  1. Why would he delay his long term mega- contract by one year? There is no good reason for him to add a year to his current deal. Like it or not, this ends only one way. An 8 year /$200MM contract after the 2011 season. And it won't be with the Brewers.
  2. 1 SP GALLARDO 2 SP BUSH 3 SP PARRA 4 SP SUPPAN 5 SP BURNS This will look great on all the off season marketing materials. Makes me want to go out and buy season tix!!!
  3. Well, that's what they do in the low minors, of course. Good point by pitchleague about his delivery. Since that's probably a big factor in his success, I wouldn't think changing it is a wise move.
  4. I would like to see Hardy take over the Counsell role for the next couple years. A vet who can play all over the IF, pinch hit, etc. That's not to say he will never be a full time started again, but it may work best for both sides if he took on this role for a while.
  5. The Coffey thread got me thinking whther anyone in the bullpen could possibly be a viable starting pitcher. I went through Coffey, DeFelice, etc. and kept coming up with "no." Then I thought of Stetter, which really got my mind going. A strating LHP would be nice to have, and Stetter certainly has good stuff. Three pitches he can throw for strikes, and he's able to get right handers out too. The obvious problem is that he's been a reliver for a long time, and it wouldn't make sense to change his role this year. But what if you can start stretching out his outings in Spring Training, and gradually lead up to getting 6 innings out of him as a starter? I'm sure I'm missing something, but maybe this is worth a try?
  6. Sure, how about Davey Lopes? Tom Treblehorn?
  7. These lefty/righty splits are getting out of control. Fielder now has the same BA either way. Why? Obviously he's a great hitter in general, but he has played every day against LHP! Gamel was fine vs LHP, but Macha refused to believe it. These young players need to face both, because if not now...when?? If it becomes obvious a guy is clearly over-matched THEN you take action. But for the love of God, let these guys PLAY if you bring them up!! Please?
  8. May as well start McGehee,Hurricane, Escobar, and Gamel the rest of the year. (Each would get at least 4-5 starts a week.) If you're making drastic moves, may as well give these young guys a chance to play. I agree with bringing up Heether and Salome or Lucroy too. At this point why not? I rather have a window to see their major league potential rather than worry about service time. Service time doesn't matter if you're not sure if they can be long-term options. Sit or deal Counsell and Lopez and move on to the future. Oh, while we're at it, give Cody a few starts...
  9. I think a lot of people may be discouraged to learn both Hardy and Hart could very well be back next year. First, they are relatively cheap players. Also, both are performing under their career numbers this year. Given their performance this year, what type of pitcher do you really think you'll get for them? Finally, I'm not so sure they're prepared to throw Escobar in there as the every day SS from day one. Believe me, I'm frustrated too. But we need to remember that a trade has to involve the proper risk/reward. Both Hardy and Hart have proven they can hit btter than they have this year, and to give up on them for a run-of-the-mill arm doesn't make sense. They can sign a guy like that via FA. Now if they could somehow throw Hall and/or Suppan into a trade, I would be all for it- even if we get little back. Just clearing the salary would make it a worthwhile trade.
  10. It SEEMS like many of the Brewers regulars are streaky, but i don't know how you compare that to the rest of the league. Hardy, Hart, Weeks (when he was playing), Cameron...all streaky players. But maybe most teams have a few players like that? I haven't looked at the stats recently, but last time I did the Brewers were near the bottom of the league in RISP. That would obviously have a huge affect on scoring runs consitently. OBP can be high, but if there's not a hit to drive those runs in, OBP doesn't do you much good. Interesting question though. I would think OBP and RISP together would generate more consistent run scoring, but then again those stats can be streaky from game to game too. I guess that's a long way of outlining my answer, which is simply....I don't know.
  11. Well, that's what you get with a surplus of infielders and a lack of outfielders. So far I've read about moving Weeks, Gamel, and McGehee to the OF. I've ssen Hardy moved to 2B and 3B. And I've seen moving Escobar to 2B. This is natural, as all of us are trying to make the pieces fit. But to answer your question, I haven't seen or heard anything from the Brewers about considering any moves. Doesn't mean they're not talking about it, just not publicly. I believe Gamel will stay at 3B, Hardy at SS (for one more year), and Weeks at 2B. Escobar will be brought up as a utility guy, playing SS and 2B. Eventually starting if there is an injury, or if Hardy is traded during the season. Hall has to be on the roster, backing up virtually every position on the field other than pitcher. They'll try to move McGehee, and if they can't, he'll be the other utility player, getting time at 3B and 2B until the situation works itself out. That's how I see it, room enough for everyone. Keeping McGehee isn't the worst thing to have, since Weeks health is in question and Gamel isn't a fully proven commodity. Good insurance to have on the bench. Escobar can have time to settle in, I don't think Macha is a fan of throwing a young player into a full time starting roll anyhow. I could be wrong, but I think it's near impossible for McGehee to play OF, and I really doubt they move Weeks out there either. About the only move like that they may consider is moving Gamel to LF and Braun over to RF. Hart is traded, moved to CF, or becomes the #4 OF.
