Kelvin "Slimeball" Sampson and Cheatiana

Can't say I did see this coming. I wonder if Indiana will fire him immediately or wait? If our program had a coach like that at Wisconsin, i'd be demanding that he/she be immediately fired. Glad we have class acts in BR and BB. Amazing how a "clean" and prominent program can go downhill so quickly. Then again... they did hire "trash" two years ago.

When are colleges going to learn that once a dirty coach, always a dirty coach, or is the pressure to win really gotten that bad?

Without wanting to sound overly naive, my hope is that Wisconsin would not seriously consider coaches with that kind of track record to begin with.
Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

I agree. Indiana knew what they were getting into when they hired him.

The AD at Indiana said it "Hasn't been decided" when asked if he would be fired. I'd say that's not exactly great news for Sampson.

Wow, that's not a good quote for Kelvin at all. I'm expecting him to be out by next week.

The silver lining I see in this poop-cloud is that it is possible that Indiana will get punished by the NCAA, possibly losing scholarships for the men's BB squad.

Until Sampson got hired at IU I never knew he had this kind of reputation. I always thought he was well-respected, wasn't he even the president of the coaches association?

However, I don't think UW fans should be too smug about this. UW has committed plenty of NCAA infractions over the years. That's the most well-known one, but it alludes to other recent "major" violations at UW, which, iirc, included bribes paid to coaches by boosters.

I don't remember that(although i am only 24), when did UW's boosters pay coaches?

Isn't all of this still from when he was at Oklahoma? I thought that was what I read was that it was that he lied about things and the NCAA found out he lied. I could be wrong.

It's new stuff, geographically, but it's basically a repeat of what he did in Norman. Among other things, he was specifically barred from participating in 3-way calls with recruits, and he went ahead and did it -- repeatedly, apparently.

I feel no sympathy for Indiana, though. They knew exactly what they were getting when they hired this guy.

Yeah, I don't remember bribes to coaches at UW either. The thing with "Shoegate" was it was a player infraction, not a coach infraction. I still think that violation was rubbish, and UW got hit a lot harder than it should have.

In my opinion, what Sampson did was a lot worse than any shoe infraction. Breaking rules after you have already been hit once is pretty bad. I don't have much sympathy for IU. They knew his track record when they hired him, now have to deal with the consequences.

I really don't see any way Bob Knight would go back to Indiana. They're losing Gordon and White next year anyway so it's hard to imagine they'll be that great anyway, I mean they still haven't even beaten a ranked team this year with the two of them. In Andy Katz chat he mentioned Tony Bennett for a possible replacement. It's obviously hearsay but that would still really suck.

if that were to happen, the winner between Indiana and WI would be lucky to score 55 points. I'll bet the under on that one.

I think technically he'll be suspended before being fired. Apparently there's something in the contract that will keep it from happening during the season. But yeah, he's done.

So....they paid him $750,000 to go away? That's insane!! They're going to be in deep trouble with the NCAA, even with getting rid of him, and they STILL have to pay him to go away? That's unbelievable. But, good riddance.

The players apparently are pouting about Sampson's ouster. They've threatened not to play for anyone else, and several skipped practice on Friday.

It's probably just an empty threat, but I wonder what would happen if a bunch them quit. IU probably could put together a competent team of mid-season walk-ons.

Better for Wisconsin's chances to win the Big Ten
