  1. I disagree. Hoffman has been great this year. Money for starting pitching can come from other sources (Cameron, Kendall, Looper, Hardy, Weathers).
  2. What was this guy getting a lifetime achievement award for? He hasn't made a relevant movie in 35 years. Nobody is above the law, and hopefully he does some hard time now. As for the victim 'wanting this to go away'...... she was paid off. The excuses about his 'personal hardships' also fall upon deaf ears for me.
  3. The thing that irks me is that Melvin didn't do more to get Peavy. He would have been perfect. You can say that he had a no trade clause and wouldn't have came to Milwaukee, but two of his former teammates in Hoffman and Cameron are here and seem to like it a lot. Both those guys are considered 'elder statesmen' of the game and likely they could have had some pull with Peavy. Going further, people say that SD wanted young pitching that we didn't have. Melvin could have worked around that as well with a three way trade or something. You can't tell me that we couldn't have gotten some young pitching for Gamel, Hardy, etc. You have to be creative.... My guess is that Peavy was on Melvin's radar for this offseason and the White Sox swept in and stole his thunder, which really sucks because he was by far the best option out there.
  4. By many accounts, Guthrie's velocity has been down this year. Plus he will be thirty one years old next year, meaning he's probably already peaked. His strikeout levels have been dropping each year. It's doubtful he's going to get any better, so why does anybody think that he could be a 2-3 pitcher on a good team? The fact that he's the 'ace' of the Orioles staff is pretty much meaningless. I think Suppan was the 'ace' of the Royals staff at one point.
  5. I want no part of another soft-tossing "innings eater". If Hardy must be traded, he needs to be packaged with something to bring a solid pitcher or he should be traded for pitching prospects with some upside. Trading him for Guthrie reeks of Burnitz for Glendon Rusch to me.
  6. Harden is very tempting to me. If he wasn't a walking injury risk, he would be a legitimate 1A to Gallardo. The problem is, the Brewers give him a four year contract and end up getting 50 starts out of him. If healthy, he is probably worth the $15 million/year. I wonder what kind of contract he will demand.
  7. The reason I posted this is that Ken Rosenthal wrote that the Astros might be ready to move Oswalt. Not sure if he's just pulling things out of his rear, or if he's actually heard rumblings though.
  8. I wouldn't call last season a good season. A good first half maybe, but he pitched just as he did this year in the second half. I'm not sold on him as anything more than a bottom of the rotation type pitcher.
  9. What does everyone here think about rolling the dice on a trade for Oswalt? His past success speaks for itself. That said, his performance this year has slipped a little bit and he has a disk problem in his back. I believe that he's owed about $30 million over the next two seasons....would he be worth the risk if the Astros were willing to talk about him? Personally, I'd look into it depending on his medical report. He seems old, but he's younger than Washburn (by 3 years) and Halladay.... would be cheaper as well. Plus I believe that he's good friends with Sheets. Maybe he could convince Ben to come back as well....
  10. Agreed. I feel that Parra is highly overrated here. He throws hard and is left handed. What else has he shown? Granted, he had a couple of good months last year, but my guess is that those were likely smoke and mirrors. Parra would be a great 5 starter, but he can't be counted on to be a 2 or 3.
  11. I've felt all along that Macha and Melvin are a package deal for 2010. If Mark A. gets a little antsy, or if someone like LaRussa becomes available, I don't doubt for a minute that he will mandate a move to Melvin. My guess is that at that point, Melvin would probably leave to pursue other opportunities as well...... I don't think that he'd do another Yosting.
  12. As much as I'd like to move Suppan, I'd have to say no. Bradley is owed $20 million, so unless the Cubs want to eat contract I wouldn't bite. If Hall was still around and/or Riske wasn't hurt, something could maybe have been worked out.
  13. I've been laughed at when I bring this up to my 'casual fan' friends, most recently at my fantasy football draft. That said, my opinion is simple.... Gerut + $6-8 Million > Cameron Going further (Gerut + $12-14 Million) > (Cameron + Looper) (Gerut + $12-14 Million) = Decent Starting Pitcher Simply put, keeping Gerut instead of Cameron and letting Looper walk would give the team the financial flexibility to acquire a pitcher such as Halladay through a trade. Drop Kendall, and there is another $4 million or so.
  14. If we are talking $7 million, and Sheets is ready for spring training, I'd much rather take my chances with him than bring Looper back at about the same cost.
  15. No way would ATL trade Vazquez for McGahee. They have a similar player in Prado.
  16. That's a good point. I think a lot of the 'bad eggs' come to Miller Park because of it's location/affordability. I would also bet that some of the rube Cub fans stirring up trouble at Miller Park are from Wisconsin.
  17. I don't know.... Felix, Haren, Kershaw, Cain (maybe) would probably be about it. Greinke probably wouldn't happen. Probably none of these would. I'm not trading Prince for David Price one on one that's for sure. The only time I'm trading Prince for 'upside' is the trading deadline in 2011 if he refuses a contract extension. Otherwise, you have to give to get. I'd be interested in Halladay as well, but would do something with hitters/prospects for him. Perhaps centered around Lawrie and Hardy for example.
  18. I think Byrd is a decent option, but center fielders tend to be overpriced in the free agent market. If he would come relatively affordable, I think he's worth a look. I know I'm in the minority here, but I still think that Gerut is a viable option as well. He is arbitration eligible, correct/
  19. If this team is trading Prince, it had better be for a guy who can be a 1 or 1a to Gallardo in the rotation. Upside is not good enough (unless it comes with a good MLB proven bat). It is tough for any team to win in the playoffs, or even make the playoffs for that matter without at least 2 stoppers in the rotation. If no one is willing to part with these guys in a trade, you have to stand pat. Though I don't think he's that good, Guthrie for Hardy would be fine with me given Hardy's diminished trade value. That said, he is at best a 3/4 starter on a good team. He'd be a minor upgrade to Parra, Suppan or Looper. Not sure of his contract situation, but if he's cheaper than Looper would be last year I would be fine with it I guess. I'd rather see a guy like Hudson come in as a #3, but with that a lot of things will have to fall in place, and the Brewer's luck is that they generally don't. I still say that the team should do everything in it's power to kiss and make up with Sheets. He'd likely come on a short term deal for a decent price. He has to have some friends/backers on the team and the front office, doesn't he?
  20. I agree, I've never understood why so many seem to target him here.
  21. By all accounts a solid human being. He put up one heck of a fight.
  22. I'll take Chris Duncan on the roster if he comes with LaRussa and his dad. He can't be any worse than Chris Duffy...
  23. I think Macha is one and done. Rightly or wrongly, it is a cheap window dressing type move that will help placate a good deal of the fanbase. Why bring back a lame duck next season? He's really shown me nothing this year, and actually reminds me a lot of Davey Lopes. I think that there is a decent chance Melvin could be gone as well. Not sure who Attanasio could hire that would make a splash. The point is that I don't think that anybody figured this team would struggle to get 75 wins this year. Based on Attanasio's history, heads are going to roll.
  24. My gut tells me that Macha will be gone the day after the season ends. Attanasio has never been shy about making bold moves. This will make a good splash for the fanbase. I wouldn't be surprised if all this could lead to Melvin leaving as well if he disagrees with the decision. In any case, I've said before that Ben is the best off-season option for the Brewers. I'm not sure why the fans turned on him so quickly, but it seems a lot of people forget that he was the All-Star starter just last year. I would like to know the true story of what happened, my guess is that it had something to do with Suppan making more money than him. Who can blame him? My worst fear is that Sheets will be Molitor version 2. That is, injury plagued with the Brewers, and never hurt again once he leaves.
