  1. i thought his agent said he'd sign for the minimum. if it were just about the money, some team would have eventually given in, because some team always does. i actually think he'd be generally bearable on any team. he was a jerk when he had all the power, when he was the hero. now he's a dog without even a bark. he knows that if he were signed, if he even made a peep he'd be off the team in a heartbeat.
  2. chicks secretly like socks and sandals, though you need that cocky/proud attitude when you get called on it. hiking socks work best, though, because white-cotton or black socks just look stupid.
  3. I know one of our prominent members here lives in Singapore, and I had a good time my 4 or 5 days there. it was for work, so i didn't have time to really tour the country, but then i did get to talk to a lot of bigwig government people, so I got to learn a ton of stuff about government policies and infrastructure development. Thunder Bay in Canada was pretty cool; took a tourist train through the woods to some waterfalls.
  4. it was maybe three years ago, but i remember a radio interview with the GM of the Raptors (or was it the Blue Jays?). either way, it felt like he could have been talking about Milwaukee. he understood what living in Toronto was like and so didn't ever really go after FAs who were single or who liked to party and so on. The players he typically courted were the married ones, the ones who wanted a safer city, a diverse city, and he'd spend a lot of time talking to the player about what a great place it would be for his wife and kids to live in. If I had kids, I'd much rather have them in a place like Milwaukee or Salt Lake City than Miami or LA.
  5. A lot of people on here run their own websites or have blogs and such, so what are they? http://www.trailjournals.com/penshorn This is my online trail journal from 2005 when I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail. It has pictures and is appropriate for kids to read. http://www.professionaltravelguide.com I don't run it, but work for it. But since we get a good amount of travel-related threads, this is a free site that offers destination information from cities and countries around the world. Maybe next season I'll create some calendar entries for brewerfan.net softball.
  6. I second that as being the worst. Nothing is even close. i was half-surprised that we'd have even one person on this board who'd have the job to know that smell. go figure there's a second person on here.
  7. some people won't date a smoker--I won't date a fan of the Eagles (the band).
  8. Krakow, Poland was really awesome--get the Ococim beer. rural Hungary I liked, sunshine and fields and fields of sunflowers. for natural beauty, the 42-mile hike through the Presidential range in the White Mountains of NH can't be beat.
  9. I'd have to say an AT thru-hiker has the nastiest smell--we're talking BO of the highest order. I wore the same clothes every single day for six straight months. The clothes got laundered every other week, but it did nothing. And it wasn't just armpit sweat, as hiking in the heat daily, I would sweat buckets--I would ring out my shirt at the end of the day. And there were times I'd go two weeks without a shower. What's odd about it is that thru-hikers themselves rarely notice another hiker's smell, but townfolk certainly do. I remember eight of us walking into a restaurant (this was after a shower and laundry), and high schoolers on the other side of the restuarant were gagging from our smell. The nastiest guy I heard about was someone who vowed not to take a shower until he got to Connecticut (the Trail starts in Georgia, about 1,400 miles back). He got to Erwin, TN (about 400 miles in) and even other thru-hikers wouldn't be around him. Despite washings, the cot he slept on had to be thrown away from the odor.
  10. GAME05--I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2005, so my name is the typical acronym for northbounders, Georgia to Maine in 2005. any other hikers out there?
  11. SeriesFinale, I just want to say it took a lot of guts to be the first poster on this thread. I didn't have the courage. Well done.
  12. i'm changing my vote to Larisa Oleynik, of 3rd Rock From the Sun and 10 Things I Hate About You fame, or kinda-fame, or she was in a movie once.
  13. was that the blind blues guitarist who went on to study throat singing? ok, gotta go look up his name.... edit: Paul Pena, the Tuvalan throat singer????? (good documentary)
  14. i don't read absolutely everything TH writes, but it seems like he's been quickly falling off the hill as far as unbias journalist and onto the side of overly-emotional fan. if he used more than the stats he gleamed from wire articles, that'd sure be a big help.
  15. to me, it just seems impossible to have things both ways, to want BF to grow, but also get only thoughtful, well-reasoned posts. I completely agree with what Russ said, but he's still talking about reason, logic and insightfulness, and that's generally run contrary to what the internet is all about. I also don't really think the Vent Thread et. al really solves anything. it's not like people have a quotient of one-liners to use up and then get back to thought-out posts on the other threads. People are what they are--one-line posters or not (generally speaking). it's not a suggestion, but i'm almost wondering if this issue was blown up beyond what it is now (do you all see this as a minor problem or a major one going forward?), that we might end up having an invitation-only thread/s for exemplary posters, or even further than that, a separate, exclusive website. but that's just me not seeing an easy solution to the current matter--i can't think if i've ever read the rules and regulations of this site all that closely, but i just try not to use cuss words or insult people as a matter of course.
  16. i'm totally fine with the "over-moderation" of the board. the biggest value to bf.net is its insiteful posters, and to be completely accepting of thoughtless comments dilutes what made the product good in the first place. it'll mean people get angry and whine, but it's not like we absolutely have to be a democracy here. I don't know if we still have this feature or not, but I remember there used to be a character minimum for every post (usually something like 6 or 7). If the biggest quibble is the short post, could we do something like make the character minimum 50? I don't know how limited you are with what Yuku has available.
  17. See my loafers? Made of gophers.....
  18. I read a different article on the same thing. it said that in 1980 they estimated 100,000 gorillas, but the new count suggested 125,000, which says that the conservation efforts in the Congo are working. Also that this remote swamp is just one area where they had counted, not that they all lived there. of course, you found that on CNN, which says everything. i can only imagine what the newsroom is like. "well, we loop an hour of news on TV, and we've got our usual 50 minutes devoted to celebrity gossip. How do we fill the rest?" "boss, i've got a gorilla story i'm working on. I just have to check the facts yet." "that's ratings gold! nevermind the facts, we have TV time to fill. Get me video of baby gorillas doing something cute!"
  19. not married, but i'd only imagine that's the best course of action in any situation. nobody would marry the Chiquita Banana lady?
  20. except you forgot she is evil. maybe that's what would keep the relationship so interesting and exciting. One minute she's being uber-perky and making you a sandwich "just because," but in the back of your head, you still wonder if there's that small small chance she just might smother you with a pillow while you're sleeping.
  21. i'm not ready to jump on Fielder yet. i would just assume Parra said something about his defense. Fielder hears about working on it all the time in practice, hears it in the stands and reads about it in the paper. of all the people the man needs to support him it's his teammates, and if Parra did say something about it, maybe pushing him is a legitimate reaction. (ok, having to be restrained is a bit much, though). no doubt that sort of thing had to be building up. No doubt Fielder seems himself as the offensive leader of the team, and we've been losing a lot, so the pressure and the comments had to be building up a lot. i'd probably react the same way if that's what happened. would you be more impressed by him if he said "yeah, Manny, I stink" and then sulked?
  22. any of John Force's daughters would be pretty awesome, plus it'd be interesting that I'd do the cooking and she would get the garage.
  23. plus Natalie Portman went to Yale, which is a big plus.
  24. Amy Davidson from that 8 Simple Rules Show with John Ritter. Kirstin Dunst is up there, but seems to be a partier. maybe Christina Applegate. since we're just fantisizing here, i'll take all three.
  25. my one real fear if we throw Gamel to 1st base is the message it sends not only to other teams, but to Fielder. other teams know we're ready to trade him like the Overbay situation, plus Fielder will no-doubt know he's gone--at least now it's still up in the air. and if it's really just Gamel's throwing and not necessarily his fielding, you'd think he'd be able to make a pretty quick transition to 1st base.
