  1. on family vacations, once we got to a far-away-enough state and people saw we were from Wisconsin, my father was fond of telling people that cheese grew on plants. an awful lot of people believed that one. man that was always funny. and the old one, of course, is that we all have a cow in our backyard.
  2. i'm just going to assume this wasn't on the first page yet because you central-time people haven't stumbled back from the bars yet. so congratulations, or something.
  3. very nice Sgt. all the best with the new team. well, Team A has not called me back after the aborted tryout. i feel calling the team first would sound like they're my only chance at playing ball, and then i wouldn't get a favorable contract (if one was even offered). with Team A, i'll likely be breaking off talks very soon, even though the stadium is a very beautiful place to play. Team B (who also has a beautiful stadium) has not yet contacted me on my suggestion of a tryout this Saturday, but I'm only assuming the GM has been working late at the office. I'm trying to tone down my anxiousness, as I would otherwise be too disappointed if I was cut immediately. Even though there's been no hint of a contract from Team B, wanting to end talks with Team A is in part becuase I'm suddenly more interested in playing for Team B, and I don't want the GM upset (should she find out), in case she thinks I'm leveraging one team against another.
  4. cell phone. plus it's warm now in NC at night, so nice to walk around outside.
  5. kinda forgot about the last story until i read this thread again. I had only two guesses at who the team might have been who left the phone number. I ran into the GM as she was walking her dog one night and as un-creepily as possible, asked her if she'd left a note on my car, but she hadn't. an agent of mine advised me to say "well, I HOPED it was you" but I decided against it. The second guess is what I'm going with, that it was a team who I'd recently been released from playing some joke on me. unlikely, but it helped me deal, regardless. But either way, I've talked to the cute dogwalking GM on the occasions I run into her outside, or she always gives a wave at least (i'm often on the phone, my excuse to be outside to "coincidentally" run into her.) She doesn't seem very anxious to sign me, but should things not work out with the team I'm hopefully seeing on Saturday, I'll still have to ask if she's open to a tryout. so i suppose the note on the car had a sort of non-conclusion, but at the very least, another GM at least knows my name. very small chance at signing, but a chance nonetheless.
  6. (boy, took me a little while to dig up this thread, but it was such a good one) well, currently holding pitching demonstrations for two teams, hoping one might make me an offer. On Monday I had an appointment to meet with one GM, but the GM never showed. A good excuse, but no notice of cancellation means to me that my role on the team won't be very strong, and I'm only interested in starting. I haven't called off talks quite yet, but may soon. Demonstrations for the second GM have not yet occurred, but I have some specific peripherals I know the GM is looking for, so I'm hopeful I don't have sudden control problems and mess things up. I've suggested Saturday morning to throw a few pitches off the mound, and should hear by tonight if the schedule works out. it's odd, i always have calm nerves at gametime, but this time i'm getting nervous and anxious for Saturday's demo. what's interesting is another pitcher and personal friend of mine once made the 40-man roster two years ago, but was cut very early in spring training. he has said he won't bring his family over for barbecue anymore if i sign with this team. But I've decided I'd accept a contract if one was offered.
  7. pretty much any Chevy Chase or Dan Akroyd movie. nice call on City Lights. my second-best movie ending of all time.
  8. in an article bashing the "Moneyball" revolution, the author points out in the beginning that he never actually read "Moneyball", so that should tell us something right there.
  9. i lifeguarded at my college pool. i never saw people doing it, but i'd always find fingernails and toenails just lying on the deck. indeed, it was very gross to walk around barefoot and step on somebody's toenail. so i'd walk around with orange construction cones and place them over the landmines.
  10. Are you getting enough fiber in your diet?
  11. chicks be crazy, man. chicks be crazy.

  13. a jigger of good tequila, the juice from half a lime, and a splash of orange juice.
  14. great point, bork. it goes so much further than fewer errors. in the games i saw, i was always surprised at how far back our outfield was playing. Hart because he was somewhat inexperienced, Hall because he wouldn't have fully learned to read a ball off a bat yet, and Mench because he ran slower than a gimpy turtle. so it's not just the fewer errors that are going to be made this year, it's such an improvement in overall range of both the infield and the outfield. yeah, i don't expect Fielder to improve a ton on D, but at the same time, i think he's going to have to bend down for balls in the dirt a lot fewer times with Hall throwing to him than Braun. i'm thinking any comments players make about Braun's defense at 3rd will almost be laughed off by him. i can imagine a comment of "well, whatever. i hated playing 3b, anyway." and does Braun's history of playing SS really play into anything? wasn't that only in HS he played SS? at that level he's probably getting by on simply being a phenomenal athlete and not playing the position with any of the technical skill needed at the ML level.
