  1. I agree with the Hoff-love here. His control & command are probably the best I have ever seen from a pitcher, even at this point in his career. Honestly as far as Brewers go, I can only think of Sheets & Gallardo when they are 'on' -- that's basically how accurate Trevor seems with his pitches on a daily basis. Does Hoffman have a team option on his contract next year? No, just a one-year deal. Cot's link.
  2. You're not describing "discussions" -- you're describing "verbal abuse" & 'not taking it offa no one' And you should take that verbal "abuse" in your home ballpark because? I dunno... maybe because I feel like I'm past the part of my life when I feel like I need to get up in someone's face for being a dipwad. If anything, doing so makes me feel like an even bigger idiot... like what Patrick was talking about.
  3. Realistically, though, why let some other fan belittle your team and not respond? Because if the choice is between being an idiot that starts a fight, & not being an idiot that starts a fight, I go with the latter every time.
  4. I really like Nelson and this is some 'bad' news, but Brad has to pick it up. It looks like he'll have a few weeks to do just that. I'm glad this isn't just an outright release of Nelson/add of Catalanotto. I firmly believe that he's going to get some results & pretty soon. The notion that we might lose Nelson really reminds me of how Grant Balfour was handled, and clearly (imo) the Brewers would have been better off just trusting that Balfour hadn't forgotten how to be an effective pitcher.
  5. It's astounding he has one pitch, and they still flail at it. He does seem to vary how he throws it, though -- sometimes as a 'true' cutter (whatever that might mean), & others as more of just a good old-fashioned slider. Imo it's basically two pitches for him, since he can make it break harder & down more when he seems to need it. Also, the topic of DiFelice v. LHP has been addressed many times here. If you look at his splits in the minors, he actually had great success against LHB -- just like Mo Rivera, bc the cutter breaks right in on the hands of LH hitters... and DiFelice actually has the command to come inside without hitting too many dudes. (though I do agree that part of the reason for all the success he's had so far is Macha limiting him against LHB) I am actually in the camp that would like to see DiFelice stretched out & used as a SP. His command imho compares most favorably to two guys on the team -- Gallardo & Hoffman.
  6. Imo locking Rickie up right now is a dicey move. I think I'd prefer to just see him play out his arby time here, and if it's still making sense & the Brewers can work out an extension before he hits FA... go for it. I'd just hate to see a contract doled out based on a couple months of play. I want to complement ESPN for calling Weeks as one of 3 players on the decline at 2B to start the season. Fantastic as always. Hahaha! This is great stuff... I remember thinking when I saw that ESPN 'confuscation' scroll across the bottom of my screen, 'Boy, they really don't do their homework, do they?' This is purely anecdotal, but the homeruns Rickie hits seem to be frozen ropes, not the towering bombs other guys hit. Hard to not be excited about 8HRs from him on May 12, no matter how you slice it. Yeah, Rickie's really (imho) showing why people -- including his teammates -- have gushed about his swing for so long. His success so far this season brings to mind the phrase, 'When he hits it, it stays hit.' And honestly, it's not just the HRs -- he's been turning seemingly everything he squares up on into screaming liners that just don't look like they want to stop. [Lawrie]'s a guy they can tell to correct something, and he actually goes out and does it... those guys are pretty rare. I recall encountering some organizational quotes in other articles praising Lawrie for the same/similar things. The jist I got was that the coaches really only feel like they have to tell him things once, and he 'gets' it.
  7. And after I just spent time defending Nelson in the Transactions forum... I'm really surprised to see this move. The only move that makes sense is Cat over Nelson, which as best I can tell means that Brad will likely get claimed if/when the Crew tries to pass him through waivers & send him to Nashville. On the other hand, maybe this is a sign that DM & Co. were able to work out a trade in order to get something in return for Nelson? In any event I really don't like the move if it means we will basically have to sign LHB vets to shore up the bench for the next 2-3 seasons instead of just hanging onto Nelson.
  8. If the Brewers decide that, not only has he struggled thus far (let's not forget Brad has come up just short on a couple of shots so far that would have been huge PH HR), but that he has also completely lost (basically overnight) the ability to post what his MLEs indicate he is capable of doing, then yes I think Nelson shoud feel his roster spot is in jeopardy. On the other hand, if the Brewers see this as a slump that just so happens to be taking place at the outset of the season (& when it stands out readily visible to fans), and see that Nelson hasn't forgotten how to hit... and that cutting him would be letting a very solid, cheap LHB in his physical prime go for nothing... then I don't think Nelson has any reason to sweat.
  9. While I think there is something to be said for the psychological side of the game, I tend to agree with rluz & the opinion that knuckleheads that spout this kinda stuff off should have to be able to back it up, not just claim, 'Hey, I was a pretty crummy GM for a few seasons.. just take my word on it...'
