If Yost were to be fired after the season, whom would you choose as a replacement?

Honestly, if our entire rotation was made up of Suppans, I'd totally be down with Dusty Baker. With Yo, Parra, Villanueva and Bush, however, I'd like to stay away from someone guaranteed to leave them out for 150 pitches a game.

• Rene Lachemann: previously managed Mariners
• George Bamberger (second coming): previously managed Brewers and Mets
  

Also, the Brewers offered a very large contract to Don Baylor, who took the same money to manage the Cubs instead.

I would go with Bobby Valentine. I remember he was featured in an article in Sports Illustrated a few months ago and mentioned that he would consider managing back in the states but hasn't been contacted by anyone. Yost's decision today to leave Linebrink in for the 8th and had him hit in a one run game in the bottom of the seventh with virtually everyone available in an 8-man bullpen is just plain foolish. It's a one run game! Gross doubles two batters later and you might have had a base runner on, instead you hit a relief pitcher who hasn't hit all year long. Yost has been a gritty battler long enough, its time to make a change before next year. Bring Bobby V back to the states. Mark A, do whatever it takes.

Bobby Valentine is the answer for this team. I will keep saying his name hoping that Doug Melvin reads this and does the right thing. As 2007 is slipping away I am hoping that 2008 doesnt get ruined before it starts by keeping clueless Ned around.

Davey Johnson might be ok, Carlos Tosca(why would you suggest him), Frank Robinson handles a bullpen about as well as Yost does, Cito Gaston has been out of the game way too long, Kremblas might be ok. How can you possibly put together a list of replacements for Yost without including Bobby Valentine. Valentine is a great leader and he is also very solid strategically. There is no better choice out there to replace Yost.

- Davey Johnson, Frank Robinson and Carlos Tosca are Earl Weaver disciples. The idea that Robinson is a bad bullpen manager is certainly debatable.

- Gaston was the runner up for the White Sox job before Guillen got it, and Leyland had a 7 year break between managing gigs, so it's not unfathomable.

Bobby Valentine = Whartongate. We don't need that drama in our clubhouse.

I'd love to see LaRussa as the manager but I doubt it would ever happen. His teams always seem to win 5-10 more games than their talent suggests.

Not sure LaRussa and another Beer town is a good mix though!

If I were to fire Ned Yost at the end of the season, one person I would interview is Craig Counsell.

 

Among the other names I would look into are Tony Gwynn Sr., Cal Ripkin Jr, Art Howe, Bobby Valentine,

 

But my 2 stone cold locks would be #2 - Joe Morgan.

 

#1 - Ricky Henderson - Who I consider the smartest baseball player of all time. I still think he could steal 30 bases as a pinch runner on his baseball smarts alone.

Im sorry but I say no more inexperienced managers. That would eliminate Gwynn, Ripken, Morgan and Henderson. Watching Morgan on Sunday night baseball just shows that he is a complete moron. Henderson is one of the most selfish people you will ever see so managing is definitely not for him. After all he still thinks he is better thanh most people playing today. Art Howe has the personailty of a stone so I wouldnt consider him. Bobby Valentine is perfect. Valentine is fiery and knows how to get the most out of his players. He is also a great in game manager which is something that we are in desperate need of. Valnetine is everything that this team needs. Too bad we can get him till after the season ends.

You'll have to realize that Gwynn, Ripken, Henderson, Morgan, and Howe were meant to be sarcastic (at least I'm assuming that's the case).

Valentine's a drama queen. He's condescending and arrogant. Players tuned him out by the end of his tenure because he threw them under the bus all the time to the media. He's been fired for fueds with more than one front office. If you can't work well with the GM and the owner, you have no place managing a baseball team.

 

And as far as in-game management, he's not really any better than Ned Yost. His lineup cards made Ned's look downright stable, and has been noted for obvious blunders like forgetting to make double switches.

Id love Art Howe. He worked under Valentine for a few years, has winning (and losing) experience in Oakland and has managed young stars like Biggio and Bagwell.

 

Valentine I was serious about again. Ned Yost seems more concerned about his players buying him a beer on the road instead of winning games. Valentine is the Anti ned. With over 1000 wins, I dont think you can question him too much.

 

Joe Girardi would obviously be a sweet free agent addition but he will likely be going to the Yanks.

 

Jimmy Williams woudl intrest me. I think he is a bench coach in Philly.

 

Ricky Henderson in my mind would make a great manager. Ozzie Guillen makes a great manager and he has that same brash confidence/personality. I think someone will give him a chance and he will run with it. Anyone who loves the game so much should get a chance. He has moved up the ladder from hitting instructor to 1st base coach.

Girardi has been blamed for some mismanagement with Florida's young arms, i.e. Anibal Sanchez. For that reason alone, I would probably be hesistant to have him come here and work with Yo, Parra, etc.
