  1. yeah, nice link, that was great. the same guy also has a video of an anaconda regurgitating a hippo, which was disturbing yet compelling.
  2. Bonds also has an abnormal amount of talent even compared to other professional athletes. so it should follow that his age production be better than typical, too.
  3. yeah Braun matches up, but then you start diluting the original intention of the article--less about Pence himself and more an article on a few good rookies.
  4. how do you define respect, anyway? the fact that people actually cared enough to respond to a question about the Brewers is a big step to begin with. they'll all get to know us well enough when we're whooping up on everyone in mid-October.
  5. I'll admit some ignorance with Parra. maybe i've lost touch. where does he top off as a major-league pitcher? I don't really even know what sort of stuff he throws or how many different pitches he uses effectively. Do you think there's a major-league pitcher he compares well to?
  6. maybe Melvin said he was never talking about Griffey, but i'm certainly not expecting any major-sport GM to be totally honest. if adding Dunn is the player that would prevent us from losing the division by a couple games, then even Irribarren would be worth letting go of to me. names like Santana or Garza are usually throw around for players as good as Dunn, so if we could pull of that trade for a player the level of Irribarren, it doesn't seem like an unreasonable cost.
  7. what definitely doesn't bug me is a friend regularly sending me the Brewers' magic number. even this early, it's better than when i was a kid and counted down the days until Christmas on one of those window-card things.
  8. all this time I thought Utah was on our side, those traitors.
  9. No, not in terms of 'spike differential', but for his age he certainly does stand out, just in terms of 'HR reached'. well, maybe just to play devil's advocate, Ruth (and maybe not even Aaron) wasn't exactly hitting the weight room every day like Bonds and players today do or hiring traveling dietitians and cooks. we know a ton more today about maintaining athletic longevity than even 20 years ago, so to see Bonds maintaining his production four or so years beyond what Aaron or Ruth did can't be unreasonable. and then you can take it from the flip side, too. that because athletes are more physically refined, it takes longer for the player to begin a Major League career. On the chart, those guys broke in at around 20, but Bonds took three years longer, and it's not a tough stretch to say that he has just as much natural talent.
  10. pretty reasonable response to me. heck, i might even answer no, too.
  11. i wonder if the signing of the young infield is less of an issue as we think it is, at least as far as paying to resign a guy like Sheets. if you count four young players, one is bound to leave in FA (cough*Fielder/Boras*cough), one may not meet his promise, and resigning two good players isn't going to be crushing for a team with an ok-sized payroll, especially if we profit from a few playoff appearances. plus that devalues the present few years in order to wait on the promise of the future, and we've passed that point. Sheets has some injury history of course, but we know exactly what we've got in Sheets--some time off for injury and otherwise dominating. and i think there's a lot of benefit to that vs. some other guys on the market. You've got the Oswalts who are great but slowly declining, the Zambranos who are total crapshoots or Schmidt who is sitting out a year. Sheets has never done that to us, and i think that's something worth paying for.
  12. I like Holliday, but I've still got a little bit of bile in my mouth from previous additions of Colorado outfielders.
  13. he's averaged about 230 innings between 05 and 06, so maybe a lot of his downturn has to do with simply being overworked. If Gwynn is the biggest piece of a trade to get a durable #2 pitcher for this year and next, I could see a lot of value in that.
  14. a full season of work naturally adds more value to a team than 2/3rds, so if I had a vote, i would see his partial-season as a negative. at the least, i wouldn't adjust any of his numbers based on a full season of play and just evaluate the numbers as they are. so even if he continues this amazing pace, his overall numbers would be awesome, but i wouldn't put them ahead of what Fielder or Reyes will finish the season at. and heck, the Astros aren't so far back yet (probably as the Brewers were in 89) that I wouldn't then give the award to Pence, who's kept Braun's pace for a full season already.
  15. thing is, if you wanted to replace Sheets with an injury-free pitcher of equal quality, you'd be spending $18 M a year to do it. If Sheets would resign for $14 M a year (I guess that includes the hometown discount), wouldn't the injury risk be worth the $4 M savings? Plus by all accounts, Sheets is a great clubhouse and character guy. There's a value to that, too.
  16. do you really see him skipping starts, though? limited innings or not, with Sheets gone, it's possible he becomes the most consistent (or even best) pitcher out there. And when you're only a few games up, it'll be awful tough to see his start be given to someone else. I'm a little surprised they didn't say they'd keep Gallardo in the bullpen and have Villy be the 5th starter for a while.
  17. introducing Ted Yost, Ned's identical twin brother. boy, how bullpen performance will either make you look like a goat or a genius, and nothing in between. i get the idea of the post, though. at the least, Ned's lost a tiny bit of his patience with players, which he's had since he started. I've been surprised with sitting Weeks, since he's usually let players hit out of slumps like he did with Jenkins last year. but maybe pulling pitchers early instead of stretching them to get through 7 has a lot to do with having two awesome long relievers in the pen in Gallardo and Villy.
  18. this is great. if anybody has anything that would alleviate the boredom at work, that would be perfect. maybe something to read on the Internet or even interesting Wikipedia stuff to research. because bored I've got. I'm eight days and counting without uttering even a sound at work (and i work in an open office with no cubicles) and haven't had a phone call in 14 months. BF.net and the Brewers are my reason to live. the offseason is hard on me.
  19. thanks for the tip about not doing situps to get rid of a beer belly. I was actually about to buy some weights and a bench and start doing situps to lose the belly. Guess I'll have to get back into running and accept little upper-body strength, but no gut.
  20. and let's not forget September roster expansion. Parra could be called up and make some spot starts for Gallardo here and there. And assuming Balfour and Thatcher are added in September and they do well, maybe Villy could make a start here and there for Gallardo.
  21. Platteville 1999. during the school year i worked as a lifeguard. it paid the best of any campus job because we had that added responsibility of being there to save lives and all. Worst part was it was always 92 degrees in the pool, and much warmer in the spring.
  22. i remember seeing a toast on a tv clip a long time ago. the guy said that since the bride was beautiful, she naturally had a lot of boyfriends over the years (in a nice enough way). He put a bucket in front of the main table and said that any guy who still had a key to her place could now turn them in, since she's spoken for now. He'd obviously handed out keys earlier, and every guy in the room walked forward and put a key in the bucket. Then he said that any woman there could now do the same for the groom. And only this one very old lady walked forward and put her key in the bucket.
  23. what an awful site, too. you've got to dig through all those pictures to get to all those simple little posts that read "I like Pence, too." but how can any city that loved Sosa for so many years have the right to say another player is too cocky?
  24. maybe Kendall will prove to be more of an NL hitter than an AL. i think the trade at least has the potential to make the Cubs at least a little bit better.
  25. the funniest post i thought was from the Cubs fan who said he used to feel sorry for the Brewers. from a Cubs fan???
