Favorite Scary Movie

It's that time of year...In the spirit of October 31...I'm wondering about everyone's favorite horror/scary movie...

I gotta go with either "Halloween" or "The Shining." Carpenter and Kubrick know how to create a suspenseful atmosphere, no doubt.

I don't do horror films, for the same reason I don't do scary rides at the fair, being scared to me is not entertaining.

However, I do enjoy a good thriller, and one of my favorites that most do not know about is Breakdown, with Kurt Russell, made in the late 90's.

Hostel....just kidding. I would have to go with House on Haunted Hill. My wife (girlfriend at the time) and I went to see this at the Rivoli in La Crosse, which is kind of spooky anyway. Wow, freaked us out for the whole night.

Motel Hell is awesome! Wow, I have to see that again because it brings back my youthiness. The first SAW was freaky and Psycho was always great. TCM was a great one too.

I'm a big fan of Alien.

Others that spring to mind, The Haunting (1960s version), Nosferatu, Halloween, Psycho, Cat People (original) most classic Universal films, and a good chunk of Hammer's output.

Edit: Romero's Night of the Living Dead springs to mind as well.

2 other older ones I thought of that are very creepy...

Rosemary's Baby and The Changeling.

I have also gotten into a lot of the Japanese horror, which has produced some crappy American ripoffs --- but the Japanese originals can be very good.

Thank you for bringing up Motel Hell, for about 2 years I have had a tiny clip of a movie in my head and couldn't come up with the name. I was begining to doubt it's existence.

Gotta totally agree with Robert here.

On a side note, I really don't care for modern horror films much at all. It doesn't seem like they try to be so much "scary" as they try to just shock you with as much blood, gristle, and gore that they can. It seems like a lot of horror movies nowadays are of the "separate the hot 20-something actors and actresses, and then dispatch them as gruesomely as possible" theme, and that just doesn't appeal to me.

Poltergeist was a great one, at least back in the day. The Shining was awesome (the best Stephen King adaptation, IMO), and I always enjoy the original Night of the Living Dead. Still though, I think my favorite horror has to be Alien. I think you see the creature for all of 3 minutes on screen, and sometimes it's what you can't see that scares you.
