Winter is back

Will this mess get cleaned up in time for morning commute tomorrow? Two days of being stuck inside after already being inside most of the winter might push me over the edge of cabin fever. Spring training is going to give off such a warmth this year.

Most Rock County locations are reporting in to the NWS now that the snow is passed, and most are reporting between 14-18", with Orfordville reporting 19.5 inches. Drifts of 2-3 feet are common, with some locations drifting over 5 feet. Simply insane.

EDIT: My bad, Orfordville reported 22 inches. Brodhead reported 19.5.

I can't speak for your location, but WCLO (Rock county) is reporting most everything gov't wise is either closed tomorrow or delayed at least 2 hours.

No idea without looking it up as to what happened on I-90 in Madison, but Milwaukee local news said that it was 500 cars backed up and at a stand still for hours. The National Guard has been dispatched to give people water and MRE's to those stranded. The National Guard has high ground clearance vehicles they could get in there to help out. I heard two helicopters were dispatched to help out as well. Maybe to drop food stuffs MRE's)?

1,000 people stranded on the interstate by Edgerton and Stoughton. I just went past there a while ago on 51 and they turned me around. Had to take the back roads home and Rock County hasn't plowed..... nearly unpassable roads. Snowmobiles were everywhere to help the stranded and the National Guard and Blackhawk helicopters have been mobilized.

I'm really tired of this. This week has been crappy for me...suddenly got sick Monday night (like, physically ill), and had the same stuff through last night. Today I'm just feeling wiped out and a bit feverish yet. That, coupled with all the snow (still had to get out and use the snowblower this morning so the wife could get to work) makes me really wishing for spring soon.

No idea how much snow we totaled out here. Coupled with the snow that was already on the ground, the drifting makes it impossible to make any kind of accurate estimate as to how many inches we received.

I never saw a final total for Lake Mills (saw 14 inches on tv late afternoon), but after taking a snow day me and my wife went outside at 5 p.m. to shovel for a second time. The snow in our driveway was above our knees. We shoveled for 30 minutes and didn't even make it halfway down our driveway (we don't have a long driveway). Thankfully, our neighbor came out with his snowblower to save the day. He said "Go inside and have a beer." I did. God bless him.

Just finished plowing the driveway... We've done it three times since this morning. The snow plow got jammed on me this last time.

Stevo, just spray your blades and chute with WD-40 or Pam before using. It won't get jammed that way.

Apparently, a few semis couldn't make it up a slick hill, thus causing traffic to back up. I just don't know why they didn't try to get some of the stuck vehicles off the road by turning them around to go back south in some way. It would have made a lot more sense I guess.

Probably due to the visibility issues. Turn a bunch of traffic backwards, even with cones and cop cars could lead to pretty horrible head on collisions.

At least the sun's out today. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

At the beginning of the week, the city had put temporary No Parking Thursday signs all along our block. Our City Council alder said it was to clear the block of snow (i.e. widen the street) for public safety. Since this is a low traffic street, we figured they would postpone the work after yesterday's heavy snow. But they didn't - they were out bright and early, creating a large mountain of snow in the middle of the street, then toting it away in dump trucks. They even let us push out (and then took away) the snow left in our driveway after last night's plowing, which means we didn't have to find a place for it on our property this time.

So despite the huge snowfall yesterday, our immediate area is in possibly the best shape it's been since November 30. Experiences like this reinforce my belief that we get what we pay for in city services.

Well done, City of Madison DPW!

That 120 degrees pic has got to be the funniest pic I've seen of a winter scene! Nice pics brewerjamie! Thanks everyone for sharing.

Bjamie - the little girl's adorable, and the pic of the snowflakes reflecting is sweet.

Owbc - what was that gigantic pile by the Johnson St. parking garage from? Just drifting? I can't imagine they plowed up to that spot.

TLB, that's the snow that was plowed from the top level of the ramp. They push it to a corner and it goes down kind of a chute. Heck, given how horizontal the snowfall was on Wednesday, it may have been necessary to plow the middle levels of the ramp as well.

That is a terrific picture, though, as are the others. The winter of 2007-2008 will be well documented.

I see... thanks. This has been and continues to be a fantastic thread. Heck, we even have our own BF.net weatherman (owbc)!

I'm glad someone noticed the thermometer. I was shoveling off the upstairs porch and accidentally hit the thermometer with the shovel and it broke. I thought I'd just leave it for the bird picture. Bird is a red Breasted Nuthatch.

I didn't get a chance to finish my drive-way clean up yesterday so I did it today and got some unexpected assistance from a very nice DPW worker who plowing the handicap ramps. He removed the snow at the bottom of my drive for me in about 30 seconds. That was awesome!
