Pirates dont necessarily have to go out and spend a ton of money, but they do have to stop being morons when drafting and stop doing god awful trades like Matt Morris or Aramis Ramirez

That is true, and they do need to do a better job of protecting their rule V players. They just got killed a few years ago. Stupid trades, bad draft picks and you are where they are (see Milwaukee brewers during the bando and taylor regimes).

Well, it's not necessarily his fault, but Tracy is what some would call an ass. Over the past 2 seasons he consistently sabotaged the team and put all the balme on his players when his stupid schemes didn't work. He may (or may not) be an ok manager for a winning team, but he is a train-wreck managing a bad one. The Pirates were smart to get him out of there. Of course, as a Brewer fan, I wish they would have kept him.

I think Tracy was "just another guy". They could either improve the team or make the team worse by firing him... But I suppose when you're at rock bottom, you gotta do something.

While I will admit that the great Kevin McClatchy gave him virtually nothing to work with, when the Pirates went into Wrigley for that 4-game sweep in late September, I saw a team more open to surrender than Mussolini's navy, and that's on him.

 

Say what you will about Ned (and believe me, the foam is still at the corners of my mouth from last night's post), but at least the Brewers were fired up enough to severely damage San Diego's playoff hopes after our hope was gone.

 

I know 3 Pirate fans, and I've taken them to task for that series, when they laid down like Yoko and John in a Montreal hotel room. Could they summon up the chutzpah to win even one damned game in Chicago? No way in hell. After that series, Tracy was toast.

here's a pretty good post-mortem on Tracy's firing. It basically says that he took all the credit when things were going well and placed all the blame on his player's when things were going poorly. In other words, pretty much the exact opposite of many managers strategy.

Yeah... I remember being baffled when Tracy threw his players under the bus. He pretty much had this coming.
