7/11/2004 - Brewers (Santos) vs. Reds (Acevedo)

First you need to get to extra innings and you only have 6 outs left. Giving one up because you may tie in the five left is stupid. And this isn't just this year, Jenkin's hasn't hit LH pitching ever.

No manager in baseball would PH for Jenkins there.... not one.

You know Bill, that raises the question I've always wondered about using your "closer" when a rally occurs after the 6th inning. I just do not get why that isn't ok, either.

I don't care what the stats say about Kinney's pen work, I wouldn't have brought him in there.

Why don't you care what the stats say? I would at least want to know how Kinney has *actually* performed in close and late situations before deciding that he can't handle that level of pressure... wouldn't you? Kinney *has* been an above-average (and not just by a little, by a good bit) relief pitcher. If something pointed to him being unable to handle that situation, I haven't seen the numbers.

And before you get all anecdotal on me, remember the game against the Mets (05/0http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/glasses.gif when he came on with the bases loaded and one out? He gave up a single and walk, but then struck-out Mike Cameron and Ty Wigginton to end the inning. So yes, he allowed two inherited runners to score. But he still turned in a pretty "clutch" performance.

Don't hate the numbers, RoCo! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

EDIT: About Wise, he just hasn't been that successful out of the pen. This is the first time in his career that he's been a reliever, so that's understandable... while he's looked good in his starts (sans the one in Pittsburgh) and in most of his relief outings, he has also struggled on a number of occasions. The numbers don't lie... Kinney has been better out of the bullpen than Wise.

I admit, I only follow the Brewers. That given, I can't imagine that anyone has meant more to their team this year than Overbay to the Brewers. Besides Bonds.

If Overbay had hit like had been expected--I was just browsing through the preseason predictions posts--this team would be down in Pittsburgh territory right now.

At least I haven't heard Uecker call him by the wrong name for a couple of weeks.

Who knows what will happen after the All-Star Break. But should this crazy season continue as it's started, the Brewers have a solid candidate for MVP.

Allright Kolb...let's get through this without a sweat mmkay. It's gonna be tough with the bottom of the lineup coming up for the Crew. Especially since Hall has already been spent pinch-hitting earlier. It sure would have been nice having him in Helms place all game.

Is it too much to ask for Helms to make contact and have the ball find grass in the outfield somewhere? It would be nice to get the leadoff man aboard to start the 9th.

C'mon Bill, you know I'm as much a stats guy as all but a few on this site!

That being said, Kinney has an E.R.A. of almost 6 for the season, right?

Yeah, he's been better in relief, in 25 some innings. I'm not denying that, but overall, he's sucked this year, even after a good stretch of pitching well in relief.

And yes, he was ok in the Mets game. He only allowed TWO inherited runners to score.

Yeah, LH hitters are never hit for against LH relievers.

It happens all the time.

Not when that LH hitter is a former All-Star and the second best hitter on the team, but you left that part out.

PHing for Jenkins there is just stupid, point blank.

So who is still available on the bench? Moeller, Grieve, and Erickson, right? It sure is nice to have that extra position player... can't say enough about that move, 'specially since not a lot of other teams have done the same thing.

That's gotta be an error on Po'... no way that's a double.

EDIT: And RoCo, I'm just giving you a hard time. Reasonable folks can disagree.

Now we're gonna need Kolb to work out of it. Still no extra base hits vs. Kolb thanks to Pods error. Let's get positive fellas and steer this thread towards a Brewer win.

Well that was certainly unexpected. *** just happened?

And Wily Mo needs to get his cocky behind thrown at. If he struts around the bases like that one more time, I might drive to Miller Park and attack him myself. He'd rip me limb from limb, but its about the principle http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif .

Ouch...the bullpen is failing us today. Kolb gives up runs, extra base hits in the form of home runs, and all of the sudden looks human. I's a damn shame we couldn't handle this Red's lineup today.

It's gonna take an effort as of yet not seen from the bottom of the lineup to pull this one out today.

I know Bill.

All I'm getting at is that even as a "stat" guy, I recognize that Kinney sucks!

Much like some don't feel comfortable with Viz in the game (despite the 2.88 ERA and 1.10 WHIP), who I ardently defend, I don't feel comfortable with Kinney in a close game, and I don't feel comfortable bringing him in with men on base.

For reference.

OPS against Kinney with no runner on, .723

OPS against Kinney with runners on .957.

That would bear out my feeling, at least a little bit.
