The win Tuesday vs the Mets - could this be a turning point?

Posted

Don't want to jump the gun, but I really believe the entire pitching staff needed this, nearly everyone contributed with scoreless innings, hopefully re-spreading confidence all over the bullpen... and that last at bat by Fielder really has me hoping he's seeing the ball better than he has in a month.

What are your thoughts?

I want to agree but the old RISP impotence raised its ugly head again (how's that for a mixed metaphor)

Fantastic game for the pen's confidence though, and I really hope the Crew can get some mo from this...Glavine was a monster.

I think the "don't want to jump the gun" could have been in blue. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Anyways, we'll see, it would be excellent if whoever starts could go 8 tomorrow, atleast 7. I would hate to see us have problems tomorrow with our pitching after mowing through our 'pen tonight, which was the right thing to do and I applaud Ned for pulling Wise mid-AB, that was the right move. I have a feeling before this last stretch of games Ned would have had him finish that hitter.

See Ned does get credit around here.

My thoughts...I love this team and will enjoy the next two months more than anything. The Brewers are in first place and its August! Packer training camp started on Friday and I really don't care because the Brewers take up all my time.

I'm confused, can we talk about this game or not? Is this thread about to get locked?

This win has to give the team bucketloads of confidence. Yes, we struggled with RISP, timely hitting, and fundamental hitting. Our pitching kept us in it, Spurling did a great job, as did Shouse, Villanueva, Turnbow, and Cordero.

If nothing else, this should help to restore the bullpen's confidence.

brewerfan is a weird site.

But yea, I hope this can be a turning point. We'll see. Wonder if Bush is starting tomorrow?

It could be, but it just as easily might not be. The win against Detroit the day after the no-hitter was claimed by many to be a turning point.

"the win against Detroit the day after the no-hitter was claimed by many to be a turning point"

and it was... there can be more than one turning point in a season

this just felt abnormally good tonight.

Anybody notice how Milledge horribly misplayed both those balls? He broke back at first, then had to sprint in to make the diving play both times. A good CF makes those catches look easy.

The award for "I would've killed Yost if this pitcher switch didn't work out tonight" goes to the switch of Shouse and Spurling. Shouse stepped in to a 2-0 count and got a double play against a right handed hitter. Then comes Easley, another righty. Can you imagine how we would all feel if Spurling came in a gave up a hit to score David Wright? We would've all been calling for his head. I was shocked he called on Spurling as Shouse has been terrific lately.

That foul ball by Prince was easily over 500'. WOW.

RISP, yet again the Achilles' heel. That has got to get better, and soon. I'm preaching to the choir here.

A good outing by both starters. Kudos to Suppan for keeping the Beltran-less lineup in check. The standing O after Glavine left was very classy. We've got good fans here.

Huge win, and much needed. Jenks is 5-7 in his last 2 games. He needs to get going again.

Vargas tomorrow I'm assuming. How about 8 more innings!

Give Yost his props, he got relievers up in a hurry, and while I thought he made the switch 2 pitches too late, it still worked out.

How much better can the team get w/RISP?

Overall:

.263&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp .330&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp .446

w/RISP:

.259&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp .346&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp .433&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp

Yep, imagine that. They hit basically the same w/RISP as overall.

I agree with kgbaseball. I hated the Spurling for Shouse move. Obviously, it worked out, but Shouse has been great lately. I saw no reason to pull him there.

I also really disliked not having Graffy sac bunt when Miller got a hit late in regulation (7th or 8th?). He promptly GIDP (although he did hit it hard, which, even though I was watching on a gametracker, was something he seemed to do all night). Obviously, our sac bunt strategy kept flopping every inning, but I'm not sure why Yost didn't try it with Graffy, a runner on 1st, and no outs.

That all said, this could be a very uplifting win for the Brewers. Let's just hope the bullpen can hold up!

If Bill Hall's 8th inning double would've stayed in the park, Prince would've easily scored, since he was almost to third when the ball hopped over. Could've been 3-2. Moot point now, but I'm feeling good about tonight.

Hopefully this is the start of a hot streak for the Brewers. Jenkins had the big hit, but much of the credit has to go the bullpen. They got out of some major jams.

I'm not a big Spurling fan, but I've got to give him some props (along with Yost). I was very confused when he came in for Shouse, but that move definitely worked. I think he's earned a roster spot for the rest of the year.