  10. But the flip-side to that coin FtJ, is why wouldn't you be ok with using wOBA?
  11. I could really give two hoots whether or not someone is a "proven major leaguer". Mark DiFelice wasn't a "proven major leaguer" & he seems to be doing just fine -- in fact, he was hit with the dreaded 'AAAA player' label by many/most. Iirc Briggs, you posted at one point about how DiFelice wasn't a good MLB option since he wasn't a proven MLBer with a proven out pitch, etc. (apologies if you never did) And if you really think Nelson's major league career is hanging by a thread, I honestly have no idea what to say. They are not comparable in the least as far as what they've accomplished. Unfortunately that carries just about zero relevance to the issue of who is a better choice for the Brewers heading forward. One is in his age-31 season & has a price tag of $1.5M for 2009, while the other is in his age-26 season & is under salary control for ~ 6 seasons & is extraordinarily cheap for this season & the next 2 after that. I don't know... it just doesn't seem like a hard decision to me. Just as an fyi, here is the MLE line (park & league-adjusted, via minorleaguesplits.com) for Nelson, based on his 2008 AAA Ab v. RHP -- .265/.339/.430. Hinske's career MLB line v. RHP is .264/.347/.456. So for what is almost a completely negligible difference, people are advocating cutting Nelson & losing him entirely. Makes no sense to me.
  12. Duffy, McGehee, and Nelson are really not those type of players. Except that Nelson is, and is younger & cheaper than Hinske. Hinske & Nelson play the same positions (unless you count Hinske playing 3B poorly as some kind of edge). There is absolutely zero reason that the Crew should be looking to dump Nelson, and especially zero reason when his purported replacement would be the same exact player except older.
  13. Congrats EDR! Hope all is well for the wife & little one too. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Also, what Crew07 said.
  14. I don't think Braun is a bad guy. He's just not the kind of professional athlete I find particularly appealing. So you're saying you're not one to 'kick it on the beach in Malibu for a while & be cool'? Braun is just... well, he's like that friend you have that you know means well, but always seems to say the wrong thing at the wrong time. But chicks dig the longball, so...
  15. So you actually want to see fights? That's messed up imo.
  16. Great news on both those guys; thanks for sharing people http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  17. What a dolt. Brenly is basically a knucklehead that gets credit for having arguably the best duo of SP in the steroid era that carried him to a lucky, weak g.7 bleeder basehit WS victory. I agree with Gobias that Melvin is to be commended for not hiring this dolt (though not too much... doesn't seem that hard to avoid this guy). Honestly I think the only reason he was even considered is that he has 'name recognition' -- apparently that's supposed to help you manage?
  18. agreed, FtJ. What's wrong with that? They are in OUR ballpark. If they can't handle it, then don't show up to an opposing team's ballpark This sounds suspiciously similar to the 'It's my right to boo' defense.
  19. That's pretty cool that all those guys are playing together in Tampa. I continue to wish Crazy Joe good luck.
  20. "Fan crush"... brilliant http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  21. That's exactly what I thought when I saw this thread, Buc. The Cubs' offseason still makes zero sense to me.
  22. The Reds announcers aren't very good at all. Brantley is usually good for one, 'Whhuuuuuuuu?' comment per game. Imo last night it was harping on the Reds 3B (who apparently hadn't much experience at 3B). Brantley slammed him after the innocent mistake of not being able to get that potential double-play ball off the bat of Hart out of his glove cleanly. Something about, 'I don't care if you've never played a position before. You get yourself mentally prepared before the game & make yourself ready to play there.' Uhh, Jeff... the error was on Hairston, and the throw (if caught) beat Weeks to the bag for what would have been a force-out. So yeah, seems like the guy made a decent play out of a bad bobble. The p-b-p guy isn't too great either, but he's made to look better simply by not being Jeff Brantley. Also, how can you not love Dusty Baker managing one of your divisional foes? This is a special treat, and every baseball fan in the world should get to experience how wonderful it is at least once.
  23. The value of having a 2nd big lefty bat in the lineup would be negated by making room for Gamel by dealing Fielder. Except that Fielder would bring a huge return in trade... which wouldn't negate anything. It would make us a far better team.
  24. At this point I doubt Jenks is much better than Nelson in the field. And on offense it probably isn't close. I agree with you on Duffy's usefulness & versatility. I'm glad Melvin & Co. were able to mine a cheap 4th/5th OF.
  25. That's like saying "I didn't mean to drive my car off that cliff" even though you drove past 15 signs saying "SLOW DOWN" and "CLIFF AHEAD" and you went 110mph around the curve anyway HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW?!1?!1?!?!11
