  1. Very true... but with our new manager I wonder whether or not Gomez would actually get sent to AAA to try & figure things out.
  2. Hah. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif McClung really is about as opposite to Kenny Powers as it gets, so I find that pretty funny.
  3. As the jsonline blog said today, the team needs some guys with pop on the bench, not a bunch of singles hitters. Then Dickerson should be a safe bet to make the bench. He's got very good pop for a guy that can also play a good CF. At this point, I'd really like to see Gomez non-tendered.
  4. Per an Adam McCalvy blog post, Bob is going to appear on MLB Network's Studio 42, hosted by Bob Costas.
  5. McClung is now coaching a Florida girls' HS basketball program (via TH). It's not going very well so far:
  6. I like the fact that Votto won it so convincingly, even if I'm still kind of horrified by the methodology used to get there ("it's the most VALUABLE player, not the most outstanding player," "Votto's team won the division, Pujols missed the playoffs," etc.). This is what I thought about it too. Nice to see the voters make the right pick, even if it's basically for the wrong reason(s).
  7. What's really annoying to me about the whole situation is the old, 'you get more for bats in the offseason' nonsense. I just don't think a GM should be creating & abiding by arbitrary rules like that. I've really come around to not wanting to see Melvin as part of the organization's future anymore. I just don't think he has a solid plan, but I hope he proves otherwise.
  8. A's won the bidding, but apparently can't get a deal worked out (via MLBTR). They'll get their posting fee back if they aren't able to sign Iwakuma. The offer from OAK was apparently worth roughly $3.8M per year, so I can see why Iwakuma turned it down (he'll be a FA after this season).
  9. Nats won't offer Josh Willingham an extension (h/t to FanGraphs) He's under team salary control for 2011, and is another corner power bat to cut into the Fielder market. Willingham is a decent target for a team seeking a DH/1B guy, since his main problem thus far has been staying healthy.
  10. Duke was never regarded as highly as Bumgarner. I don't get why you wanted to just take a dump on prospects because a guy with average stuff wound up getting released after having a below-avg. career so far. Duke proves nothing about any other player aside from Zach Duke.
  11. I think the Brewers really like Hunter Morris. Like, REALLY LIKE Hunter Morris. I was excited about him when he was drafted. I'm glad to hear that you think he's impressed the F.O. --love 'em or hate 'em, they seem to scout bats well.
  12. You'd think so, wouldn't you? When I saw this rumor yesterday I just shook my head.
  13. Awesome. Good thing he won't waste his time this offseason getting stronger.
  14. I wish you wouldn't put words into my mouth that I didn't even say. It is purely based on Jeffress that I saw a few years ago and what I saw this year and the same with Joba it has absolutely nothing to do with Jeffress or Joba being in the bullpen. Sorry for putting words in your mouth; I definitely made an assumption. I've just seen the Jeffress-Chamberlain comp. around BF recently & I figure the bullpen/SP waffling is where it came from. Thanks for setting me straight when it comes to your stance. I agree with PrinceFielderx1, though. Jeffress's curveball got a lot of praise this season, and I thought it looked decent in his MLB time. I still don't think Joba is a good comparison for Jeffress, but I can agree to disagree.
  15. No it is based on seeing both. They both rely on a hard fastball which they would not be able to throw as hard when they are a starter thus they are better as RP. And what else is it based on? Yes, both guys have huge fastballs... what about their mechanics, secondary pitches, etc.? This imo is a comparison that is 100% due to Jeffress throwing innings as a RP (due to his own personal wishes this season), and nothing tangibly more. The Yankees thought Joba was a starter and when his velocity had to come down and he had to develop a third pitch which he never really developed fully he became a bullpen guy. The Yankees didn't like his mechanics; they were worried that he'd get hurt. They changed his mechanics & then Joba wasn't able to throw as hard. His velocity "had to come down" because the Yankees thought he'd be at risk of hurting himself if he kept his old mechanics. It wasn't just a random drop in velocity. Jeffress's mechanics haven't had to have been changed as best I can tell. Imo it's just a sloppy comparison.
  16. I think this is probably a nice move by TEX, but time will tell. Given that he pitched for Texas Tech, not sure the Brewers ever had much of a shot at him. Oh well.
  17. Would you take Burnett and Joba for say Todd Coffey and Carlos Villanueva? There is absolutely no reason for the Yankees to be interested in this. Or, in the words of Principessa21, "Absolutely not" Burnett's contract is a 100% horrible idea for the Brewers. As for Joba the Brewers already have the next Joba in Jeffress. This comparison is annoying to me. I've seen it before on BF.net -- do you have anything specific that it's based on, or is it just as simple as, "well, they're both guys that throw hard & their teams think they might be better off as RPs"? Honestly there's no good comparison btw. Chamberlain & Jeffress as best I can see, unless you just oversimplify & equate them based on velocity & theoretical RP role.
  18. But Jeter was still good enough to lead the leauge in a major offensive category! 515 outs meant he shared that honor with Juan Pierre.
  19. Stat folks are happy, but they just have to find a quantifiable way to describe it before discussing it. I hear there's work being done on HAR (happiness above replacement) over at FanGraphs.
  20. And in '08 he was 3-1 against MIN in with a 2.60 ERA. Using tiny samples in player analysis is really a waste of time.
  21. It's a really cool video. Like the song too.
  22. If Melvin is able to get Beckham & Floyd for Prince, I'll be in the hospital from attempting backflips.
  23. Even last year, he had stretches were he was flailing badly and there's no coincidence that the team struggled when he did. So he's not worth paying as though he's a key member of the lineup, but he's a key member of the lineup?
  24. I can't say I haven't gotten the impression that Braun wasn't giving it 100% this season. But, seriously, professional beat writer? This guy will demonstrate just exactly what you have to do to get fired from the JS Brewers beat imo.
  25. How serious is the 'Hunter Morris playing 3B' stuff? Is that basically just trying him out there in the AFL because why the heck not, or is this something the Brewers & Hunter want to commit to?
