  1. there's nowhere to go but up........i suppose.
  2. i feel that the current structure mostly benefits the extreme elite players in baseball like Lee and Crawford. if any change were to happen, i'd like to see teams not quite being able to offer Lee $25M, and more money going to the mediocre players of the League, who represent the vast majority of players in the Union. i think overall, if an elite player gets less for five scrubs to get more, that's an overall win for the Union. i DO think young players deserve a lot more than $350,000. NBA and NFL players make that, but they make it straight out of college. most baseball players play years making a pittance in the minor leagues never to see a ML contract. for the success rate and the time it takes to get there, they deserve a lot more than what they get.
  3. in a way i can understand the Nationals wanting to overpay and secure Werth. they've come in 2nd place for so many big FAs and then thy lose their phenom for a year, so they must have been anxious to make something happen and not come in 2nd place yet again.
  4. absolutely! for Weeks' skillset, i've long been anxious to see what he can do slotted at the #3 or 5/6, where i think he fits even better. i've always been a big Weeks fan and hope he's with the Brewers for a very long time.
  5. define 'superior' and 'inferior' player, though. a team could save up money to spend extra on a superstar but still wind up with Soriano or Pavano. maybe the players have the power, but the owners haven't exactly banded together to try and do anything about it. the current system is perfect for most of them, too. either you can spend money and compete or field a garbage team and collect $20M in revenue sharing. if you threw me $20M per year i could care less if people complained that my team wasn't competitive. and now, the Yankees (and their type) will win the WS, but Selig still gets to say "see, the Devil Rays made it, so every small-spender can do the same!" nothing is going to change until a problem reaches the level of extreme, but with revenue sharing (or MLB loaning you money) no owner has to lose money long-term. so why change the system? this is why i'm rooting for the Yankees to win 10 World Series' in a row (provided the Brewers don't get there). then the fans and even the players will finally get fed up of playing in a corrupt system and demand some changes. what's sad is that if any change in the system were to be made, the bottom-level players would most likely all get a big bump in pay. for all they have to deal with, just making one season of the Major Leagues deserves a heck of a lot more money than $350,000.
  6. it just occurred to me that not a single soul on bf.net has wanted the Brewers to sign Manny this year. finally it ends!
  7. if the Brewers had to compete in the AL East i'd be a bigger hockey fan. this is a joke. boston has a couple sub-awesome seasons and so they casually sign two superstars with all their money. go figure if the yankees ever missed the playoffs they'd just sign every all-star FA on the market and trade for a few more for good measure. like the old Gypsy curse goes, may the Yankees and Red Sox have everything they desire.
  8. yesterday was my first full day off in three weeks, and my back went out. spent most of the day lying on the floor.
  9. a good friend in North Carolina has a contact who might might might be able to put a good word in for me provided there's a position open, so crossing my fingers. the rough thing about possibly moving back to North Carolina is that my friend here in Austin has been really excited to have me come down, and now after three months here i'm looking at moving away. he's outta Austin in two years as it is, so i guess it's not too bad.
  10. three months in Austin now and i'm starting to miss North Carolina. not much greenery in Austin, i miss access to the Appalachians and a couple good friends there. i've also been applying for recreation jobs in middle-of-nowhere Texas, so that isn't a thrilling prospect, either. gonna ply a contact there to see if they might have even 10 hours of recreation-related work for me there, and i'll fill in the rest with something else. North Carolina recreation-specific economy is horrible right now, but even 10 hours in the field is work experience even if i have to wait a year for something career-type.
  11. this is the first time in my career having to deal with a coworker i really dislike and who doesn't like me. he's 18 years old and quite bright, but also the type of smart guy who picks out the dumb guy in the group to subtly insult. i've ignored the handful of comments so far because i don't really care what a high-schooler thinks of me (i'm also new to the job and not catching on to their computer system very well), and also don't want to ignite anything, but dislike not sticking up for myself. today, when he ended our short conversation with a snide "Well, I guess I'm just smarter than you," i made the mistake of not saying anything but should have said how i don't appreciate comments like that.
  12. lets trade Prince to Toronto for that Brent Lawrie guy the Jays have in their system:)
  13. it seems like it's not so much that the other team has the type of players that we want, but more that the other team would want Prince in the first place. no reason to trade for one year of Prince unless you have serious intentions of resigning him for 2012. i don't really know, but are the Blue Jays in a position to add significant payroll?
  14. one of May Gamel's friends is Michael Garciaparra. seems fitting.
  15. maybe we're hypothetically offering up too much. if he doesn't really want to go to a large-market team and maybe had a lot of them on his NTC list, then maybe there really isn't a ton of other teams bidding for him. of course Greinke is a little different, but if nobody seems to want Fielder, maybe few teams want to trade stud prospects for Greinke.
  16. i'm not complaining, but i have to work every day between now and New Years. when i was younger, i could pull 90-hour workweeks and have energy to spare, but i guess that ability goes away once you reach about 30. now i'm back to scrubbing grease off of pans and working hourly as a 33-year-old, doing the work a 16-year-old should be doing. i'm so anxious to settle down and not move anymore, and i'm applying for jobs that not only would have me moving, but i'd also have to move two years afterward, too. ugh.
  17. maybe 3yr/$40MM to a delusional owner if the Yankees told Jeter to go shopping and i was the Red Sox, i think i'd make a ridiculous offer just out of spite. Jeter signing with Boston would be worth any amount of money.
  18. isn't that Enrico Palazzo?
  19. i'm loving the back-and-forth with this. what are the yankees going to say, "$25M is too expensive"??
  20. dang, now i want some Stadium Sauce, too. miss that stuff.
  21. so one of my jobs is at Wal-Mart, and it intrigues me that after six months there, i'd be able to transfer to any Wal-Mart anywhere. maybe if this Austin, Texas thing doesn't work out, it'll be time for the Virgin Islands or some crazy place like that. not that it'd be enough to live on right away, but it'd be a big head start.
  22. i definitely miss all the Wisconsin cheese. i had the same problem as you once, Jim. i hadn't realized cheese spread was disallowed on planes. the beer isn't a necessity, is it? i think there's something fun about discovering the good local breweries in a new town. summer sausage and quality Racine kringel. and venison steaks. i've found that the more i'm away from Wisconsin, the more i want sports merchandise like Brewers hats, Badger sweatshirts and the like. it's a bonus when you go to the bar when a big Badgers or Packers game is on tv, and by wearing the colours you end up meeting other people from Wisconsin. and pick up a Badgers bumper sticker or "W" for your rear window.
  23. i remember a quote somewhere from Hoffman saying that he'd most likely retire if he couldn't find a deal where he had a chance to close some games. i didn't take it to mean that he had to be a closer right away, but at least a chance. so i can see the handshake deal since Hoffman wouldn't even be third on our closer depth chart. wanted to double-check, and mlbtraderumors says he's a Type B. you'd have to think that San Diego would want to let him retire in a Padres uniform on a cheap deal.
