  1. From the USA Today article MassHaas linked to in post #40... "If you don't make right decision," Melvin says, "it can really cost you. And in our division, where we think it can be won or lost by one to three games, that's an important thing." Pretty sad to say, I think Melvin actually believes that Mark Kotsay is a good addition. Why else do you give an un-sought-after older player a guaranteed contract? It's just so frustrating. I hope somehow my assumption is proven wrong, but at this point I'm just assuming Kotsay is going to be 'in ur dugout, killing ur team'
  2. Hah, I didn't even catch myself saying it. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  3. Can't say I disagree about Kotsay (for whatever reason appears to be a lock), but I'm not saying I like it - especially if they start him over Dickerson on opening day. C'mon Melvin. Get Kotsay on the All-Star ballot. Make it happen.
  4. And that was the heaviest snow I've ever shoveled. Good grief.
  5. Yeah, this is definitely the most lightning I've ever seen accompany a winter storm
  6. 1B/OF - Kotsay (default as there is no way he isn't making it) That's just so depressing. (I'm not disagreeing with you)
  7. Ahck. Thanks for the update, Daubs. Sorry for the Haudricourts' loss. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  8. If the club actually is shopping Gamel with intent to move him soon, like Hammer had heard, then I could see not signing a scrap-heap guy like Bonderman. If Melvin can find a team that believes in his bat (shouldn't be hard) that wants to stick with him at 3B (there's your tricky part), the return could be well worth dealing Mat. I still cringe at the thought of losing that cost-controlled, excellent LH bat, but if the pitching return is worthwhile, you have to check it out. Sorry, to steer this post back more on-topic, according to a couple Jerry Crasnick tweets earlier this month, Bonderman isn't an option He's just never been the same pitcher after inflammation in his elbow in '07, & then a circulatory problem in his shoulder in '08.
  9. TH reported that the Brewers' offer was incentive-based as well, but like I said, the opportunity is what the Mets had/have over the Brewers. The last sentence you quoted says it all. Chris is a smart guy, he knew there was a chance he could've wound up working in a starting role. He just felt he had a far greater chance with the Mets, and he was 100% right. There's nothing from that article that says anything about a lowball offer (in terms of money), you're completely inserting that.
  10. I don't think you can honestly look at the Mets' starting pitching & the Brewers' starting pitching at the time Capuano made his decision & tell me he had an equal shot to make the rotation with either team. The Mets were clearly a better opportunity for him. All of the comments indicate Capuano was looking for his best shot at starting, not that the Brewers lowballed him just so they could say they made him an offer.
  11. So is it safe to assume, then, that you have nothing tangible to back this up?
  12. Awesome win by Marquette. DJO with the icewater in his veins... nice.
  13. "Check[ing] the blogs" reveals that Capuano wanted a more guaranteed spot to start, just like everyone has been saying in this thread. I couldn't find anything to indicate Capuano felt jilted by the Brewers. The decision to part seems, at the very worst, mutual. McCalvy: Haudricourt: And here is a tweet from ESPN New York reporter Adam Rubin when Cappy signed with the Mets: That's literally everything I can find. Can you share where you saw on a blog that Cappy was disappointed?
  14. And only 7 (iirc) of the at-large bids went to non-power conferences.
  15. I have no problems keeping Dickerson. I think he is a very solid backup outfielder. I think Boggs would be a great guy to have off the bench too. The guy I have a problem with keeping is Kotsay. Exactly. Both are probably better hitters, and both are far superior defenders. The Kotsay signing didn't make sense when it happened, and it makes less & less sense as time passes. My only guess is that Melvin and/or Roenicke have man crushes on the guy.
  16. Sincerely hope everything is ok for the Haudricourt family. Tom has been away for almost a week & a half now... just hope it's not bad news.
  17. But to suggest that he should be cut because of 61 injury-rusted PA as a Brewer and some spring training games strikes me as very short-sighted. Not to mention the fact that, after today's game, his ST slash line stands at .313/.371/.438/.809.
  18. Like tyguy said, the Brewers wanted & pursued Cappy. He just wanted a role where he'd have a more clear-cut chance to start, so he told the Brewers 'no thanks'. Fire Melvin!
  19. I don't disagree about Chapman having more value as a starter (nothing to disagree with). However, his highest IP total to date is the 118.1 he threw in the 2008-09 season (Serie Nacional's season runs from Nov. through April). He pitched in 22 games that season, which averages out to less than 6 innings per game, even if you just average it over the 20 starts he made. For comparison's sake, he threw 109 IP last season, and only started in 13 of his 39 games played in the minors. It's not a good long-term decision, but I'm not sure the Reds should expect Chapman's arm to hold up to more than maybe 125-130 innings this season (140-150 if you really want to push him). If Jocketty wants to win now, making Chapman the closer (I'd personally prefer relief ace/fireman) would probably allow the Reds to have him pitching for them the entire season. Just playing devil's advocate -- he's really not even close to being ready for a full starter's workload. To me the obviously correct move is to stretch him out to about 125+ IP this season, shut him down, & keep stretching him out in the future. If his birthday's legit, he's only in his age-23 season. You could even skip some of his starts to spread his contributions out over a longer portion of the season, if desired.
  20. Great win by Bucky. Like jjfanec said, the supporting cast stepped up big-time tonight. Leuer wasn't bad either http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Also, KSU players not named Pullen shot a combined 9-26. The Badgers were lucky to survive with Pullen so red-hot & Taylor so ice-cold. But what a huge block by Jordan to close out the game.
  21. I could definitely see Gamel getting moved for some rotation depth at this point. Obviously I like the guy & would prefer him kept around, but I could definitely see it happening.
  22. Plesac has been working in recent seasons for the White Sox tv studio crew iirc. I wouldn't expect him to know Brewers prospects, but then like pitchleague said, that's just disappointing coverage. Jonathan Mayo did a really nice job handicapping the Brewers' system not too long ago for MLB.com, so it's not like they didn't have other options.
  23. After a not so exciting last night and first batch today it has picked up today. I thought there were plenty of close games yesterday -- Richmond-Vandy, Morehead St.-Louisville, Butler-ODU, UCLA-MSU, Temple-PSU, UK-Princeton. The widest margin of victory in any of those games was 3 points. So far this tournament has been a thrilling one overall imo. I'm really excited right now for Marquette-Xavier to tip in a few. Go MU!
  24. Well, the mascot is a dog.
