  1. Derek Johnson never pitched in MLB or the minors, but he's a very good coach. Some key hitters have started the season slowly, not really a rare thing. Crappy, but not rare.
  2. Useless but mildly interesting fact for the day: Quintana throws lefty but bats righty. Pretty rare combo.
  3. He hit 15 HRs last season, as a scrawny 22-yo. I think he has already demonstrated pop, but to your point, the discipline is the key now. He hit at every level of the minors, & had scouts raving about his contact ability all the way up the ladder. I believe Arcia will become a perennial .800+ OPS bat, & I think that could be as soon as this season. And because of that, I think shipping him off for a partial season of Machado is an awful idea.
  4. RIP Davey. I also was surprised he was 73, would've guessed 10 years younger. His joy for the game was always very apparent. I always smiled when he'd do the on-field instructionals post-game.
  5. Thames is minority partner. Majority shareholder is actually Bill Hall.
  6. This is anecdotal, but I feel like it's been pretty common (at least for the Brewers in recent years) to not run starters out there for 100 pitches/deeper outings all that often this early in the season, regardless of how well a guy is pitching. Seems like they've eased guys into the more midseason pitch counts as opposed to gunning for them right out of the gates. I also wouldn't be shocked if there's a strategic higher useage plan for the bullpen, but my initial hunch is the SPs are just being eased into the season.
  7. What was the udder option? Letting him milk a contract for all it's worth knowing that he is injured? I'm laughing. Well done, Interwebs. Ditto
  8. I... did not know this was a thing that existed. Thank you.
  9. Awesome, awesome win. I caught the final two plate appearances in the car. Ueck's calls were great!
  10. That's been my assumption as well. Once the sample case & Biogenesis story came out, I remembered reading that Braun had trained with A-Rod sometimes in the off-season while Braun was still at Miami. Made me suspicious, since I've long thought A-Rod's arrival & studliness in MLB two years removed from high school smelled fishy, or PED-y. He's a guy I also believe used throughout his career, maybe not nonstop, but I definitely think he wasn't just using around 2013.
  11. We could always bump the Scott Rolen thread!
  12. Looks like he is also in the prime of his mustache career, which is the most concerning thing to me Judging from your avatar pic, this I presume is a topic you take seriously. I agree on his stache game, it looks very strong.
  13. Some info on Mikolas, from the ever-reliable FanGraphs --
  14. Wouldn’t make too many assumptions yet. Agreed. I think it will be rotated between guys to give days off. I'd bet Braun winds up sitting the most against RH starters. I think Fear The Chorizo might be right about why Braun is starting this time. Plus, Santana hit RHP really well last season, he doesn't look to have a large platoon split.
  15. Yeah, pretty stupid. So now there are unwritten rules where you can't try to beat a shift? I mean... the Twins *did* just sign Lynn. Maybe Unwrittenrulesitis is an airborne disease?
  16. Perdomo has been almost 100% literally a two-pitch pitcher. Combined, he threw his sinker & cutter (or slider, depending on what system defines the pitch) over 90% of the time. He apparently flirts with a changeup or some form of splitter, but he didn't throw it much last season. As noted in the pitcher matchup graphic in the lead post, he led the NL in GB% last year. So he's doing that part right. FanGraphs had an article last month about two-pitch pitchers with a brief note on Perdomo -- Interestingly, there were three other Pads arms that made this article's list of two-pitch guys. Clayton Richard, Dinelson Lamet, & Jhoulys Chacín (obv. he's moved on). I wonder if there's a larger strategy here, that if they can get even one guy to add an effective third offering, they'll potentially have uncovered their own TOR ace.

  18. How calm he was as he stood back up out of his slide, to make the throw... the guy is an elite defensive player. So awesome to watch.
  19. Good read from FanGraphs on the Pads' rookie southpaw Lucchesi. He might be particularly difficult to face on the first time seeing him.
  20. Lineups to be added after they become available. Happy day after Opening Day! Let's go get another W! 162-0, here we come! 21. Giancarlo Stanton's second HR from yesterday. Ball go very, very, very far. https://streamable.com/7tiba
  22. Barring regression, and with the expectation of a Villar rebound, that may be the most solid top-to-bottom lineup this team has fielded in some time. They fielded this lineup a few times in spring, but knowing these guys will now be playing whole games just adds to the excitement. When I read through it, my thought was "That's a really solid lineup!" Here's hoping Villar bounces back to adequate, & guys like Shaw & Pina don't drop off too much. I also think Arcia is going to take a nice step forward at the plate this year.
