  1. so for those keyboard-guitar things, what does your left hand control?
  2. Atleast it's not Rats. My father hates rats. i'll take a seething pile of rats and snakes over roaches any day. the baby rattlesnake i encountered i lifted up with a stick to see if it would move more, thinking "oh, i'm sure it's fangs haven't grown in yet" only to find out later that baby rattlers are actually more dangerous than the adults. i guess their venom is a more lethal mix/concentration/? than the adults, plus they don't let go and stop injecting like the adults do. glad it was cold out that the snake didn't care much that i apparently sat on it.
  3. Are there any guitar riffs that don't have their beginnings in Blind Willie Johnson or Son House or Charley Patton or Robert Johnson or Tommy Johnson or Skip James? And didn't those guys get those from traveling musicians, who probably got them from even earlier musicians and so on? Any basic drum beat has probably been around for thousands of years. i can't speak for the chords, but i know the lyrical progression came from "callers," slaves working in the fields who'd lead everyone else in singing. Callers were more valuable at auction for that skill. That blues song at the end of The Jerk is a good example. thanks for that post. despite being busy at work, that was a full hour of digging into that subject. really cool.
  4. i'd imagine a number of people on here have also walked up upon a rattler before. i've encountered maybe a dozen and once had a baby rattler crawl up an inch from my leg. once i got out of range, i was always sort of awestruck at that coil of death warning me. had a friend step on one once and it didn't make any attempt to bite him. the ones out East were by in large nonaggressive, but i wonder if this Mojave version is different.
  5. i was thinking the dentist sketches right away. i can't think of too many funnier duos than Korman and Conway.
  6. heck, i'd make the epistomologic argument that all thought, not just art and music, is derivitave. I have an English degree, and you can see it in literature, too. but it's building on those well-worn foundations and expanding on it that makes one artist different from another.
  7. from my work: "A huge population of nonvenomous red-sided garter snakes lives in pits about 4 mi/6 km north of Narcisse, west of Gimli [in Seskatchewan]. This is thought to be the greatest concentration of the breed in the world. The best time to see them (or avoid them, depending on your feelings about snakes) is mid-April to mid-May, when tens of thousands of snakes mate in giant, writhing masses."
  8. i'm blocked by filter to do the research, but i do wonder about the varying win probabilities throughout football, baseball and basketball as far as verifying the theory that only the last few minutes of an NBA game matters. i haven't watched even the nba playoffs this year, though i will keep up with the Bucks offseason, just because i enjoy that aspect of sports.
  9. WHy does everyone seem to dislike Prince so much recently? i don't think trading a player has anything to do with disliking the guy. i think Fielder is awesome, but i think it's that we get more value via prospects and saved-arby-money than we would if we kept him. i really think of it a lot like when the A's traded Giambi, and definitely Oakland had nothing to complain about for how he performed there. personally, i assume Gamel moves faster than a bullet to first base if Fielder is gone, which also moves him a giant leap toward major-league readiness, because he's only lacking defense at this point. i don't think Gamel is the second coming as far as prospects go, but i still think he could be 75% of the player that Fielder is, and for all the other reasons mentioned, i think we get back far more than that 25% with what we'd be gaining by trading Fielder.
  10. at first i was of the thinking that you lock up your young players whenever you can, but i'm really starting to fall into the Billy Beane camp that if you've got a star prospect in the wings, you trade the player above him, no matter who he is. And that means Fielder, because Gamel would take his place. i think that hte $10M we wouldn't have to spend in arbitration, plus the Kershaw-level prospect we'd get, we'd be a better overall team. i also think that Fielder doesn't have a ton more years left that he'll be able to play defense. And then assuming Weeks stays at 2nd for the forseeable future, that's about zero range on the right side of the diamond. I think hugely of Sheets, that he's one of the best in the NL when he's healthy, though i don't think too much of Villy, and Parra needs a couple more years of experience yet before i think he sees his potential. and not that it ever hurts to add quality pitching, no matter who's in our rotation right now.
  11. yeah man. i remember that Dan Plesac game. i taped that game just so i could see a Brewer in such a big game. i remember pausing the tape just so i could read what he'd written on his glove. i think it was "hi mom" or something like that. so when all the debate started about whether the game should have one representative from every team, i remember how cool it was as a kid to see Plesac and am glad MLB still has that rule. what i don't like is that some guys don't get to play because of the extra inning stuff, like never seeing Jenkins get to bat. whether it counts or not, they should still have some special exception for that, like past the 9th inning, a player once pulled becomes re-eligible. heck, maybe like the hockey shootout, past the 10th, the game could be decided by home-run derby--each player gets three outs, one player chosen per position.
  12. That's understandable. I don't think I could do it either, but if somebody is going to I would be willing to buy 5 as well. I think a 2 1/2" pach sounds like a good size since if I bought one I would probably sew it on a shirt sleve. just thinking out loud, but since we'd need 100 patches to do it, maybe we could pin an article somewhere and people post in "i'll take 5" and we can just keep the thread open until we get 100. granted, securing payment after the fact could prove a challenge.
