The Red Sox were on the verge of selling and... now they're firmly in the race because the AL is terrible.

Well, also they're in the race because they won 15 in a row. Suffice to say if the Tigers win 15 in a row, they will be in a very good spot.

unlike the time we rented CC our owner should break the piggy bank and immediately sign him to a two-year extension. If we can do that (I know it borders on being a pipe dream), then two top 100 prospects and one or two position players would, IMO, not be too high a price to pay.

The problem is there is 0 chance Skubal does that when someone is going to give him 350-400 million.

You are probably right. Having said that, some teams have learned that investing that much money can hamstring an organization. The Brewers are one team that has been taught that lesson.

oing for Skubal... I don't think so. You have so many teams that can offer more for him and the Brewers are kinda a victim of their own success at this point. Our farm is so deep, do you want to give up say Adamczewski and Bishop Letson?

I don’t understand how “so many teams can offer more for him?” Can you explain that? Who has more to trade than Milwaukee?

Well, I'm not even considering Dubaniwiecz.

I'd have a pretty firm standard as a GM. I'm not trading away projectable young arms who have little value... or offensive players for that matter up the middle... I strongly disliked the Jorge Quintana inclusion in that trade last year). He was too young, the return already skewed in SD's favor(IMO).

It's not because I think Quintana or Dubaniwiecz is going to be a star,.. but I think he's got plenty of time to become one and I'd much rather give away a guy like O'Rae and Dorchies.. which should be enough for Wart.

Again, this is the problem with the system. That's not an unreasonable ask for 25+ teams in the league.

The Milwaukee Brewers, that may be Braylon Payne. That may be a 19-year-old in HiA with 70 grade speed, he's a 6'2 185LB Left handed hitter with a nice swing, draws walks.

Doesn't hit for much power, but he's projectable... and then he started hitting for power this year and he's hitting ~.290/.390/575 with an OPS of ~965 and 18 HRs from a slap hitting 19 year old in HiA.

It's kinda insane.

It'd have to be a Matthew Wood+ type of guy. Maybe Wilken, they may hope he can turn it around(or just stay healthy).

I suspect you're pretty close in your assessment of where Payne fits right now on the Brewers' prospect list. And no, he shouldn't go for a rental like Ward.

I'm sure Wilkin is available. And Mike Boeve has played RF in recent games after never having played there before in his pro career; something might be up there. I'd try to sell someone on Darrien Miller before giving up Wood but that might not fly. I know it wouldn't if I was on the other side.

Well, it's what I went to discuss in the post when I mentioned Braylon Payne and where he ranked in the system and what prospects I expect teams to want from the Brewers.

On Payne, If you were comping him in the way that people do comping him to a former star, it's Ken Griffey Jr(understanding that the Comps are ALWAYS taking a player who fits the general type of player and skills and the prospect is almost invariably going to fall WELL short of that player).

But he's a left handed power bat who was drafted as a 70 runner and a slap hitter. He's 6'2, 185 which should become 205-215 and he's got a nice smooth swing.

I'm saying it'll be easier if you're just going and picking prospects from MLB Pipeline and saying "well, it should take 2 top 13 prospects to get Skubal, a top 5 and someone in the top 15 range.

NOT that other teams have more talent, I just think it's easier to facilitate a trade.

NOW you factor in the LAD. Lets say they trade River Ryan. I'm not considering that as a Brewer fan. To me that's... a more talented but less refined Logan Henderson or maybe a Sproat. And I don't care about his age all that much, I look at a prospect and consider what they'll do for the 6-7 years they're under team control, so him being 27 doesn't knock him down for me, the Dodgers are stacked with talent.

But the Dodgers... if they trade him and he's a hit, so what? They can just... re-sign Skubal. They use their farm system to hand pick a few guys who they love who can make it through the grind, Pages, Rushing, Will Smith, Muncy... and then the rest of their system is to supplement the MLB team.

That's not at all how we can afford to operate.

This is a system that Baseball America said is the best system they've scouted in 15-years.

You have fan bases who expect Luis Pena(so the Brewers don't have to give up their top prospect) or they expect Adamczewski, Payne and Letson. There's no shot. Maybe Mason Miller I'd still remove Payne.

So I'm saying it's probably going to be easier for some other teams to facilitate a trade.

It seems as if you are rating/valuing the Brewer prospects on a different scale than prospects from other teams. I don't think front offices do that. I imagine they are not struggling to comp or value Braylon Payne. The teams may not agree on what that value is, but determining a player's value is what has happened in every single trade in MLB history.

Then, if you are essentially saying that the Dodgers are the "so many teams" that can offer more, no argument from me. Your use of the qualifier "so many" may be what is throwing me off here.

Doesn't matter. I don't expect the Brewers to end up with Skubal. But it will be because the Tigers want more than the Brewers want to give (Or the $10 mil in salary). Not that other teams have more to give.
