He's been dissapointing, but where you're picked shouldn't really matter. He was the consensus #2 pick, and has outperformed the #1 by a lot.

True that. They came in first in Batting average, 3rd in OBP and 5th in runs. To limit them to 2 runs in 7 innings, with only one (intentional) walk is pretty great.

Well, here we are 54 games in, exactly 1/3 thru the season. Looking at how our team has performed and all the players that aren't contributing due to injury, I feel ok about being 2 games under .500. If through the next 54 we regress upwards toward what should be our true talent level with some luck and we go, say, 30-24, I would not be surprised if we find ourselves right back in the thick of the race.

Neither Tony Gwyn Junior nor Tony Pena Junior (160/.181/.200.) are currently on the Brewers But I wouldn't rule out a trade for TPJ....

Which, if this wasn't the silver lining thread, I would have to point out this would include an intrasquad game.

 

So, I hope opponents don't get underestimated because of their record (like scrub pitchers with losing records and high ERAs)

Because even though Dempster was not a great RP, he was much better than Seth... and Dempster had been at least moderately successful as a SP earlier in his career. Like I said, I hope I'm wrong.

a lot of people discredit Dempster as a starter because they have completely forgot that he was a very good starter for the Marlins back in the day. It seems like eons ago but it really has only been 5 years since he's been a regular starter (2003 with CIN). However, it's been 8 years since his very good year of 2000 with FLA so many people think of his injury history and the fact that he's been pretty much a reliever since his injuries and can't comprehend that he's a viable starter.

 

He is surprising me, that's for sure. Can he keep it up? I think he can. He's bound for a letdown at SOME point but how big of a letdown is yet to be determined. Also, he hasn't pitched more than 100 innings since 2003, either, so maybe he'll start running out of gas in late summer? Maybe not/who knows?

I'd personally put the over/under for Dempster this season at 175, and that's just using Braden Looper's 2007 as the baseline.

Maybe, just maybe, Yost will realize that just because Mota has pitched moderately well for the last couple months doesn't mean he's an automatic 8th inning guy.
