  1. adding Gomez and Escobar also means that Weeks should be able to hit lower in the order, where i think he's a more-natural fit instead of leadoff. i think he really can sustain the numbers he was having last year, although long ago i stopped expecting he'd play a full season. although i do wonder if Weeks will still hit leadoff just because of Gomez' bad OBP. plus with some speed on the bases ahead of Fielder, he'll see a few more fastballs and could have an even-better offensive season. i like the addition of Wolf because he's just what the rotation needs, a consistently ok pitcher that can improve our overall rotation to middle-of-the-pack. and a healthy Dave Bush i think is going to help quite a bit in that regard, too.
  2. "I have to disagree with GAME about Milton and Shakespeare though" i meant those were about the only English writers i did like. I have an English undergraduate degree, too. tried English teaching but that didn't take; tried editorial work but that didn't pay. i don't think there's anything snobbish at all about liking Faulkner or the other greats of literature.
  3. ...and yet And That still makes time to check out bf.net. nice.
  4. second date. yay!
  5. definitely just a style thing, TLB. a lot of talented writing, just never took for me. i really liked the American Romantics, but that's another one that's either love or hate. although i definitely enjoy most British poets.
  6. happy to hear someone else doesn't particularly enjoy Dickens. so many English lit courses in college and i never really dug too many authors--Swift (though i guess he was Irish, really), Milton and Shakespeare were about it. so dry, and their use of irony never really grabbed me. spent a couple hours loading my "have read's" onto Shelfari. you can find me at Jason Penshorn. if anyone has any recommendations for non-fiction adventure books, i'd be all ears. i'm headed to the Yukon River in June, so something in that area would be great, too.
  7. even though i slipped Tropic of Cancer in there, for the longest time i've read nothing but true-adventure books. one of the last ones that i read and recommend is A Voyage For Madmen, about a race to be the first to circumnavigate the globe in a sailboat.
  8. the bartenders haven't been pretending to like me as much lately. i may have to find a new bar.
  9. it may be acceptable for pots to call kettles black.
  10. not uglier than Otis Nixon. one heck of a ballplayer but a man whose own kids would be afraid of.
  11. on a pile of money. just the other day i was thinking about how i've suddenly become interested in the NBA again. This game was the first NBA game I've watched in its entirety since the 2001 semifinals against the 76ers. Toward the end of the 4th I was remembering again why it's hard to watch the NBA. Being Brewers fans, we're already used to rooting for a team that is always the underdog based on economics. The Bucks are the same in other ways, but made so much worse when we also have to overcome obvious bias and essentially altering the rules to help us lose.
  12. some sorta framed picture always works, maybe of you, the Misses and an ultrasound picture. or take them out to dinner.
  13. nobody replies to my Facebook posts.
  14. exactly. there's three types of girls: "hot," "cute," and "other." i just personally prefer cute. Erin wins.
  15. if the NBA wanted the Bucks to succeed and stay in Milwaukee, it could just "randomly" have them win the first pick in the draft.
  16. hotter than Pam by a mile. though i'd go with "cute" over "hot", and cute is fairly subjective.
  17. maybe, but that's sure not saying much. the show now is just a soap opera with a couple of funny lines. pretty sure the only relationship storylines they have yet to plunder is Creed hooking up with Oscar. maybe the Jim/Pam wedding will be this show's Jump the Shark moment. it's sad that Andy is now the funniest person on that show. and everything i used to like about Jim is now gone.
  18. i guess i view the Bucks a lot like the Brewers in the late County Stadium years. the Kohl Center alone isn't enough to draw people to a game, and the team has been so bad for so long that a lot of potential and former basketball fans are still in hibernation, waiting for an exciting and playoff-caliber team to show up before they return. heck, me just posting on this forum is an example of that. seems like half the hype that Jennings is getting isn't so much for him specifically, but that maybe he might make this an interesting team to watch again. i think the same "but where would they move?" sentiment was made when the Expos were looking for a new city. if the NBA needed a new location, they'd find one.
  19. i think of a Rickey Henderson or a Jackie Robinson who'd get on base and then get in the head of the starting pitcher, who then had to focus some on a throw to first or making sure his mechanics changed for a quicker motion. maybe most important is that the pitch selection has to change to more fastballs. i disagree with Macha's Moneyball philosophy for those reasons, which of course aren't quantifiable. i think having a Gomez and Weeks stealing bases ahead of Fielder will help Prince see more fastballs (being a fastball hitter and all).
  20. This explains why my grumpy, anti-social self is where he is.don't get me wrong, it's exhausting. if i get three hours of sleep i'm still there the next day as chipper as ever, only faking it. reasonable, though, that a full-time employee (i.e. a person with value) having a bad day should be able to phone it in here and there.
  21. there's probably a big motivation to keep that team together as much as possible. even if it means not taking an upgrade with somebody else, it's going with what's worked and not risking a degradation of team chemistry.
  22. to play devil's advocate, even if Ueck is technically just encouraging the ball with his "get up, get up," it's still the start of his well-known HR call. we've grown up expecting him to continue that call with the announcement of a home run. Still, Uecker is that guy you feel like you'd really want to sit next to during a ballgame. Chip Caray is the annoying guy sitting behind you.
  23. Wisconsin is an at-will state, so you don't legally need a good reason to fire somebody. wow. could your coworker temporarily insist on a handwritten sign in/out sheet in addition to the usual system? you wouldn't have to go through policy change of the timekeeping system and maybe this person wouldn't have as much room to lie with other people honestly signing out after her. confrontation is tough and generally useless if you don't have solid evidence, because they'll know enough to just deny everything and there's nothing you can do about it. and hard to say "we'll watch you all closer" because there'd be no visible evidence of the change for people to actually believe it. plus any personal confrontation will automatically come across as accusation and then you get to deal with the subordinate thinking everyone dislikes them and they become jerks to the patrons and stop working hard at the job.
  24. [off-topic] my knowledge of the industry is a pinhead to yours, but i worked for an energy-information publisher for a while and it was the most interesting job i've ever had. I got to work during the whole deregulation scam, too. very fun. [back again] if you need good contacts to get into the capitol, then four years is a lot of time to make them. i got my unrelated internship by walking up to a dude and saying "Hi. My name is J and I'd like to help you out this Fall." it's amazing how much you can get from just walking up to someone and asking for it. just word it to how they can be helped out by you and not the other way around. you'd be amazed at how many contacts you can make by just being there and getting people coffee. it sounds cliche, but smile, be genuinely happy and do a good job on even the simplest of tasks and you'll make a million friends.
  25. i don't mind Buck and McCarver too much at all. i can certainly see why the knowledgeable baseball fan wouldn't like them for their obviousness, but i like them for national broadcasts because they're not exactly over the head of people who don't watch baseball much. but hooray for Chip Caray, by far the worst baseball announcer i've ever heard in my life.
