  1. To be fair, he's not in the rotation. He's been given a chance to do so, based on being a bad team with nothing to lose. It's not like he was dominant and it was time to bring him up.
  2. Who said they've given up on him?
  3. I do agree with JB on one thing. Bullpen was the first word that came to mind watching him pitch. It's early, he can still develop, but his stuff just screamed bp to me. Which is fine actually, if we got a guy who is a very effective bp arm for at least 6 yrs. Still a good return for parra.
  4. It's not the amount of the contract in any given year, it's about the length. Yes, he would have been worth the investment so far. He could also be injured next year and you would have $25MM dead money for 3 years, plus a ton of money to pay an aging Ryan Braun. That's what just kills a team like the Brewers. I would have no problem paying a top shelf SP or a big bat a lot of money for a couple years. But those guys can't be had for a short term deal. It is very frustrating, but the downside is just too great to sign a big name guy to a long term deal. I think the Brewers can do that with one guy at a time, and for now that guy is Braun.
  5. I don't believe that's why guys hang around. They hang around because they love playing baseball at the pro level, and don't need much money when they're young. I have actually talked to a few players (and parents of players) and they've all said pretty much the same thing. Some, perhaps many, of these players know MLB is a long shot or not a chance at all. But you pay me a few hundred bucks a week to hear my name announced and walk up to the plate in front of cheering fans, I'll take it.
  6. I don't expect Davies to give us what Fiers did. I would be thrilled if Davies could be a solid #5, Fiers is better than that. But I don't look at it that way, since those were two different trades. What I know for sure is if Davies can be a solid #5, that's worth a couple months of Parra in a losing season.
  7. I know that type of company all too well. From what you're saying, I get the sense they're not trying to give you the run-around, it's just that it's obviously not a high priority to fill the position quickly. My advice would be to call the person there you are most comfortable with. Be honest, yet professional, and just tell them this is important to you, you know you'll do a great job for them, and it's been difficult to handle being in limbo for this long. You understand these things take time, they're dealing with other issues, etc. but can you please let me know when we can pick up where we left off? That's about all you can do at this point. Anything more and you look desperate or unprofessional.
  8. I really believe pitchers would get used to not having defined roles if you started that way from the beginning of Spring Training. Some may take longer than others to get used to it, granted. Habits, routine, etc. generally take at least 30 days to sink in. Manager/ pitching coach could walk through the strategy before each series and each game, letting them know what the plan will be. That way everyone is on the same page, and the "main closer" would know, for example, that going into the series he may not pitch the 9th if they are at a certain point in the line-up. This is all tough to do if you already have an established closer. Brewers will be in a good position to go this route once KRod is gone. Nobody will be "used to" the closer role then, so it should make it easier.
  9. They don't need to start Davies to justify trading Fiers. Hader and Houser can do that. Not to mention Phillips and Santana. Davies is simply the next man up. Won't surprise me in the least if Wagner gets another start at some point this month, maybe Lopez too. Just kicking tires for next year and beyond.
  10. I'm not too thrilled with Hader and Houser being on that list. Both seem to be finishing the season strong, why not leave it at that? Do they really need more mileage on their arms?
  11. He will be 32 entering next season. How in the world can he fit into their future plans? He would hurt them next year, since paying salary to any short-term FA next year is..well...stupid. Giving him playing time to prove himself just to trade him is a gamble not worth taking. Wren was an extreme example, as there are better short term options for CF. With that said, if it was between him and Span I would take Wren and save the money. In reality, Santana has another month to prove he can play CF, at least part time. Reed would be another viable choice. He could be a 4th OF and play CF when Santana is not.
  12. I'm sorry but this is just silly talk. It's fine to want to rebuild for the future, and I know you're joking, but it is not a great way to run a business just randomly throwing out guys to play next year because you are waiting on the "future." Tell the Astros that. Yes, I was joking about Garza. But I would rather keep Santana in CF, or take a real flier and move Tyrone Taylor up. Reed, Wren... Any of those options would cost you almost nothing, while at the same time test-driving OFs to see if they fit into long term plans.
  13. No to Span. No to any FA next year- one year deal or not. Absolutely no reason to spend more money in 2016- period. I don't care if Garza plays CF.
  14. Thank goodness RR isn't around anymore. Daviesy would sound very awkward.
  15. The whole rebuilding process starts with Braun. They need to decide whether to trade him, move him to 1B, or keep him in RF. That will go a long way in figuring out how all the other dominos will fall.
  16. Exactly, that can never be tolerated. Frankly, it's one of the most important lessons in baseball- keeping your emotions in check. You're only as good or bad as the next AB, the next ball hit to you. OT a bit, but when I coached Pop Warner I has=d a kid come to the sideline and throw his helmet. I explained that's not acceptable, not the actions of a leader (which he was), etc. Later in the game he did it again and he was benched the rest of the game. Guess what? Never happened again. (Football Mom wasn't too happy, but that's a whole other story.)
  17. Agreed. If they want to give Dominguez a chance instead/along with Perez I would be ok with that. The only other real option is Rogers, although I just don't think his glove can play there no matter how much he works on it. It's not impossible though. I just have this feeling that if Rogers got regular ABs he could be a serviceable 3B and/or 1B- at least to fill the gap for 2-3 years. He's never had that chance at the MLB level, too bad there's no DH.
  18. That may be true, but what's the downside of having him play 3B in 2016. If we go back to the original question, who is the 3B of the future? The answer to that is nobody at the A+ level or above. A 3B needs to develop from the low minors, get a young 3B via trade, or wait a couple years and pick up a FA.
  19. Wasn't their season over in April?
  20. I'll add my vote for Perez at 3B next year. Maybe Rogers can play over there (at least part time) if he really works on his defense between now and April. I absolutely do not want a FA 3B, even if there were some better names on that list.
  21. The Brewers have the luxury of starting him at SS again next season, and then we'll know for sure. We all get excited when young players have a great first season, or half a season. Think they're lousy if they don't produce big numbers right away. No doubt Segura, today, is barely an adequate starting SS in MLB. But players develop differently, and we don't know yet if this is Segura's ceiling or floor. Now, normally you don't wait 3 or 4 years to find out, but the Brewers are in a position to do that. Same thing with Davis and Scooter for that matter. 2016 is the year to find out what we have in these three players. None of those guys will bring back much in a trade, so I would rather roll the dice and find out if these guys can play every day or not.
  22. No way. NBA lost a ton of fans because they were sick of all the antics, arguing with ref after every foul, etc. So much so they had to change the rules to try to cut down on that stuff.
  23. Of course race has nothing to do with it. Bryce Harper rubs me the wrong way probably more than any other player. And it's not about "offending" me, I just don't like it.
  24. bump ... Just so we can reflect back at how most of us homers were way off lcbj68c had the lowest win total guess. (From my quick scroll through the thread) ... I am hoping for more than 90 losses as I really want a top 5 pick. But we do have a good shot at the Cubs in the World Series He also named Garza MVP, so that should cancel out his record prediction
