  1. Wait, you mean the Bob Melvin that ESPN & Fox Sports have told me is the Brewers' GM? That dude sucks anyway.
  2. She clearly has a vendetta out for A-Rod. I really, really disagree. I think Roberts just has a vendetta against not making money & not having attention. The crazy thing to me in the debate/discussion of Roberts's credibility, the only thing she's done is proven that she isn't credible. So... where is the debate? Just like in the Duke Lacrosse case, she's picked an automatically villainized 'antagonist', and just basically piled on. Wow, groundbreaking stuff there, Selena -- you've villainized accused rapists & an accused (& admitted) steroid user! Your research & power of persuasion are amazing! Where there is no integrity, there can be no trust.
  3. Like was already posted... in the NHL, NFL, & MLB helmets were once upon a time only for sissies. Heck, some hockey goalies initially opted to not wear helmets, bc they thought it wasn't 'man enough'. The resistance to change never fails to startle me, even though it shouldn't by now.
  4. I agree, and I don't believe the "small sample' argument is valid. Small sample is the definition of a bench player. You need to produce in the limited opportunities you have, or you're not adding any value. This is the type of thinking that can really get a smaller market team like the Brewers in trouble. Nelson has proven that he can hit very well at AAA, and while obviously his 19 ABs this season haven't been good, you don't throw away a powerful LHB that will be cheap for years to come because of 19 AB. Besides, the real reason Nelson is taking so much heat is that the 19 AB are to open the season. He's even shown he can hit at the MLB level (last season)... so really not sure why suddenly 19 PA as a PH is an acceptable small sample to determine, 'Yes, we should risk completely losing that player because of those ABs'. Just makes zero sense to me. EDIT: And Nelson just missed tying the game tonight against the Reds by a fraction of an inch on the bat. I'm sure everyone still feels he should be released?
  5. And Yovani.Don't forget the ghost of Ben Sheets & his guns
  6. Not sure if this totally belongs here, but I just wanted to mention that the ball he hit in the first inning was the hardest ball I've seen hit all year. It reached the wall without ever getting more than 15 feet off the ground, and almost got out. He's really hitting the ball hard right now. Yeah, that was a missle. Those are the types of line drives he's been hitting this season, imo, though. In fact there are a few that stand out in my memory that actually carried all the way out to the opposing LF for an out instead of dropping into LF for base hits, which is what it looked like they'd do off the bat. Way too early to make conclusions about anything, though. I'm glad he's being a bit more aggressive but I fear that he just doen't have the pitch recognition skills to ever be a dominating hitter. He seems more like a guessor, like Hall. Interesting -- honestly I think Rickie has about the best pitch recognition on the team... guys I could see him being behind at this point are Fielder, Counsell, Kendall, & maybe Hardy. I don't view Weeks as a guess hitter at all, but that could just be a reflection of my poor perception http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  7. The only thing that I can say for certain is that Stephen Strasburg, unless his arm falls off of his body, will go #1 overall to the Nationals. Big surprise there, right? Now see... that's why you charge the big bucks to visit 5tooltalk.com! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  8. Oh come on... is it really worth dragging down into semantics? The point is that he was terrible... historically bad, and that comparing even Gamel to him isn't very useful. Honestly, 'worst since 1918' isn't good enough to just let it go?
  9. I had looked at this before, when ESPN used to have ZR data for previous years, and I found one player who had a ZR inferior to Braun's 2007 Unless ZR has been revised (to the best of my knowledge it hasn't), it's not a particularly good metric for defense. Honestly there was a lot of discussion & analysis of Braun during the '07 season at 3B, and I can't remember anything that didn't show him as having been historically bad. My main point is that if Braun's not the absolute worst 3B to ever carry a glove out there at the MLB level, he's basically just in a multi-player tie for 'worst fielding 3B ever'
  10. the DH rule was only added for people who primarily care about scoring and homers and in my opinion has had an overall negative effect on the game and I see the same thing down the road if we allow instant replay. First, replay has already been added. Second, there's been no 'slippery slope' from the DH, so not sure why there would suddenly be one from instant replay. Also, I do not personally know anyone who I would consider a true baseball fan who prefers the DH over the national league style. I don't personally know you, but imo you're being a jerk about this labeling.
  11. Not sure if you meant for the Crew or for the NL, but for the Brewers, here are the splits so far: #8 -- .213/.298/.258/.557 #9 -- .176/.239/.259/.498
  12. Well I have Extra Innings, but from everything I've heard maybe going all-out & adding the MLB network as well is in order.
  13. There's just no truth in claiming that baseball has been unchanged for a century. The game has gone through many rule changes & shifts in playing styles/stats. So, who likes the (in your own words) abomination known as the DH? The answer is all of the dumb, annoying casual fans who do not really like or appreciate baseball and mostly like it when people hit dingers and their favorite team always changes to whoever is the best team at that time. Well, I like it for one. While I'm certainly no genius, I resent your categorization. You certainly don't come across as being very even-minded. Your overstatements & exaggerations make it hard to take this discussion seriously.
