  1. I guess I don't follow the racist/homophobic sentiment. Maybe I'd need to live in Milwaukee to be up on this stuff. If the flavour of Miller beer got too strong, I'd water it down with some Coors. Scary to think they could be doing this now. Their new company slogan could be "Like Perrier, with just a hint of beer."
  2. Update: Jock-Strap GM called my phone. I did not mention the note. Said I must have dialed the wrong number (but twice?). I do believe I am out of calls from this point forward, as I don't want to be a player who appears to be stalking some mystery team. I think I can only hope that this team notices me strolling around the ballpark at some point in the future.
  3. Ha... Isn't that the point? yeah, i kind of laughed when i wrote that, too. speaking of, I've decided the best tactic is just to mention the note, whichever GM picks up the phone. I think if Lady GM is indeed trying to sneak around, random notes would sure be a bad strategy. boy, I knew I should have introduced myself to the Lady GM when I had the chance!
  4. sorry, i probably wasn't totally clear. Only recently have I become a FA, and I don't have any ambitions for playing on two separate teams. I only meant that it was surprising when I called the GM's number that Lady GM shared an office with another GM who, uh, wears a jock strap. I am choosing to assume that they are the first brother-sister General Managers in pro sports, and rest assured, I would be loyal to whatever the new team might be and expect the same. I just wanted to update this Players Union on these preliminary contract negotiations since it's been a somewhat unorthodox process. I also wondered if the Union here might know of a good way to get the Lady GM on the phone should Jock-Strap GM be the first to pick up. I don't know if it would be cool to outright say to him "Lady GM left a note on my Ferrari but I don't really know her" or if there might be a more tactful approach.
  5. Yesterday morning I was leaving my "giant mansion because I'm a rich athlete" to go clean out my locker after my release from my old team, and I find a note on my ferrari: "Your stats are impressive. We'd like you to try out. Call us." I'm not sure at all what team this could be. Only one team around my exclusive gated community has watched me play, and only very briefly, so that's my best guess--but I like the makeup of the team if my guess is right. So I called the number last night at 8 and get the machine. And apparently two GMs are sharing the same office, and they represent different sports. The note was clearly written by a baseball representative, however. I called a second time at 8:30, but a little nervous because I didn't exactly want Football GM to pick up. No answer, and I chose not to leave a message once again. Almost did, but I don't want to start any sort of fight between them from a random athlete leaving a message. But for now I am choosing to think positively, that the GMs only share the office and have separate scouts and administrators. I sought the advice of a couple veteran players, and now we're all a little curious about how this might play out.
  6. There's something about being a Brewers fan that has messed me up as far as aligning with another team. It's hard for me to jump on any bandwagon if the team's already a winner. Apparently I need to see a team go from nothing and grow into something. When I moved to Denver for a time, I couldn't make myself be an Avs fan because they always won. My order of who to root for in a game: 1. Whatever Wisconsin team 2. Whatever team might help Wisconsin (like rooting for the Bears if their win would help the Packers) 3. The small-market team 4. The underdog
  7. GAME05 was also recently released from his obligations to his team. Originally signed as a draft-and-follow, he showed potential from the start. However, talks on a longer-term contract never materialized. Said a team spokesman through an interpreter: "GAME05 has a lot of skills, but failed to read the coach's signs on numerous occasions, so we need to go in a different direction." A replacement for GAME05 has not yet been announced. Reached at a local watering hole, GAME05 had mixed emotions about his release. "Well, it never helped that the team didn't speak English, and the coach is over there just waving his arms around. What the heck? I even bought them a translation dictionary, but they never bothered reading it. So there were frustrations on both sides, and it's probably best I find a new team with a little more enthusiasm. Still, I'm going to miss playing ball." When asked about his future, GAME05 said he would let some of his nagging injuries heal for a week, then find some tryouts and hopefully stick with a new team soon.
  8. my silver lining is going to be that we won our last game. most every Brewers site you visit in the offseason keeps the score of the last game up until Spring ball starts. so i'm happy i'll at least get to see a winning Brewers score for the next five months.
  9. I knew this avatar would come in handy one day. ha. yeah, i was pretty excited that i beat you to that line.
  10. There won't be any money. But when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.
  11. yeah, go to the bookstore to find the girls and not the library. and hang out in the poetry section so they'll think you're sensitive. this is all just what i've heard, of course. go hiking. that's super cheap and it's a great time of year right now, perfect weather.
  12. win. so sad. long season. man.
  13. well, at least we all know better this time than to think Baseball Hall of Fame. it's probably more like the Logo T-shirt Makers Hall of Fame or the Off-Road Wheelchair Racers Association Hall of Fame or something like that. wait, it's the Baseball Hall of Fame, isn't it?
  14. i remember a lot of the booking sites have last-minute weekend specials, and a ton of them are to Vegas. although what i've learned is that at the least, you might want to book your hotel room as early as possible, at least if you can get your money back. Vegas rooms double in price if you book within the two-week window.
