  1. As long as it takes. Impossible to know when they will be a good team again, much less a serious contender. This is the year they're tearing it down. 2017 they start building it back up again (At the MLB level.) More than anything, it depends how good/ how soon the rotation will be.
  2. Seems like losing Wagner is just a shoulder shrug to most? Maybe I am higher on him. Really wanted to see if he could be a #3 type for 6 yrs+ Just seemed like a guy who could really pitch, without nasty stuff, but just really control each AB
  3. Great, now the Cardinals and their minions are not only telling us how to play the game, but how to build a team.
  4. I agree with everything you've said there. However, where are the future infielders? There's Arcia who probably comes up at some point this year and then no one until you get to A ball and below. Rivera looks like a utility guy at best and of all the pickups this offseason Cecchini is the only one who could probably still be around by the time this team is competitive again. Maybe Coulter goes to 1B but you're still missing half an infield. True. But that doesn't matter for 2016 or even 2017. You can't control what position the talent available is to pick up off the street, or even acquire in trades. At this point, it's all about value in any trade. They still have the players above to trade to get infielders. There's even guys like Villar, Cooper or McFarland could take a huge step. Just a few examples, but there are others. Or, if a year from now they are really deep with young OF talent or pitching, they can make a trade at the high minors level. Lots of ways to acquire IF a year or two from now. Once they are on the rise again, that's when you start worrying about need at any one position. At that point, you can even afford to go out a buy a big FA. Mark A has shown he's willing to do that, but now is not the time. This is a really hard sell to a lot of fans, I get that, but they are doing it the right way. So far at least.
  5. Exactly. I have noticed a lot of smart people are really struggling with how a true re-build works. Perhaps because it's never been done here. Even many in the local sports media don't get it. I keep hearing about needing a better 1B. If they trade Lucroy, they need to trade for a catcher. Now the OF is crowded, must mean Davis will be traded. No. This is the first stage. Acquire as much young talent as possible, regardless of position, period. None of these guys being picked up require moving anybody. It will be a wide open spring training, and some guys make the roster, those with options will go to AAA, and others will be dealt or cut. That's it. And it's not done. Lucroy, Peralta, and Segura still need to be traded. Maybe Braun and/or Davis. Then you slowly bring up the pieces from your system. A couple years from now we can start worrying about any holes in the roster, and fill them at that time. Until then, doesn't matter if they have 10 Flores/Liriano type guys.
  6. Overmatched at MLB level based on 100 ABs? Really? Makes perfect sense why SD made the move. He's out of options, and their OF is set, plus have a couple young guys with all their options. Sure there's no guarantee he will be a solid MLB player, that's why he was available. But I certainly wouldn't say he is overmatched after 100 ABs.
  7. No, but they are overflowing with bodies in the OF. Liriano was probably their 7th OF, out of options, so it makes sense. Just no room for him there.
  8. No thanks. I must be getting old, but that's not baseball to me. Every player has their strengths and weaknesses, I hate the idea that you eliminate their weaknesses that way. Plus, like the other changes mentioned above, it eliminates strategy which makes baseball special.
  9. First, yes, MLB will put DH in place in the NL. I'm shocked it hasn't happened sooner. I'm against it, I don't like a DH in the AL either. I enjoy the strategy involved, it's a big part of the game for me. For that matter, I don't like the talk about limiting LOOGY/ROOGY role either for the same reason. I don't care how long a game takes, baseball has never been a game on the clock. Personally, I think all they need to do is move up the start time a half hour so games end sooner. Get out by 10:00 on a week night, and it changes perceptions.
  10. Can Bill Hall do play-by-play?
  11. I think this is something Stearns will be directly involved in, along with when to sac bunt. We won't ever read or hear about it, CC will present it as his idea if a game situation is brought up in the press conf after a game. But I guarantee Stearns will not allow a trend to develop of giving up outs at the plate and on the basepaths. Beyond following the minors, I am looking forward to watching them play the "right" way. Take walks when you can. Don't get hung up and thrown out between bases. Make the right pitch when you have someone 1-2. All those little things need to get better, and become part of their DNA moving forward. I'm also looking forward to more wins than they "should" have. I do think it's important for the development of young players to be on a team that can at least compete.
