  1. Irregardless of all of this nonsense, I don't understand why anyone would cheer for the Cardinals in the playoffs. I've never understood the mentality of cheering for one's rivals just because they are from the same division/league. I generally find myself fervently rooting against these teams.
  2. Makes no sense not to match that.
  3. I think Gerut is an OK player. Usually when I say that, people give me a hard time, but he had a great year last year in San Diego. It would be tough to give up on him as a cheap option without giving him an opportunity first.
  4. I'm not trading him unless he could be part of a deal to bring a legitimate pitcher to the team. He's cheap, can hit and play multiple positions. There's good value in that.
  5. I think that it's tough to dispute that Hardy is the second best shortstop the Brewers have ever had besides Yount. Due to his defense, I feel that even this year, Hardy was a huge upgrade to the days of hacks like Jose Valentin (terrible in the field), Jose Hernadez (terrible at the plate and the field) and Royce Clayton (terrible at the plate). The past two years, Hardy was a top 10 MLB shortstop on both offense and defense. That's why I have no idea why the Brewers killed his trade value. I would have left him in the lineup hoping that he went on one of his hot streaks. What was there to lose in doing so? The season was over anyway. I have no problem with Escobar, but it's obivious that he needs time to develop as a major league hitter. Next year he's going to have to hit a little bit, unless the Brewers can get some offense at the catcher position. You can't have three automatic outs at the bottom of the lineup.
  6. I beg to differ with you. Even on the outs, Pittsburgh was hitting Suppan like a slow pitch softball pitcher. He was aided by what, three or four double plays (one was an absolute rocket hit to second and one was a great play by Counsell) and a couple line drive atom balls. Had a couple of things turned just a little bit, he'd have been looking at about 7 or 8 earned runs again. Did he even strike anybody out? Maybe he's still 'hurt'.
  7. I've got to say that Parra is probably the most overrated Brewer in years. Honestly what has the guy done? He had a good first half last year, and since then has been one of the worst pitchers in baseball. Victor Santos had a good first half once too. First of all, Parra is not "young".... he will be 27 next year. He also has a big time injury history. Granted he has good 'stuff' and is left-handed. I don't think that his 'stuff' is any better than DeLaRosa's when he was here. The problem with both of them is they cannot locate that 'stuff'. I don't remember all the backers for DeLaRosa. The Brewers basically gave him away without really giving him an opportunity (on a lesser team) when he was 25.
  8. If Gamel can be flipped for Halliday, you have to do it. Gratned, it's a huge risk/reward situation. McGahee can play third, and Prince is here for two more years. My guess is that you'd have to add some more players as well to get the Jays to bite.
  9. Man, some of you guys are fervent Cameron supporters.. As far as the pitching goes, I think you have to go for Halliday next year. He can be had this offseason. You just have to give to get. I still say probably actually the best option out there is Sheets. Yes, I know he's not coming back, but I want to know why. My guess is that his nose was out of joint being paid less than Suppan, and when the team didn't offer to extend him and went and got Sabathia that must have been the tipping point.
  10. If he's willing to take a pay cut, I'd consider- even though I'm not the biggest fan of his. I'd say the $6 million range sounds about right. No way should he get another $10 million, and I highly doubt if any other team in the league would give him that. Heck, the Yankees even balked at that amount when they backed out of the trade. I think Kendall would be a fine backup catcher for about $1 million a year. Simply put, he cannot be brought back as the starter.
  11. Love the Zevon reference. A true lyrical poet if there ever was one.
  12. Gilkey Did he ever play for the Brewers in Spring Training?
  13. I like all of the deals you proposed, though I'm not sure if the other teams would. I'm starting to get into the camp of trying to sign Prince long term again, but it they could get that from Boston, it would be a haul to say the least. Doubt if they would give that much up though. I'd try to work on Seattle again to see if they want to swap a King for a Prince, but doubt that would happen either. You just can't move Prince unless you are getting big time return though. I wonder if Prince would bite on a 3 year extension in the $75 million range? Suppan will come of the books next year, and that offer would almost match what him and Prince would cost in 2010.
  14. Bernard Gilkey = Former Brewer, no?
  15. As others have said, stay away from MNF and I'm cool with him. He made me long for Dennis Miller.
  16. For the MVP's, I had the unfair advantage of having the 75 topps and the 82 Kmart sets when I was younger. I looked at those cards so much I memorized all the MVP's from 52 to 81. Try the Rookie of the Year ones. Those are tough. The #/1 overall draft pick ones for each sport are fun as well. I probably killed about 2 hours on this last night. Thanks again for posting the link.
