  2. Those Heyman packages seem pretty light in terms of talent we'd be sending. Hiura is a player I think the club should keep; I agree with Brew4U there. I think the Marlins could get more for Realmuto... and it'd probably take Hiura from us to get it done imo.
  3. It's crazy to think that this was so long ago now, but A-Rod's 10 yr/$250M contract was signed in 2000! Machado doesn't have the pedigree A-Rod did at that point, but a 10-yr contract you have to assume will be over $300M. That is insane money. If you grade A-Rod's deal on a curve, I wonder what its dollar amount would equate to in 2018. $400M? There just weren't contracts like his before he signed that one.
  4. I agree with everything you said about Machado, but there is no way the Brewers can afford him long-term, and I think also zero chance he doesn't go to the FA market to drive up his price tag.
  5. Lorenzo Cain says hi. But yes...I still agree with you that those deals will likely be the exception rather than the rule. I remember seeing an interview with Stearns in Spring Training where he spoke about the Cain signing. He said something like they'd determined Cain's skillet was "well insulated", & they felt he'll age better than a typical player. I thought that was interesting -- the DS team definitely has its methods, & so far I can't argue with much of anything they've done.
  6. Don't we control Yelich for 5 years? Yes. He's under contract through 2021, with a club option for 2022.
  7. Agreed. As I typed out my last post, you can kinda see I eventually talked myself to that spot by the end. I feel like Freddy Peralta would be about the price point to get a deal done, but I don't want to pay that much. Hamels is intriguing, but the notion that he might be able to force you to pick up his 2019 option makes me leery. From Cot's Contracts, Hamels has the ability to block trades to 20 teams in each season of the contract (my reading is that he can pick a new list of 20 each season). I'm guessing Milwaukee is probably among those 20 teams for 2018. I'd see if Hamels would agree to waive his NTC without us picking up the '19 option, as a first step. If he said No, having to guarantee him $20M for next year as well would mean I wouldn't give up anything of real value, prospect-wise.

  9. Great article. All I have to say is THANK GOD the Mets rebuffed the Gomez trade! Hear hear. There are a lot of stats in the article to blow you away about Hader, but my favorite is: ... That's an AVG of .013, if you're keeping score at home.
  10. Still a lot of time for everything to change. That said, I like what we are doing so far. I just hope we can keep up an above average pace as the season goes on. True that, but 2 months of mashing is no fluke. Seems like every night on the highlights I see your guys hitting bombs...it's scary. The Cubs have some thump too, but you're thumpier. Funny what perspective can do. I hadn't even noticed that the Brewers are 2nd in the NL in homers.
  11. Hypothetically, could SD & Toronto make QO's to Ross & Happ? Unless I've missed something, it looks like neither has been QO'd previously. Both should be eligible for one. If that's true, the value we might need to beat would be equivalent to the sandwich- round immediately after the 1st round. I suppose either player might be enticed to accept the QO, though -- Happ moreso. Maybe Toronto wouldn't offer him. I think I'd be ok with Hasuer+Stokes for either, but I'm not sure how excited either club would be with either prospect, compared against a comp pick. Stokes has developed some pop, but I'm not sure his pure hit tool is sharp enough to be more than a 4th OF (a good one, but still not a starter on a good team). Hauser went #2-9 in the 2011 draft, so he's a decent example of the type of player available with the comp picks. But in his age-25 season, is he attractive enough to a rebuilding project like the Pads or Blue Jays? I feel like Hauser+Stokes would be the lower end of what would get it done. The earlier you look to make the move, probably the less competition you have, so maybe it's worth floating that offer to see what the response is. EDIT: I do agree with tmwiese, & think Stearns will stick with what we've got in-house. The club has done a nice job cycling through the younger arms (Houser included), & if I had to bet I'd bet against a trade for Happ or Ross.
  12. Excellent feature piece on Hader from The Ringer. TL;DR version: his stats are appalling, & he's even filthier than you thought. The latter comment can best be summed up by the included gif of his fastball & slider, overlaid on top of one another. Good luck, batters -- https://mobile.twitter.com/PitchingNinja/status/999117208679837696/photo/1
  13. Some more numbers on Hiura's season so far, to contextualize. In April, his line was an underwhelming .238/.301/.333/.634. So far in May, he's at .349/.408/.606/1.014, with multi-hit games in 13 of 26 games. He's also only struck out 4 times in his last 10 games. The guy is dialed in! Hope he can stay consistent & move on up to Biloxi this season.
  14. I checked him out as well. Only concern I have with him is his high BB rates.

  16. I just think that relies too heavily on a guy who was absolutely terrible last year (Guerra), and a guy coming off a major injury (Nelson) to be comfortable with. And it again assumes that none of them get injured along the way. I will agree with Clancy, though: no need to break the bank, but I'd expect a modest deal for a solid starter arm. Ideally, it is for a controllable arm, no rentals for a few months. In general, I agree with this concept 100%. But to be honest, I'd be fine with a rental of a SP acquisition with our current rotation mix -- assuming it would mean a very palatable trade price. JA Happ looks like a very intriguing rental candidate imo. Given his age, I wonder how reasonable the cost might be. Unless there's a Verlander-type rental option available, I'd like to see the Brewers go after Happ.
  17. Heading into play today, JJ's ERA+ is 1213. Hader's is 351. !
  18. He's really a big guy, very big frame. I can see why the initial projections on him were that he'd be limited to a corner spot as he filled out.

  20. I'll echo all the other comments -- great to see him hitting. Hope he can keep it going! Would be big to have another good bat in the pipeline.
  21. I agree, she has made big time improvements. I wasn't a fan initially, but honestly she won me over when she started breaking out her Spanish speaking skills in interviews. That's savvy & very dedicated. There can't be that many sideline reporters around the league (aside from Spanish language broadcasts) that bring that to the table.
  22. Agree with your theme, but Prince. I miss prime Prince Fielder... My optimistic spin for this post is... I hope we have another 50 HR hitter in our farm system soon!
  23. There will always be people here that are against trading any of #TehProspectz, especially ones they've seen in person in the minors. Just because someone is against trading for Archer doesn't mean they're against trading any young talent away. I can't think of a time where I saw posters here stating they're never in favor of trading prospects. Disagreeing on the value of said prospect vs MLB players? Sure, def. happens frequently. A performance like Peralta's is a good example though -- he might wind up being a flash in the pan, & never make it in the bigs. But yesterday was a great glimpse of why sometimes folks are hesitant to part with young talent. If we're moving them on, I want to make sure it's for the right value. It goes without saying that a small market franchise needs to be very careful in how they utilize their player capital. Whether it's in performance at the MLB level, or in trade value, young players are arguably our best source of capital. So I'd hope the club is very discerning in how they spend it. Not saying you don't share any of the above thoughts. It just irks me when the notion is floated that there's a subset of fans that never want to trade propsects, & have no logical reasoning behind how highly they value them.
  24. Found this in a quick Twitter search, from yesterday: Still in that 150-foot flat ground stage. Slow and steady.https://twitter.com/bbamrah/status/995727131312361472?s=19
