  1. my definition of a non-superstar: someone, if he were a FA, who would still not be pursued by the Yankees. it's not meant solely as Yankee bashing. i think it makes sense. old: Greg Brock (he hit a HR almost right at me when i was a kid) and Glen Bragg (saw him break a bat around his back on a missed swing. coolest thing ever. I also rooted for Jeffrey Hammonds since everyone else hated him and he routinely won the team Humanitarian award. and Nick Neguebauer(sp). Dave Nilsson and Charlie O'Brien. now: Zumaya and Fernando Rodney. obviously Branyan. Jamie Moyer and Tim Wakefield. of course Brad Nelson (if minor-leaguers count). Kerry Wood and Mark Prior (I have a soft spot for would-have-been HOFers)
  2. Boras set up the scouting-director thing that way so that he would then easily be able to yell "collusion!" and have that player also declared a free agent. sneaky.
  3. we've all been in those situations where we want to avoid the painful-but-obvious solution to a problem. but right before submitting we throw out alternatives as fast as we possibly can, whether they're crazy or not. the recent propensity realignment and draft ideas seem to me to be a desperate flailing to avoid the obvious answer of revenue sharing. the only thing sticking to Major League Baseball is that tiny little sliver of a hope that all things magical will come together and the Brewers have some small shot at winning a World Series. a significant change like this would crush that slim hope and I'd probably never watch baseball again. i'll root for the underdog, but not when there's zero chance. why not no draft at all, then? everyone just becomes a FA at 18 American years of age (15 Dominican).
  4. i knew eventually i'd have to come see what this thread was all about. too bad i missed the gross picture because the current one is really tame. from that it's debatable that you'd lose the nail at all, but i'm presuming the grosser picture eliminates that doubt. i've had blood underneath nails before and didn't lose the nail. i'm a long-distance hiker, so i've lost a few toenails before. and i've heard that runners have it even worse for losing nails. ot, but i have a nail that's permanently dented after i slammed it in a door once.
  5. awesome, i've crossed something off my list. next up, i'm gonna go and get a cavity!
  6. i've never eaten lobster never had a cavity i've never been to a rock concert (not counting bars) i've never caught anything bigger than a sunfish i've never been to Chuck E Cheese i've never been to Lambeau Field (shame on me) never been on a Valentines date never ordered food to be delivered possibly wrong, but i don't think i've ever posted on an in-game thread i've never read a comic book
  7. well, as it is now, i think i'm 75% on Boise. It'd be too expensive for me to spend a month in both places before I decided, but I could very well move to Austin if I can't find work in Boise after four months or so. The Green Acres clip actually helps as a somewhat-exaggerated version of something I'd been thinking about. I didn't really go downtown when I lived in Denver, and I'm rarely seen in downtown Greensboro now. I've read downtown Boise has a lot beyond the typical bar, and it's that mid-sized city that I slightly favour. I sometimes forget that I'm not big on huge crowds, which probably minimizes Austin's benefits. Austin's superior single-people percentage is attractive to me, but maybe I shouldn't weigh that as heavily as I have been. Not that I want to move to a place similar to Winston-Salem (horrible if you're a single person), but Boise should have more like-minded people (outdoors-wise) and it's not exactly bereft of single people (though 33 is too old for the college crowd). So maybe quality over quantity would be the better way to go. although all said and done, i'd love an excuse to move back to Greensboro, but she hasn't returned that phone call;)
  8. there's no more satisfying way to itch your legs than with a good, pointy car key.
  9. admittedly, the singles' scene is a strong variable in my decision. Austin is apparently awesome in general and Boise has more an outdoors crowd, which is more my thing. and Invader is right, LDS girls aren't my type. although Google shows a decent number of churches in Boise that are of my ilk. I'm leaning 60% Boise right now, but I've got some time yet. I won't have a ton of money when I leave, but maybe I'll still do my best to take the very long way to Boise by way of Austin, and at least go for a visit.