  17. Wow, Suppan is only 10 on the list. I'd put him at 5 or 6. I'd do a straight up deal for Jose Guillen (#2) in a heartbeat. I'd probably pass on the rest, because none of them are up next near.
  18. I can see this becoming addictive. Just did the A.L. MVP's. Got 71/78. QUIZ LINK
  19. I got 91. This was fun. Thanks for posting. Edited so as not to give away answers....
  20. Everyone here acts like Hardy was hitting .170 with 2 homers and booting tons of balls in the field. This simply wasn't the case. I'd go further to suggest that even in this down season- factoring in his defense, I'd say he fell somewhere in the middle of the pack of N.L. shortstops. Obviously, everyone was disappointed in his season this year, but he's always been streaky at the plate, he just never got on a good streak this year. He's always seemed to be a solid teammate and has been a solid offensive contributor the past two seasons. He's been bad this year, but not Royce Clayton or Jose Hernandez bad. Again, I view this as a premeditated move with the sole motive of tinkering with his service time. Not sure this is the way you want to treat your employees, especially considering that Hardy seems to be very close with Rickie Weeks among others. This nonsense is just going to give the team a bad rap with players around the league. Just a year ago, everyone wanted to run Weeks out of town as well. Amazing how two hot months changes people's perspectives. Hardy seems to be the new target. There is no way Hardy comes back next year, and his trade value has been diminished big time. Other teams know that the Brewers' hands are forced, so they will get low return when he is traded this offseason. Personally, I give him a lot of credit for reporting back to the team. Under similar circumstances, I would file a grievance with the union and go home for the rest of the year.
  21. I don't care what the stats say, I'll take McCutchen ahead of Cameron right now, even at $10 million. That kid is a player. Back to reality, I think making due with Gerut and Patterson will do for next season. Cameron's money will be needed for pitching. Would Lopez be a complete disaster in center? A Weeks, Lopez, Braun, Fielder lineup sounds pretty good....
  22. This isn't hindsight if you could dig up my posts regarding my feelings about the Suppan and Riske signings immediately after they happened. In particular, I was most critical about these signings because I felt there wouldn't be enough money to resign Sheets. I felt guys like Riske were a dime a dozen and could better be procured off the waiver wire. I also posted that we should look at using Parra in a piece of a trade for a proven starter this past winter, and hammered Melvin for going into the season with him as the number 2. I'm not always right, but saw a lot of this coming. It wouldn't take a genius to know that depending on Suppan and two young guys for your rotation would likely end in disaster.
  23. I've never been sold on Parra, and was completely surprised by his start last season. He's a little old to be a 'prospect', has major injury history, and folded like a tent down the stretch last year. I wanted to dump him in the offseason in the worst way to sell high. I couldn't believe that people honestly felt that he was a legit #2 starter, or #3 for that matter. I will admit that I also wanted to trade Fielder in the offseason, but only if the team getting Fielder took Suppan with him. Who can blame me for that?
  24. Parra should have been traded when his value was at his peak. Despite 'hitting the wall' last year, he could have been a big piece in a deal for an established pitcher (Peavy for example). Now his value is basically zero. He's not getting any younger either... it looks like he may never "get it". Either that, or he'll be given away like DeLaRosa and flourish somewhere else. If Melvin doesn't do something to solidify this staff (not by overpaying mediocrity) in the offseason, he should be fired. You have to give to get. If that means giving up Gamel, you do it. Obviously nothing will probably be done because of 'Soup's' contract. It would be nice if Sheets was an option, but I guess that bridge has been burned for whatever reason (still want to know the real story there). Riske was far from solid last year. He went south mid year and almost single handedly cost the team the playoffs. Another bad signing from Melvin. Hopefully we never see him pitch for the team again. These are exactly the type of contracts that need to be avoided. Do not overpay mediocrity.
  25. I still say this is dirty pool. If I'm Hardy, I file a grievance with the union, and would refuse to report to the team in September. As I said before, his numbers weren't bad enough to warrant a demotion to Nashville when also considering his defense. You just don't see teams sending tenured vets down to the minors like this. The timing of this leads me to believe that this was the plan all along. After seeing this, now I'm beginning to understand why Sheets hates the team. Players talk, and I'm sure many will shy away from the Brewers due to nonsense like this. I'm all for holding players accountable for performance, but it's tough for any team to do that to some guys when they are running Suppan out there every fifth day and Kendall gets 600 plate appearances a year. Not sure how much of these moves are attributable to Attanasio, but I'm starting to waver on Melvin. I'd bet a good chunk of cash that Macha will be gone after this season, Melvin maybe should go as well.
