  1. Probably with the same reasoning a lot of us use to project the team heading into every season. Not saying I'm innocent of it, but a lot of us tend to project most everyone with career norms and then 3-4 breakout players. I doubt if I looked back we'd see a lot of people projecting Scooter being sent down, ARam not getting out of his usual April slump or the starting staff imploding. I imagine it's also easy enough for someone to convince themselves that last year was actually the statistical norm and this year is actually the aberration. I also wonder what effect the extra playoff team has on decision-making now that it's easier to slip into the playoffs with a so-so team, that suddenly the strategy is to cross your fingers for one more breakout player instead of taking the long road to build a genuinely better team. Maybe April-August last season hurt more than it helped.
  2. One thing I've seen mentioned is that Jordan would sure make for a mess of bodies in the post. Him, Giannis and Jabari all play at the net, plus MCW likes to drive inside. All we've really got on the outside is Middleton who at least so far hasn't been a frequent shooter and then Mayo off the bench. Vaughn is a shooter, but I'm not counting on him to be much of a contributor for another couple of years yet. With all those people in the middle, I wonder if that would result in a lot more outside shots from Giannis and MCW, neither of which they're great at. Offensively, I wonder if Jordan would do more to close off inside lanes.
  3. "‘well, we’ll talk about that guy, but nah, you know.’ Other teams are getting some of that." If that is actually true (and who really knows) than that's unacceptable. The Brewers have had since the end of April to make a decision on what they really want to do, just who should move and their lowest acceptable offer. If true, than what has Melvin been doing for two months? With a big rebuild typically comes a new GM. It's getting a good big conspiratorial, but if there is any "We can totally compete next year with what we've got" going on, could that really be more about saving one's own skin? If DM still has his job in November I'll probably take that as a sign that we're going to keep the status quo and not do much besides adding another 33 y/o starter and Lind2.0 at 3b.
  4. holy cow you're right. I never realized that. I thought he was supposed to be another good up-and-comer, but maybe his injury did some permanent damage. I get the impression the Bucks don't think much of Ennis. The Bucks were reportedly dangling MCW to try and trade up. I figured that was mostly a reporter creation, but maybe him being traded still has some legs and Vasquez is insurance. Could it have something to do with getting a couple more wins with him as opposed to if Ennis needed to start with this whole stadium thing going on? There's a good chance Embiid will miss next season, too.

  6. I was an editor for a good few years and then a proofreader for some years after that, usually AP Style. The different styles are meant for different types of media, though sometimes the outlet just has to choose which one they want to use. That last sentence you said really rung a bell because that was the answer to any conflict we had, to just maintain one style throughout, however you chose to do it. Now, I wouldn't use it for MLA when you're writing your Master's Thesis, but that way works for most everything else.
  7. One player I kinda forgot about is Kendall Marshall. He was another young quick-riser last year before the injury. Maybe the Bucks are willing to dangle MCW on the thought that a Marshall-Middleton backcourt would be effective. Cauley-Stein would be the obvious target at that point and I've seen him jump all over the place in various mocks. It won't ever happen, but wouldn't it be fun to have both Giannis and Porzingis on the floor at the same time?
  8. Bob's Burgers!!!! Really one of my favorite shows. It's a silly cartoon that's easy to watch. "Uh, why do they call you Regular Sized Rudy?" "Isn't it obvious?"
  9. A while ago I looked up players from the last draft who were taken around where the Buck pick this time, and for the most part they all went to the D-League. So as much as I'd like to plug up this or that hole with a draft pick, I'll be happy enough if the guy ends up being a contributor off the bench.
  10. Based on my retail experience, my belief is that credit card companies charge 2-2.5% of the pre-tax purchase price per transaction.
  11. I can't believe nobody's yet mentioned Two Broke Girls!
  12. It'll really be curious if the FBI finds out if this was just one guy or if other executives in the Cardinals knew about it. If just one lone wolf, maybe we won't see much other than an individual ban. I guess as the rules go, the Commissioner has the authority to had down whatever punishment he wants to anyone, pending appeal. But then I suppose you don't want to go soft on a punishment when it's the first of its kind.
  13. Sorry to hear about that. I used to work as a lifeguard. I didn't get sunburnt, yet rarely wore sunscreen. I figure skin cancer is pretty much a guarantee in my future. That being said, how does one tell if it's just a mole or if it's something that should really get checked out? I can't say I know my body well enough to remember if a mole has always been there or if it's something new.