  13. I saw somebody stop once at a flashing yellow light, so i went through my flashing red (after stopping and yelling "what the heck?"). I held up out of curiosity and they sat there a good three minutes before they figured it out. was driving with a friend's mother once, and we had to stop her from turning left in front of a car at a green light. "but it's green? i thought i could go." what gets me at things like roundabouts and flashing yellows and such, is how people can be drivers for so many decades, yet be so completely ignorant of these somewhat common circumstances.
  14. a very similar thing happened to me when i helped out working at a bar for St. Patrick's Day once.
  15. well, even the $5 tables tend to have $25 maximums, so you'd be very surprised how much money you can make at a low-limit table. i've come across this a few times myself. Me, I play 95% book, but I do like to split 10s when the dealer shows a 5 or a 6. Unless I'm mistaken, book says that's a bad play, but I like to play it anyway. And most every time, somebody either says "the book says you should stay on that" or the rude (more common) version, of yelling at me for "taking their card." the whole comment is ridiculous. It's entirely random, so unless you know the exact next card that's coming, I'm not affecting my neighbor's play whatsoever. What also helps me is entirely not caring whether the person next to me is losing money or not. if it's an unwritten rule not to play against the book, then it should also be an unwritten rule not to tell other people at the table how to play. KegStand, i know how you feel about the dealers pushing you to play fast. it's a feeling like if they could, they'd just outright scream at you for taking even two seconds to decide. but granted, their jobs relate to how many hands they can deal in an hour. That's why all the top dealers are out on weekend nights. That's why whenever I'd go up to Ho-Chunk to play blackjack, i always only went on a weekday early-afternoon. I'd play on the three-deck table and always get the old lady who was slower than anything and would practically misdeal every other go-around. The combination of a three-deck shoe and an uber-slow dealer made it pretty easy to count, or at least have a good idea.
  16. in 1958, at the age of 24, Hank Aaron was hitting .242 with 6 HRs by the end of May. i'm just saying that offensively, Fielder is still fine and hasn't suddenly lost all his talent. dude's a superstar and come September, i'm going to be glad his bat is on our team. granted, that doesn't speak for his defense.
  17. maybe this is a Designated Lineup Thread thing, though. but Cameron's OBP and SLG are awfully low to what a 4-hitter should be, i think he'd turn into Rally Killer in that spot in the lineup. plus i think the point of Kendall-Weeks-Cameron right now isn't so much that the 1 and 2 would be driving kendall in, but that the 9-1-2 would have the highest OBPs on the team so that someone's on base for Braun and Fielder, to help solve the problem we had last year of far too many solo HRs. i like the way Ned's handled the lineup this year, moving guys around here and there, but also not to an extreme degree, just moving guys up or down one slot in the order.
  18. i haven't seen the new movie yet, but Lucas and Spielberg have pretty much turned heel for me. they've fallen in love with themselves and what they can do and it seems to be entirely about the money now, not so much making movies for art's sake--not to mention they're the epitome of this trend of rehashing old stuff and not having original ideas. especially Lucas, when he did Star Wars, sure it had great effects, but it was still about the storyline. i think their mistake now is they think we love Star Wars mostly for the effects and overall look of the movie, and so they duplicate that in the present. What they don't realize is that Star Wars and the like are lasting movies because behind it all, it's a great plot.
  19. These days, whatever George Lucas is involved in, i pretty much wait for it to show up on TBS, and I don't even have cable.
  20. if i had to pick one (otherwise i'd say none), i'd actually vote NBA. i'd figure eventually there's going to be one woman who just starts destroying the WNBA and wants to try men's pro. i'd imagine she'd have to be roughly 7'5", and the experiment would go something like the Manute Bol one did. NHL--possibly as a goalie, but any other position it's not just speed, but she'd get checked so much and so hard that i don't see a woman being able to stand up to that. boy, all this talk about a woman not having any power to play baseball at a professional level and i keep thinking of Gwynn and laughing. dang, now he's going to show up at my place and beat me up, isn't he.
  21. my thought is that you have to analyze the deal for the deal itself, and not for who Lee was replaced with. i personally wouldn't put Grissom as high as 4. he wasn't great, but at least ok. i see it that we got a mediocre OF for a mediocre RP (villone). Fetters i was happy to see leave and McDonald was done at that point. an enjoyable read, great post.
  22. i wonder what sort of hellish spiral we could decend into if blogs were all to start citing other blogs. TWR, i'm not really sure what the difference is between discussing baseball and reporting the news of baseball.
  23. i'm really in a debate as to whether i should keep bulking up or start losing the belly fat. gaining muscle mass is my ultimate goal, but i'm at 14% bodyfat already and i just hate looking down at this beer gut. plus i'm thinking with the pools opening up, losing the gut might be a little better. a couple things i picked up that i've been doing wrong with my bulking phase. a body can only handle 50g of protein per serving, and the rest is peed out, so then 4-5 meals per day is even more important, especially if i'm to get 215 g of protein in per day. i'm going to start bringing a tub of weight gainer to work. drinking a lot of water is important. i haven't been drinking enough. all the protein you take is incredibly hard on your kidneys, so you need a lot of water to help them out. with all the fatty foods you end up eating when you're bulking, you do need some sort of grain to help manage all that cholesterol, so whole grains like oatmeal each day are really good for you.
  24. if i weren't on Brewerfan.net so often, i'd be a supermodel ninja.
