Brewers Acquire Outfielder Luis Matos From Giants

Still only 24 and 3 (partial) years of MLB experience already. Pretty good get for nothing for an OF lacking depth right now. Might see a corresponding move on Perk/Lockridge, though.

Interesting acquisition. 2025 OPS .691 is something to work with. Adds to our Venezuelan roster!

Looks like Matos is out of options. So I’d assume that means Perkins will be optioned to AAA. 
 

I don’t know anything about Matos other than looking at his stats page. Nothing real exciting there.

No minor league options remaining.  So short term is a replacement on the roster for Quero?

Matos was the Giants 7th ranked prospect going in 2023.  MLB Pipeline gave him a 60 grade hit tool. 

Hasn't shown that in the big leagues but maybe there is something there.

Actually he was their 3rd ranked prospect in 2022 just ahead of.... Kyle Harrison

Interesting tidbit, it seems Matos lost his roster spot to Jared Oliva to start the year ... Oliva played with us in Nashville in '25.

Really interesting flyer. Top prospect not long ago. I would not be mad at all if Chourio and Contreras, etc unlocked the potential for us. No cost. I'm here for it.

I'm expecting Andrew Vaughn 2.0.

Cash formed a solid DP combo with PTBNL.

Projected for a .700 OPS with a little bit of power. It seems like the projections do not like his defense.

This seems like a better 40 man roster option than Peralta.

He is a really nice reclamation project. It's going to be challenging to keep him on the MLB roster though especially if his defense is bad.

I’m all for the Brewers making TONZ of trades. And that’s exactly what they’ve been doing. Keep working the fringes. The very act dims complacency and stokes competition. And the Brewers track record is admirable. Not many complete stinkers. Plenty of win-wins. And plenty of fleecing. 

Yes, trades and on the fringes is where this front office excels.

I imagine Quero gets optioned because they don’t want him sitting on the bench a lot and Matos is our short term DH against LHP while Chourio and Vaughn are injured and if he performs could stay on the roster even when Chourio returns.

Looks to me like an audition for a roster spot while Chourio sits. After that it'll be tough because Lockridge & Perkins both offer things the Brewers value that Matos doesn't.

 I know It was just spring training, but this spring in 55 PAs he K'd only 3 times. You don't see stuff like that anymore.

When we played Frisco I thought his ABs were pretty competitive & it annoyed me.

Sounds good to me 😀.

Solid move, give the guy a month on the roster or so. If he struggles it's easy to DFA and maybe he clears waivers and except a AAA assignment. There is still enough upside there to be a big time bat. 

Last he hit 8 bombs in 172 ab's in one of the most difficult HR stadiums. Add in some bad luck with a .248 average on balls batted in play and solid AAA numbers and the guy is worth 50 ab's or so to take a look.

He hit .331 with 12 hr and 15 sb in AA/AAA as a 21 year old. He was probably rushing to the bigs but hit .250 with decent k and bb number in the bigs. This upside is real, maybe some shades of what we have seen from from Joey Weimer with the Nats to start the year.

While nothing must’ve jumped off the page on Matos’s scouting report, he does come from the Giants, one of the worst organizations at developing talent,  so odds are pretty good there just might be some untapped potential in Matos.

Maybe that is the "problem"?  He has poor barrel and exit velocity numbers.  Maybe he has to swing a bit harder and make less weak contact. Be ok with striking out a bit more to make your contact do more.
