  1. The DH would only make it harder for the Brewers to compete because instead of having cheap bench players they'd have to drop additional money on a player who's only value is that of a hitter, costing the team millions extra every season. The Brewers would have benefitted greatly from the DH in recent memory. Having Overbay in the lineup along with Prince would have been a nice option for Melvin (granted, getting Bush back was nice... Lyle/Prince was just an example that popped into my head)
  2. So this is far from a reliable author. Certainly someone who needs to have more than unnamed sources we are supposed to just trust on her say. I agree with Buc that this is important to keep in mind. Roberts doesn't have a track record of making certain her info is correct before she shills it.
  3. Looks like Wells has had success so far at AAA. I hadn't heard of this guy before now. I didn't want to start a whole new thread, & it's sort of on-topic. Check out the banner link from the top of the page to which Ennder linked. A story on pitcher durability, by Daily Herald columnist Mike Imrem. It's days like this that we have to honor the memory of FJM.com. Just don't make 'em the way they used to.
  4. Edit: I think it is very telling that management decided to put Hall out in left. If Braun goes on the DL long term, it appears like the team would call up Gamel to play 3b. That's good reading-between-the-lines, strawboss... though I guess we have no way of knowing for sure. If that would be the scenario, my guess is that we'd see some spot-starting from McGehee against LHP, and Macha would have flexibility in terms of PH & potential late-inning defensive subs. However like others have mentioned, we could just see Iribarren called up for a short to mid-term fix.
  5. Not an upcoming graduate.... Just thought I'd add that I saw Bud speak a couple years back when he came to campus & spoke at the Hillell house. He was surprisingly engaging. I was expecting it to be as lame as it could be, but honestly Selig really was an interesting speaker. His passion for baseball is just undeniable, however anyone feels about him as commissioner. I'll be interested to hear how he does delivering a speech that won't be exclusively about MLB, however. Might get more of the dried-up Bud Selig with that in mind.
  6. Imho anything to help the umps is great. They're human, and already have an extremely demanding job without being asked to guesstimate calls they may have no real way of seeing. So far I haven't seen one replay delay that came anywhere close to ruining a game or anthing like that. I think the first time a huge HR call comes up in the postseason or pennant race, everyone will be glad replay is available. Players can take HGH and never age and have 20 year long primes, this is better technology than our natural bodies, why dont we just legalize all steroids? I think this exaggerates beyond the point of being a fair comparison to instant replay augmenting the resources of umpiring crews.
  7. We're all jumping the gun a bit here, though. You said the following on 4/15/09, when I posted some pretty reliable info from a well-informed source (Chris Neault, DL Informer blog) -- "I hope we can just get patient instead of panicking about what phantom injury he may or may not have." "I'm saying that people need to quit grasping at straws." Now, Braun himself has identified back stiffness, which matches up with what Neault had to say in April... and you're still going with, 'We're jumping the gun'? Seems like being concerned is a pretty reasonable frame of mind right now. "All these injuries are related," Braun said. "They're all similar, everything I've gone through. Rib cage, back. They are all in the same general area and have the same general feeling." Yeah, sorry, I'm worried about this.
  8. Yeah, Rickie has not only been hitting the ball, but hitting it really hard on a relatively consistent basis. I certainly don't believe his BB skill has vanished, but it does apppear that the direction he's getting from the coaches is to worry less about about being a leadoff hitter & just worry about being a hitter. I'm of the belief that the walks will come, and it's not like Rickie hasn't been working the count & just hacking at the first fastball he sees.
  9. ESPN's bottom line had that tidbit... which made me disappointed that the FSN (in-game) broadcast did not.
  10. But at least they've captured the noble essence of being one of the finest warriors man has ever devised -- you know, vandalizing stuff. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif
  11. jopepsi an acquaintance of mine went through a similar situation & when he told DirecTV he would leave unless they did something for him, they asked him 'what can we do'? He said they should comp. him the Extra Innings package... and they did.
