when you look around at utility guys on other rosters. But I'd really love to have a serious sit down with someone in the FO about Kiner-Falefa & if they inquired about him. He's in his last year, Pittsburgh is going nowhere, and it isn't like we were outbid for him because he's still with the Pirates. And it makes little sense to think they'd want to keep him for the last two months. Plus he can play 3B & SS. Unless he's some kind of clubhouse pariah I don't get it. At this point in his career he isn't a world-beater but was the closest thing to a Hairston JR or Ray Durham-type pickup.

These FO guys don't miss a trick; they do this for a living. Had to be a reason. I'd just like to know what it was.

I'm sure Kiner-Falefa would have cost them a lot more is the only reason.

And yet it if we were 5 games behind, nobody would be acting like it's a sure thing we'd win the division.

After looking at the remaining schedules, that's correct.

As I see it, this loss is totally on Megill. I hope he rights the ship very quickly. Two blown saves in one series is not good.

I agree. If you just have a fastball against professional hitters, even if that fastball is 100 mph, you're a one-legged man in a butt kicking contest.

Correction: Unless your name is Nolan Ryan.

I hope OBP isn’t the only number he considers. Durbin has some power to tie or win the game. Seigler doesn’t.

Yes, several numbers, as posted above, and also including how Durbin hits 24 points lower against righties. Durbin would have to hit a triple or homer to tie/win the game, unless Sal was on the move, then a double might do it. I'm only guessing, but maybe Murph just wanted someone not to make an out so Wild Bill could come to the plate. Siegler has managed to get walks, and he actually probably should have in this AB, if the ump had glasses.

How much are they up in the wildcard

13 over the Reds who are currently in the 7th spot.

14 if you consider that the Brewers have already clinched the tiebreaker over them at 7-3.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

A first round bye sure would be sweet.

Especially as worn out our bullpen seems to be.

Yeah, it hurts to give up half of what looked like a nice lead in 6 days.

Now the Phillies and Cubs are right in that side view mirror where objects are closer than they appear. Their high priced players, boosted by the.depth they added at the trade deadline, are prepared to take over.

This team looks like it just played its 11th game in 10 days...and it's only the middle of this brutal stretch of their schedule.

Megill has to pitch better - should have been a W today.

The next 10 games are against teams that are better, and have much better offenses, than the Giants.

The pitching is really going to be stressed, especially if the offense continues to struggle.

I dunno. From what I see Jansen makes more than IKF this year & they acquired him. And you would think Pittsburgh would eat some of the salary already factored into their books in exchange for a prospect or two, esp since he's going to be a FA. It's just very strange to me.

Yep. This is a gray-area decision, and I already said I'd have let Durbin hit. Both have a propensity to reach w/o the aid of a hit, maybe Durbin a little less so recently.

Seigler took a couple very close ones on the final two pitches. Could've gotten both calls but often umpires seem to split the difference on back-to-back pitches like that. Obviously would've liked to see Contreras come to the plate.

Chourio went 1 for 4 for Nashville tonight and then was removed from the game.

Does anyone know if he was injured or just taken out because he had had enough for the day or is packing to come to Milwaukee?

The first pitch looked high to me.  The last strike was borderline. Seigler can't take them that close with two strikes, but that's easy to say from the easy chair.

I am enjoying all the talk about how we are doomed because of the schedule yet we just lost to two sub .500 teams. The strength of schedule only seems to matter when it benefits the Cubs. It's assumed that they will just beat anyone with a record worse than theirs.