  15. if the St. Charles sounded interesting, to piggyback Team Canada, it might be one of these companies: http://www.ski-paddle.com/main.php for Charles River Canoe and Kayak if you want to do it yourself. Bostonducktours.com is another and they run the Charles River. and the Charles Riverboat Company, charlesriverboat.com. oh, and if you wanted a guided tour of the Freedom Trail, Boston By Foot is good and runs $12 adults. they have one designed specifically for children, too.
  16. funny, i just finished up the Boston report for my work. don't know if you're a partier or if you've got kids or anything on how i could gear my recommendations. check out the Freedom Trail, which passes by a lot of the historic sights. might be a good walk, but the T runs through there, too. thefreedomtrail.org. maybe see the USS Constitution or a tour of MIT or Harvard or Fenway Park or Sam Adams brewery. or you could take a boat out to see humpback whales. the boats leave twice a day saturday and sunday in October for $35. neaq.org. is that during Halloween? a good day-trip might be to Keene, NH, which has the "world's largest" pumpkin festival and makes for a pretty sight at night when they light up all the pumpkins. pumpkinfestival.org Restaurants: Durgin Park for local food. Locke-Ober, expensive and good atmosphere Sonsie, good weekend brunch mistralbistro.com Barking Crab, good lobster and fried clams, which are better than the crabs, oddly enough. Legal Sea Foods--the bar serves a full menu, so sitting there might save you time in line, and there's always a line
  17. If not an indy league, then maybe the Sally league? Instructional Fall League? what does that even mean?
  18. no no no no no. I don't see what Patterson is going to give us that Gwynn/Gross can't. plus Patterson isn't going to sign a one-year deal with anybody. some idiot team is going to give him $7 million a year for four years then watch him revert to his Cubs production.
  19. i like the idea of Andruw Jones, actually. from everything i've read, he just might take a one-year contract somewhere to prove he can still play, like when Ivan Rodriguez played one year for Florida. not that Milwaukee needs another nothing-but-power guy, but he'd be a good plugin while we take the year to figure out if Gamel or LaPorta or Gwynn or whoever can play OF full-time. Any other FA like a Torii Hunter is going to need some 5-year contract, and with a couple higher-end prospects in the minors now, we really don't need to be signing any FA for that long. Otherwise if Melvin figures on filling LF with players we already have like a Mench, every other position is filled, and should we really go into next year with an identical offense as this year?
  20. usually it feels like it doesn't matter how well i'm hitting or that i'm a five-tool guy, that there's always some bigger, flashier prospect the organization has their eye on instead.
  21. nice call on the Hacker-Pschorr. they make an unfiltered wheat that's awesome. Becks makes a great dark beer, but i don't much care for their regular lager. Same goes for St. Paulies. PBR is like THE beer here in Winston-Salem. oddly popular.
  22. just wanted to add this list of FA bullpen/closer guys. Per usual, not eye-popping, which is why i think there will be a big effort to bring back Linebrink, even if we overpay. Otherwise with both CoCo and Linebrink gone, we'd have a pretty sorry-looking pen next year. Closers: Armando Benitez (35) Joe Borowski (37) - $4MM club option for '08 Francisco Cordero (33) Octavio Dotel (32) - $5.5MM mutual option for '08 Eric Gagne (32) Jason Isringhausen (35) - $8MM club option for '08 Todd Jones (40) Al Reyes (37) - $1MM club option for '08 Mariano Rivera (38) Bob Wickman (39) Middle relievers: Jeremy Affeldt (29) Antonio Alfonseca (36) LaTroy Hawkins (35) Jorge Julio (29) Joe Kennedy (29) Scott Linebrink (31) Troy Percival (39) David Riske (31) - $2.85MM club option for '08 Russ Springer (39) Julian Tavarez (35) - $3.85MM club option for '08 Mike Timlin (42) Luis Vizcaino (31) Kerry Wood (31)
  23. i'm a draft-and-follow right now. sounds like you've got a good scouting report, though. i'm sure other teams will send their scouts out to see you and you'll be signed in no time.
  24. it's been 80's theme songs for me for a while now. Last week it was Mr. Belvedere and lately it's been WKRP in Cincinnati......wondered, whatever became of me.....
  25. surprised you didn't like some of their others. Spotted Cow is everywhere, but their Edel Pils I think is their best. although I just brought a couple bottles of their seasonal Belgian Cherry back to NC via St. Louis, and i wasn't too happy. really good for four sips, but it's too heavy and sweet after that--doubly bad that it comes in a big bottle. I don't think i've tried any Pacific Northwest beers, but i'd be surprised there wouldn't be a ton of good ones up there. it's supposed to be the best hops-growing region in the nation. love this thread. i'm in the same boat. definitely a beer snob, but stuck in North Carolina, where I have yet to find a superior local brew (city laws discriminate against drinkers, too). Usually stick to a lot of good domestics like Three Philosophers or Old Chub. But I think I've just been spoiled--start out on Capital and New Glarus and there's really nowhere to go but down.