  12. Yeah, me too joepepsi. Nelson at the plate reminds me a bit of Fielder in his rookie season. I think Brad's just pressing right now, and everyone knows that when that happens, the player tends to not even look like himself. Corey Hart's second half of 2008 comes to mind there too. That one big hit is sure to come, and probably will after a couple 'meaningless' singles or so. EDIT: To a certain extent, it actually doesn't help things that Brad is such a talented hitter. That means Macha has been (correctly) employing him as a PH in higher-leverage situations (runners on base, etc.). Of course I'm sure that's just made Nelson press that much more, since he knows he's good at being the run producing slugger, and wants to hit as well at MLB as he did in AAA.
  13. Aside from the delicious Oberon, which is something I very much am looking forward too, any new Spring brews floating around that require my attention? It's funny... I contemplated editing the thread title today to include some kind of question about any summer brews coming out. What a difference a climate makes (Pac. NW for me). http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I think we're going to have a lot of great beers to talk about in the coming months.
  14. I was hoping my 12-10 pick would turn out to be conservative (I feel the same way about my May prediction). All in all, though, that's a great mark against a really tough schedule. The way the Brewers rolled on the Astros & Bucs is really encouraging imo. If you can feast on those types of teams, there's obviously not as much pressure to play over your head against the really tough squads.
  15. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif That's good stuff right there. Can you give a date on the rainout?
  16. I think it's pretty safe to say that Soup's career numbers tell us what to reasonably expect. He made a bad start or two, and they happened to come at the season's beginning. I really don't see anything more than people overreacting due to the timing. He's not great, nor has he ever been. But imo he's a fine back of the rotation option.
  17. Melvin never stands in the way of a veteran to get a big league check I really like that about Melvin. Although he clearly could just horde guys, I think it's really great that he gives guys their shots with other teams when warranted.
  18. That's funny... I was watching on the Texas feed. They were (understandably) just in shock overall on how that game ended. First that HR robbery by Sweeney, then the HR from Holliday. Then, the TEX 9th inning leadoff batter lined out ridiculously hard to OAK's SS Cabrera, who made a leaping stab to rob the hit. Next batter was Young & the double/triple gaffe, and then the Jones HR. Wild.
  19. crazy finish in Arlington. With one out in the bottom of the 9th, Michael Young laser-beamed one off the LF wall that ricocheted back past Holliday, back towards the IF. Like a dope, with his team down 4-1, Young tried to stretch it into a triple. He was (barely) thrown out. The next batter, Andruw Jones, homered to LF. The next batter was retired... ballgame 4-2. I honestly have no idea what Young was doing trying to get to 3B. The ball was right in front of him the whole time, and wasn't very far away from third once Holliday got to it off the ricochet. Anyway, that's all -- just a wild finish.
  20. Ha -- and now Matt Holliday just hit a solo shot in the top of the 9th. Hey Kinsler -- BURN!
  21. Holy crap Ryan Sweeney (OAK) just robbed Ian Kinsler of a 3-R HR in the bottom of the 8th at TEX. Kept the score 3-1 OAK. Wow. Don't worry if you didn't see it live... that one's gonna be all over the highlight shows. Wow. Big shot to straightaway CF, and Sweeney just tracked it perfectly. After the catch, Kinsler spiked his helmet on the ground and said (paraphrasing), 'POOPY PANTS!' Naturally, Sweeney couldn't keep the big grin off his face as he high-fived his corner OF-mates & jogged back to the dugout.
  22. Logan mentioned it from examining the whole contract though, not just 2010. I also disagree with the specifics of your 'we can't pay players what they're worth', but I get the general point so no use quibbling over semantics.
  23. From the Elias Sports Bureau: Gallardo was only the third pitcher in major league history to win a game 1-0 while recording at least 10 strikeouts and hitting a home run. That is simply incredible. Sure, it's basically setting arbitrary thresholds... but still. Pretty amazing performance from Yo, and since I know what hawing is getting at, I'm not going to say any more about it either. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  24. Wow. I'd love to say I'm completely surprised, but I'll just have to go with 'disappointed.' I'll try to remember CenturyTel. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  25. You've gotta take the beanball fight to them... otherwise the terrorists win.