  14. I stopped watching Baseball Tonight and Sportscenter years ago. That. My life has been so much more enjoyable http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Ever since then it's been nothing but Yankees/Red Sox, or as a friend call them, YESNESNPN That's good stuff right there. I definitely want to steal that. I don't think you can blame ESPN that this is not a gripping national story line. I agree completely. Really, what's the story here? A good team has whipped the pants off a terrible team for the past two seasons. So what? What's so compelling that Brewers fans should feel slighted? This is just a sample size thing anyway, as the streak will get broken sometime soon... probably this year. Now, if the streak is carried into next season then maybe there's something to discuss. I really don't see it as any more than that the Brewers are good, & the Bucs are anything but. A few plays break differently even just this season & there's not even a streak to talk about. EDIT: I just saw in the other thread that this streak actually appears to be closing in on a MLB record... if that's the case, then my feelings are different. I still won't feel slighted or anything, but it would seem like a good story on which to report, ESPN or otherwise.
  15. There really isn't anything to suggest that Braun wasn't that bad in 2007. He was really, really awful. He didn't get to a lot of balls, and he struggled at turning those he did get to into outs. You basically can't do worse than that. Gamel sounds like he has a legit shot to be a solid defender at 3B. Braun just never really did.
  16. For every pitcher who can't hit, you can find one that can. I doubt this is true. Pitchers on the whole are a woeful group of hitters. Guys like Gallardo & Zambrano are definitely the exceptions. EDIT: For reference's sake, here is the NL composite batting line for pitchers in 2008 (5,578 PA) -- .140/.178/.177/.354
  17. then I am definitely wrong. I hadn't heard that, and would have expected to get something like that from TH. Maybe Russell asked for a bigger role & Melvin told him he had no interest in him for that. In any event, I'm glad to see Branyan thriving & wish it was with the Crew.
  18. Thanks for taking the time to do this...i beg you, please do it as often as possible during the season. Ditto -- really appreciated, CheezWiz. The panoramic shot (even with its magical hill!) really gives a nice view of the ballpark. I hadn't gotten a good look at it, so thanks. I'll also echo pogo's suggestion to chat up any scouts. As long as you let them work, shouldn't be any problem... guys probably appreciate talking to educated fans every now & then. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  19. I couldn't be happier knowing that the UW distanced itself from this chaff.
  20. I think you're just reading it in the sensationalist manner in which Olney framed that bit, though. In fact iirc the Olney description is embellishment (the shock!) -- didn't Melvin basically tell Russ that the ABs he wanted weren't there for him in Milwaukee, but were in Seattle? That's how I'm remembering this. In any event, here's the rest of the segment you quoted, except this time it's not so drastically stated: Melvin seems to like to get guys shots at regular jobs if/when they come available. I have no empirical data to support that, just something that 'seems like' what Melvin does.
  21. I fear the day the game of baseball morphs into a glorified home run derby. This seems like a strawman to me. Adding one more batter for 16 teams in the league isn't going to have that drastic an effect. Besides, if you watch the AL, sure the game is different from the NL, but it's no HR derby.
  22. Did Yost simply have problems communicating his message without being arrogant? I think Yost just had/has communication problems in general. So what do you guys think? Can you teach plate discipline, and if so, how do you do it? ... Are some players simply going to learn it as a natural evolution of their ballplaying skills? ... Are some players doomed to failure? I agree with Tbadder's take. It's ultimately up to the players to actually be able to put things together at the plate. Coaches can stress & teach things again & again, but for some players it just won't ever sink in. Other guys will either already know & practice what's being taught, and the remainder/vast majority of guys will take those teaching points & work them into their approach.
  23. Thanks for posting on that, mletto. But really, we could probably switch any of those three (Braun, Prince, Rickie) around and I'd be happy with it. Me too... but the #s 3 & 4 spots are so important in regards to player status that I doubt Braun & Prince would hit anywhere but those two slots. So then imo the best-case scenario would be Hart-Hardy-Braun-Prince-Weeks -- and I'd be fine with that. The only thing there is that you're banking on Hart having made a fundamental change in his approach & skillset, as opposed to his BB rate being the result of a small sample.
  24. Well if the defense traded for offense is extreme enough (like, say, Adam Everett in his prime), then it could be a nice boost.
  25. Rickie recognizes middle in pitches pretty well and has the bat speed to make opponents pay. I just wanted to comment on this relative to Rickie's HR swing last night. That is why people have been gushing about the guy for years now... even through his struggles. Rickie's abilities at the plate really (imo) are second to none. The bat speed on that HR was just jaw-dropping. I remember Braun commenting last season how Weeks was the 'one Brewers player to watch', and Ryan's justification for that was a comment to the effect of 'he has no holes in his swing'... I apologize, as I can't recall what article that was from -- otherwise I'd link to it.