  10. Thanks everyone for the help. I'll actually be able to move anywhere, but I'm thinking one of these two places just because I'll have friend/s there. I've discovered it makes a big difference whether you enter a place with connections or not. As such, I may also have to consider this in terms of 'Which friend/s would I rather hang out with?' hmmmmmm, Austin's single's age-range and population is far better, yet Boise should have more like-minded people. eh, I could probably think of a counter-argument for everything. Well, I've got time yet to think about it. and heck, maybe if i don't find work within three months in one place, then just move to the other.
  11. I will be getting my Masters degree in May and have no real reason to stay in the Greensboro area. I have friends in/moving to Austin, TX and Boise, ID. I was curious if anyone here has lived or been there, and what your thoughts are. The singles' scene is important to me, and I've heard Austin has a lot of people in their mid-20s. Not to mention I never liked the Wisconsin winters and want a warmer place. And of course who doesn't like live music? Boise certainly has a lot to offer for the outdoors, and I am big into hiking and flat-water kayaking. I don't know a lot else about it, though.
  12. whether he wins or not, this will put an end to t-shirt bazookas and possibly even throwing peanuts at baseball games. there's nothing stopping the next person from suing for $1M.
  13. How I Met Your Mother--my favourite show and so easy to identify with the main character (he's my age and my situation). it of course has the obligatory girl-chasing character (extra funny that he's gay in real life), but i appreciate that he's more the antagonist than the protagonist. Psych--a nice, mindless-but-entertaining show House--they've been doing a great job of creating interesting characters for the patients that come through Sunny In Philadelphia--a great show, but i can't remember the last time they had a new episode NBC Thursdays Family Guy--although this season has been so dreadful that it's fallen into the realm of "I'll watch it only if I'm bored." Kitchen Nightmares--really enjoy seeing the way Ramsey can so-quickly identify the problems in a restaurant and know just how it can succeed. also like Hell's Kitchen (I thru-hiked with last year's winner).
  14. so do you think these are important questions about beef sticks? i would think the less you know about beef sticks, the better.
  15. i don't follow the NBA like you guys do, but I like the GM side of sports--so are the Bucks making these moves and trading expiring contracts so that they can better-secure a low-round playoff spot or are there some long-term plans going on here?
  16. definitely the "just eat less" advice is mostly worthless, since that just leaves you hungry and you end up snacking on crap foods. although it's amazing what drinking a glass of water before a meal and switching out a portion of meat for a vegetable will do for you. even dropping 200 calories from your diet won't show up much in the sort-term, but over the long haul it will make a world of difference.
  17. it's like they shook the Etch-a-sketch and the whole thing is back to where it was two years ago. Michael is the boss, Jim can pull pranks on Dwight, and a salesman and the secretary like each other.
  18. i just put mine in the top rack of a dishwasher.
  19. just reading that made me feel good.
  20. they're predicting 4" of snow tonight and up to 10" of snow tomorrow in central NC right now. i'm gonna go ahead and take the under on that one.
  21. chicks who break up with you through the strategy of suddenly ignoring your messages and hoping you quietly disappear. have a little courtesy and find some courage--that's a cowardly way to do it.
  22. maybe they should just run old Carson shows and then everybody could be happy!
  23. i'm a big fan of Bush and also think the non-tender talk is going too far. right now, he's just what you'd want in a 4/5 pitcher. he'll have his share of bad outings, but i see him as a .500 pitcher. and my impression of the games he loses is that it's usually due to one disastrous inning where he loses focus. in that respect, i think there's a lot of potential that if he could fix that problem he'd be a solid #3 guy. come to think of it, didn't we pay Suppan $12M per season in the hopes that he would put up numbers that are only slightly better than what Bush is doing right now?
  24. Irribarren leaving doesn't bother me at all, and I like this signing so we can hopefully keep Heether in the minors until we figure out what we think of Gamel first. I'll be rooting for Reed Johnson, too.
  25. being a great clubhouse guy (from all accounts) must help, too. i don't think this is too bad of a signing, at all. if he gets injured you're only on the hook for a one-year contract. on the off chance he has a healthy season he either gets you to the playoffs or they flip him like they did Holiday. i like the idea of signing high-risk/high-reward players because of the talent you can get in a late-season trade if they stay healthy. i remember Kansas City tried this once with people like Reggie Sanders, except their mistake was signing them to multi-year deals.