  12. You hit the nail on the head. It's up to individual schools to police this, it just smells too much like big brother for the WIAA to tell everyone exactly what they can and can not say. Most schools do a really good job of this. They'll allow the "airball" chant or "we can't hear you" which are pretty tame. But if it gets beyond that, they shut it down. The schools that don't police themselves are few and far between, and only hurt themselves because they gain a horrible reputation. One school in the FVA comes to mind, everyone knows who it is, and everyone thinks they're a joke. What's weird is the parents are just as bad as the kids at that school.
  13. Except everyone handled that differently. Some remained Braves fans, still are to this day. Others embraced the Brewers when they came to town. Still others were put off by all of it, and pretty much moved away from following MLB.
  14. My favorite when I was in HS (1980s) was "Elevator, elevator, we got the shaft!" Not sure if that made it to the late 90s ; ) One of ours was "Nuts and bolts! Nuts and bolts! We...Got...Screwed!" Ohhhhhhh yea. I remember that one!
  15. Not sure. We all think we know what we would do, but if it actually happened we may react differently. Depends on the circumstances, etc. With that caveat, I think I would still be a Brewers fan but probably not follow them anywhere near as closely as I do now.
  16. Of course. But a 16 year old kid doesn't get to choose who treats them well, or treats them like crap. You can't protect them from that. Sure, they get paid, but not sure what that has to do with it. They chose to work in a job where they may get verbally abused, just as choosing to be on a HS team opens them up for verbal assaults. Frankly, these kids get a lot more crap from fellow teammates, their parents, sometimes coaches. What is HE doing on the team? Why is Johnny getting playing time? This stuff goes on all the time, and is the real problem. Finally, let's be honest about when/where these chants happen. It's not at swim meets or golf. It's almost entirely boys basketball. In fact, VARSITY boys basketball. Not many people attend Frosh or JV games, and I've never heard chants. So, kids who are "the scrubs" don't play anyhow. In fact, they get positive response when they come in at the end of games.
  17. My favorite when I was in HS (1980s) was "Elevator, elevator, we got the shaft!" Not sure if that made it to the late 90s ; )
  18. This was more than re-emphasizing rules, it's about re-defining them. WIAA blew it out of proportion by dictating what students can say. Yes, there were existing rules about sportsmanship. But "we can't hear you?" That's not even directed at players, it's directed at the other student section. If any kid is going to be devastated by a chant of "you can't do that" he has deeper issues his parents and school officials should have already been addressing. Finally, nobody has answered this. The WIAA has said nothing about cheering a missed a shot or booting a grounder. Honestly, how is that any different than a stupid chant? Either way the fans are calling attention to the error the player made.
  19. Part time job? So what happens when a McDonalds customer yells at poor little Johnny for getting the order wrong? Won't that hurt his fragile ego more than an "airball" chant? And if games aren't about the crowd, why have bleachers? Of course games are about the students, their families, teachers and staff. That's who they're playing for, it's not AAU ball.
  20. Stearns was no doubt involved in the decision to trade Santana last year, so wouldn't surprise me if he moves him again before the season. If he stays, he needs ABs. I would start him in CF at times, give the corners days off, PHing, etc. But it sure does seem like one of Braun, Davis, Santana will be gone by September.
  21. Here's my question. Even if these chants are forbidden, what's the difference between chants and simply cheering after an opponent's bad play? If someone shoots an airball, boots a grounder, or drops a pass the opposing fans will cheer loudly right? Doesn't that hurt a kid's feelings too? Personally, I have an issue with the creativity of chants more than hurt feelings. "You can't do that" was never very clever, now it's annoying. Although, here in the Fox Valley, my favorite chant is the one directed at Appleton North. When they're about to lose, opposing student section chants "start your Lexus." (ANHS perceived as the rich kids' school.) That one is still funny to me...
  22. Yea....but....it's BIGGER. ... and the exhaust port (weakness in the station) is bigger than 2 meters, too! I'm not an engineer, certainly not an inter-galactic engineer. But I would suggest they focus on the deflector shield more than the size when they design Death Star 3.0