  14. With the salary cap going up so much in two years, will some middle-good players be more willing to accept shorter contracts thinking they can get a much bigger contract at that time?
  15. Marc Stein is forwarding a report that the Bucks are going to try for Tyson Chandler or Brook Lopez.
  16. So if the Bucks sign Middleton for $9M, that gives them roughly $16M under the cap. Right now a $16M salary would be the 16th highest in the NBA. But don't the Bucks have big jumps in salary in two years with Giannis and Parker? So maybe what we'd be talking about is a good role player FA? Ugh, that's Lopez, isn't it. Or do you think the Bucks would dangle their later draft pick this year to trade for a higher-priced center from a team looking to shed some salary? Like a guy with a two-year contract or something? Edit: I said later draft pick this year thinking that this was the year we had the Clippers pick, but I guess that's not until 2017.
  17. Turns out it isn't cheap if you want to switch your aquarium from the usual gravel+plastic plants to growing live plants.
  18. One could certainly say the same thing about Parker. Even better, one can say that about Parker after seeing him play pro ball. You really have to cross your fingers on draft picks that they don't totally bust out immediately, even such high picks. And as Patrick said, Parker is from Chicago, so the probability of the Bucks being able to retain him long-term are at least a little better. What sort of Center or draft pick could we really get for MCW, though? I don't think anyone's giving up chance at drafting Townes or Okafor or Mudiay to get MCW and a non-lottery draft pick. And then we'll be out a passer.
  19. I don't see the point of Braun trade talks. If we're not willing to give up salary than we won't get much back. And if we send money, that makes for a pretty expensive prospect we're essentially buying. Either way it seems we'd be best off with his production, even if he is more of a pariah now. Segura just seems like a sell-low candidate. We won't get much for a replacement-level player. Utility infielders are hard to find, especially at his price. Plus we get to keep the hope of him maybe being a late bloomer.
  20. It's Nick Neugebauer for me, too. I followed him pretty closely. He'd struggle for that half-season after a minor-league promotion, then the next year would be light's out. Really sad he got injured because I fully expected him to be All-Star material.
  21. I'd love to think of the Brewers trading two or even three players at once in order to get a top-tier prospect, but it seems more realistic they'd go one at a time. Aiming more for AA or even A+ guys in order to get better talent would really kill attendance. The known players leave with nobody exciting on the ML roster next season, either. Who would buy season tickets to see that?
  22. There probably isn't a gigantic hurry to trade Gomez or Lucroy. And DM has always said that you get more value for pitchers during the season and batters in the offseason. If Lohse was going to be traded this early I was certain it would have been to St. Louis, despite the usual in-division rule. Though DM certainly knows his value, there's just nobody else out there trying to out-bid. Neat to think of Milwaukee picking up veterans mostly for the sake of trading them later, but KC did that some years back and only ended up paying for injured or underperforming players who nobody wanted.
  23. I like the story about Coach Donnelly and Craig Counsell: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/26376228/ Maybe a story on Boreland making it on the Badgers (wasn't he a walk-on?) and then retirement to highlight the concussion issue and the possibility of more players retiring early. Rashard Griffith on high school athletes and that special brand of college admittance fudging. Also his choice to play in Europe over the NBA. How Reggie White turned around an entire franchise. Black athletes on life in rural and mostly-all-white small-town Green Bay. Not Wisconsin-specific, but the life of a second-tier NFL player. I know someone who barely made the roster each year but did so for seven years, and I think his circumstance is a bit different from what we see of the stars. Lots and lots of moving, constant coaching changes and struggles between what you see as your role versus what the coaches see.
  24. If I bought a subscription from nfl.com to watch Packer games at a later time, would I end up always seeing the score of the game before I get to actually watch it, just from having to go on a football site to access it? I'm going to be working most Sundays and would prefer not to have to buy a television and a cable subscription just for football games.
  25. Here are a couple of videos of Dunleavy outright pushing a player, which makes me slightly less confused to why Giannis did that to Dunleavy. I'm going to forget about this game pretty quickly. This is still a team that made the playoffs without Parker when nobody picked them to get there even with him. And it's a team that got the Bulls to 6 games when deep down we were all probably just hoping they'd be able to take one.
