  1. Stearns has had to do two very different things simultaneously. Build a respectable baseball team for 2016 to avoid 120 losses, and stockpile talent for the rebuild. That is no small feat. One thing they all have in common, they can all be flipped if/when it is necessary. It will be hard for Stearns to top that last mega-trade by Melvin. But remember, Stearns was involved with that on the other side. Like Robert said though, let's see what he can get for Lucroy, Davis, Peralta, etc. If I had to guess, he's going to have to wait on Lucroy to prove himself a bit, a trade could still happen in April. But so far, he's done a good job with what he has to work with. Arguably, the Lind trade was the most head-scratching, but who knows? It may end up being the best of all of them. It's not like he made a bad deal for Lucroy or Braun just for the sake of making a trade. As he likes to say, this is a process. Early on, I'm very pleased with what he's doing.
  2. I'm not a big conspiracy guy, but I'll admit I've been thinking about it. Now that some time has past, the dust has settled, that trade looks even better. Three young pitchers, but not too young to be lottery ticket types. One who could be a #5 type SP, the other two have an even higher upside. A young OF with options who has a real chance to be an every day player, and oh yea, another OF who's ceiling is an All-Star. That's a huge haul for Fiers and Gomez.
  3. Guessing I'm older than most of my bffs on this site, so lol is out? Next you're going to tell me I can't say "rad" or "boss?" lmao
  4. Tanking is a really negative word, but yea that's what the Brewers are doing. But that would mean any team that is rebuilding is tanking. Odd that this is a big topic suddenly, when teams have been doing this forever. That Olney article is a joke. All those proposals being floated about the draft would have zero effect on what the Brewers are trying to do. Having a high (or even the 1st) pick in the draft is a benefit that comes from a rebuild year, it's not the reason you do it. If they went to a draft lottery, do you really think Stearns changes his mind and says "It's just not worth it, I guess we'll try to compete this year." Of course not.
  5. Wouldnt a Luc/Anderson trade be a similar package to the Gomez/Fiers trade in terms of WAR and years control? Id expect at least an Astros haul if we put a package like that. Fiers > Anderson, but Lucroy > Gomez. So on paper it's probably close. I do think teams overpay at the trade deadline though, seems like you get a better return then. But I think the elephant in the room is Lucroy is coming off a bad year. I don't care what anyone says, other teams have to be concerned if that was a blip, or if this will be closer to the norm for a 30 yr old catcher.
  6. Same answer as 3B. No reason to worry for two more years.
  7. Is Parker a bust? I guess it depends how you define it. Is he a bust SO FAR for a #2 overall pick? Yes. He will get better, but I am very concerned his ceiling is lower than they thought. When it comes to defense, it's not his knee or experience. He's simply too slow to guard on the perimeter, and not big enough to muscle up on power forwards in the post. He can get better at help defense, closing out on 3s, etc. but he will simply never be a good defensive player. Offensively, nothing has changed- it's all about developing a jumper. Being proficient from 3 would be even better. No idea if that will happen or how long it will take, I don't think even the Bucks know. The 2014 draft is interesting early on. At the time it was seen as this fantastic wealth of talent. Wiggins has been good, but Embiid hasn't played. Gordon is a pretty good player, but sort of turning into a 3 point specialist. Exum, Vonleh, Stauskas, lots of other lottery guys have just been meh. Point being, at least so far, it's not like the Bucks missed out on an All Star or anything. As far as the team goes, what I feared coming into the season has played out. They lose 3 good defenders and replaced them with 2 bad defenders. Result is they can't beat people 89-85 anymore. Now they have to score a lot to win, and they can't out-score most teams on most nights.
  8. Has anyone read or heard anything from Stearns regarding any changes in pitcher development? With all the talented young arms (many VERY young) I'm wondering what changes, if any, Stearns is making within the organization. Is he a believer in the Farm down in TX? Pitch counts, days off, arm slots, developing certain pitches? New person that will oversee pitching development? I could go on, there's so much to this. But I haven't seen any info on this since Stearns arrived.
  9. I agree. In fact, I think it's premature to assume Jungmann can even be part of the permanent rotation. Peralta becomes a free agent sooner, but he may be cheaper to sign long term than Nelson. All depends what they do this year, but at the end of the season it would make sense to get one or the other locked up long term. If Jungmann proves me wrong, great, one more arm to throw in the mix for at least the next 3-4 years.
  10. Something has to give. 7 starters in AAA, a couple will need to come out of the pen- at least to start the season. And A only has 6. Since they piggy-back starts, they actually need 10 SP.
  11. Right, plus Garza's contract will be gone too. Mark A will have plenty of money to spend on a 3B for 2018 if there isn't a clear option by then.