  15. ...not to mention the impulse to buy smokes (at least me) that you regret buying four seconds later. I only wish Snikers bars were my addiction. in regards to gas stations, would you all say you've left more pennies or taken more pennies? I leave anything but quarters, so i've definitely given more than I've taken. or took. maybe tooked.
  16. FtJ, I've never agreed with you more--man, that's annoying. I'm an editor, so it's extremely rare that someone turns a phrase incorrectly (you thought I'd say 'wrong'?). Instead what bugs me are the people who use rather antiquated and especially large words just to prove they're smart. I'm one to mispronounce things on purpose. If I had to choose two, though (besides mute point--that's even hard to type), I'd go with "irregardless" and "very unique".
  17. 1. huh? first or last matters? doesn't it all just get mixed up with the water? 2. I don't have a landline phone. 3. n/a 4. change goes straight to the pocket. seems rude to stand right there like the counter-dude doesn't know how to count. plus a missing dime here or there doesn't really matter. 5. only use signal when a car is nearby. 6. i'll only leave a phone message if the call is rather important, otherwise i'll hang up and assume they'll see i called. 7. i usually wait for some dead time in the game to get food because i don't like to miss the action. 8. i don't look for specific foods, but more something that would fill whatever sweet/sour/salty jones i have at the moment. 9. the boss has requested that i start writing things down from now on. 10. it always surprises me how much money i have in my account. it's like Christmas, but if Christmas were a horrible, horrible holiday.
  18. certainly this place is stat-centric, but that's one thing I like about the site in some ways. Other sites are awash with people who make crazy opinions and evidence them with more craziness (I hate the Brewers because it's cold in February), but here you're challenged some to back up what you're saying. One one hand that causes some of the cliquishness, but it also helps create a focused dialogue. either Brewers news or even off-topic news is posted immediately. There are times when I've come across news that just broke, I'll check brewerfan, and there will be four pages on it already. and we definitely can't forget the awesome work that Colbyjack does with the minor league forum. I've never come across a site that has anywhere near as much information.
  19. bullox, I've been anxious to hear a report.
  20. after many years not knowing where my career will go, i'm looking into grad school with a real sense of direction, and that's definitely not bugging me. (anyone here in Parks & Recreation?) my work is horrible upon horrible as always, but with the knowledge that I will be outta here in two years (ish), at least having a timeline for leaving here has made the days somewhat easier to bear, and that's definitely not bugging me. A fallback plan is also in place should I either be fired or lose it completely. The lower stress of the safety net is also not bugging me. in a city devoid of available women my age, I find myself talking to two and another is moving here eventually. so hopes are up in this hopeless town (I'm not in Madison or Milwaukee), and that's definitely not bugging me. and after four months of lifting weights, I can see muscle growth and more definition, so my work is paying off. That's not bugging me, either.
  21. same goes for Oreo Cookies.
  22. squeaky wheels get fired for stirring unrest among other employees. it's not like you're waking the execs up to the fact that they don't pay more for service time. call the Teamsters.
  23. Slinkies--after about 12 seconds, you completely lose interest. Twinkies--you only think they're delicious because you haven't had one for 10 years and are nostalgic, but really, they're nothing special. Butter Knives--a sharp knife can butter bread, too, plus it has other uses. The Olympics--you only watch it because it's the only thing on, but wouldn't watch these sports normally. Minnesota is overrated--Wisconsin has more lakes, so that pretty much leaves MN with nothing. Soup--all it does is waste your time before you get to the real food. nobody really likes soup, anyway. Monopoly--it always sounds fun until that third roll of the dice, when it strikes you that you're gonna be playing stupid Monopoly for the next four hours. plus there's always that one person in the group who is completely anal about the rules and just has to consult the box lid for everything you want to do. Thanksgiving--it's like some people have never eaten a good meal before or something. these days people only celebrate it more because it's the day before shopping season. They should really rename Thanksgiving as Christmas Eve and just be done with it. plus if your family is like mine, you'll get yelled at for wanting to watch football and not sitting down to have conversation with the whole family.
  24. doesn't he realize the Cubs just barely beat us last year? he should know the 2-game pedistal he's standing on isn't very tall. ironic that a Cubs fan is whining about Milwaukee's ticket prices. I'd have to cash in my 401K just to sit 400 feet away at Wrigley, if i found a parking space at all.
  25. Weeks has gotten something of a bad rap from people. He's been dealing with a long-healing wrist injury which has to effect his average. But to his credit, those attributes not as much affected by his wrist, OBP and SB, he's been excellent. It was said that his injury could take a year and a half to heal, so to see what he did the last couple months of 07 only shows what a great player he is going to become. I think from here on out we're going to be very happy to have Weeks on our team.