  12. Looking forward to attending the Manatees Opening Day, and then as many T Rats games as I can.
  13. Still dreaming they package Lucroy with someone else and get a haul similar to the Gomez/Fiers trade. If Stearns can pull off one more trade like that before April, I'll be ecstatic. Side note, who is Lucroy's agent? Just seems like if he was a Boras client he would have been traded by now.
  14. The Milwaukee Bucks say "hi." That has been their formula for what 20-25 years? Be competitive, .500ish and hope something good happens one season. We all know not all minor league players make it to MLB, even some of the best of them. That's what depth is for. If you have 4 high ceiling SS, chances are 1 of them will make it. Any dunce can put together a .500 team every year as well. You do it by signing Suppan/Wolf/Lohse/Garzas of the world to build a decent rotation. Add a couple bats, and you can be "competitive." Until you lose those guys, can't find capable replacements, and then notice your farm system is decimated. I'm not saying you're WRONG, it's just what you want as a fan. You don't want to endure bad seasons for a chance at being a legit contender later on. I get it, I just don't agree with it.
  15. If we are truly rebuilding, no sense for Hill to ever see the field. Scooter at least has value for the right team at the trade deadline. No matter what his limitations are, he can hit RHP.
  16. Nobody is assuming everything will be rosy in 2018. But I can guarantee it won't be rosy in 2018 if they didn't go into rebuild mode now.
  17. Hopeless 100 loss team? No. But that projected line-up above is pretty bad. Also, you can't just take a piece of a season and say "See, they were a .500 team with essentially the same roster." If they played all of last season without Gomez, Ramirez, Fiers, and Parra (and now without Lind or KRod) I assure you they would not have been a .500 team, and they won't be this season. Seems like some people are holding out hope somehow they will "shock the world" this year. You will enjoy the summer much better if you accept the fact this team is going to lose a lot of games.
  18. Good questions. Some here would say Medeiros, a few would say Lopez. But I agree, I don't see anything close to a sure-fire ace. There are several guys who COULD surprise and become that type of player. Otherwise, the jury is till out. It wouldn't be all bad to end up with 3 or 4 #2 type pitchers in the rotation at the same time. Studs? Like you said Arcia should be, and Phillips could be. A few others have real potential to be that type of player. Clark, with his swing, is almost a can't miss guy. To take it one step further, a big power bat is where they're short in the system. If Coulter can still be that guy, that would be huge.
  19. Master of None on Netflix is pretty good, especially if you are a fan of Aziz, which I am.
  20. Very simple. Keep accumulating the best talent you can at any level, any position. This is not the time in the rebuild to worry about positions. Garza could play 3rd this year and next year, and it wouldn't matter.
  21. I do, if the Brewers paid a big chunk of Hill's contract. Yes, Diaz is very highly regarded but he hasn't even completed a season above rookie ball. If he had those kind of numbers in A+ or even A ball, that would be one thing. But it's not like he's Cano already just because a few scouts think so. Don't get me wrong, I love picking up a high ceiling player like this for Segura. I just think we could have done so without giving up Wagner. But that tells me they weren't too high on him, we'll see. Not real thrilled Hill will be taking playing time and ABs away from the younger guys either.
  22. Look at it this way. They couldn't get to the WS with Greinke/Yo/Marcum or Sabathia/Yo/Sheets along with Fielder, Braun, Weeks, Hart, Lucroy, Gomez, etc. That shows you how much talent it takes to win it all, and that you need more than one crack at it every few years. What is the alternative to what they're doing? Go out and get another Garza/Lohse type? Even if they kept Lind and Segura (or even Gomez and Fiers) this would have been a .500ish team at best- if everything went right (which is very rare.) Then in 2017 just to maintain that .500ish team you have to sign Lind, Gomez, Lucroy to big contracts. Always a good idea to sign aging vets to new contracts. And now the same people complaining about the rebuild would be complaining that they can't get back to the playoffs.
  23. I'm not against the trade, but would have liked to keep the Wagner/Anderson part out of it. Segura for Diaz basically. I just don't like trading a guy who made it all the way up through the system, and was going to be the #6 starter this season. If this was the deal and they needed an arm, give them Cravy, Hall, someone like that. People are convinced Wagner is nothing more than a #5 starter, before he even had the chance to prove himself. Well, Anderson has proven himself he's nothing more than a #5 starter, and he's older and won't be a factor when they turn the ship around. Same thing with Cy Sneed, to a lessor degree. I don't mind throwing the Sardinas of the world as sweetners in these deals, but not our home-grown starting pitchers.