  12. I love the idea, unfortunately I don't think it's realistic. Nobody is going to give up a solid #2 type starting pitcher for Hardy and McGehee. Think about a year ago or so when Gallardo was the #2 pitcher behind Sheets. Would you trade Gallardo for Hardy and McGehee?? Sure we could get the Nats #2 starter, but I don't think that's what you had in mind. I think a more practical way to go would be to trade some combination of Weeks, McGehee, Hardy, Hart, etc. for a real solid bullpen arm or two, and/or a starting CF. Not as urgent as starting pitching, but needed just the same. Any real quality starting pitcher that can be had in atrade will have injury issues, or in the last year of their contract. Best bet will be to sign a Free Agent for big bucks, someone with a talent level somewhere between Suppan and Sabathia. Otherwise, I'm sure Melvin will try to turn water into wine by bringing a few guys into camp with potential. Then it's wait for the farm. I just don't see an easy way to add a front of the rotation type of starter, there's lots of teams looking for the same thing.
  13. Strange laws? It's Nashville, not Pakistan. Sorry, just struck me as an unusual question to ask!
  14. Well, this is how it works. If you like it or not, this is how baseball has worked for 100 years. Retaliation isn't always the same game or series, it often comes much later. I know many here think it's silly or pointless, but it is tradition. And like it or not, protecting guys is still important to today's players.
  15. I want to see Dillard or Cody. If for no other reason than to see if either of these guys has potential to join the rotation next year. I see it as a mixed blessing. There's an open spot in the rotation, why not fill it with someone who may actually have a shot to stay there permanently?
  16. Burns next start would be at home I believe? He pitched well last time at home. But I would bring up Dillard and give him a shot.
  17. No, but there is a glut of infielders and very little on the horizon for the OF. Especially if Hart is traded. But lots of options to play 3B. McGehee, Lopez, Hardy, Counsell, Hall (sorry), Heether, etc. There was no reason to believe Braun wouldn't have become a good 3B either, and he was moved. Sure he struggled, nbut with his athleticism and work ethic he could have made it work.
  18. The Jimmy V award was the only part worth watching this year. I got suckered into watching it because last year it was actually pretty entertaining- in my opinion at least. This year the comedy bits were not very funny. The actual "awards" mean nothing to me, I mean how can one "team of the year" win over any other team that won a championship? By definition, they're ALL the team of they year if they won a championship in their sport.
  19. Could it be we'll see Gamel roaming the outfield in Nashville the rest of the year? Could that be the reason he's been sent down, as well as working on protecting the inside corner? With all the IFs they have on the roster, and coming soon, seems like moving Gamel to LF would be one realistic option. Especially if Cameron and/or Hart aren't back next year.
  20. Katin would be a player included in a multi-player deal. I don't see what you get for him in trade by himself, other than another minor league prospect far removed from any "top prospect" lists.
  21. Exactly, and in two years it will be even more. Plus the fact is, none of us know what Prince wants to do. He may love it in Milwaukee but dream of playing for the Yankees or some other team. I just don't see why it's worth discussing for another year and a half. I'll take Prince and have a shot at the playoffs for three more years rather than trade him now for 3 guys with high celings.
  22. The Giants should trade Lincecum, there's a lot of pitchers in the league.
  23. I don't think it's a question of Fielder and scrubs vs several mid-level salaried vets. As has been said, position players can be filled with inexpensive talent like Gamel, McGehee, Weeks, Escobar, Salome/Lucroy, etc. The real issue is this. If you sign Fielder to a huge contract, is there enough money to sign Gallardo long term PLUS pay another big time starter? That would be 4 big contracts (Braun, Fielder, Gallardo, Pitcher X) for a small-market team. I suppose in theory you can hope that the #1/#2 type starter can come up through the system. That would be ideal, I just don't believe we have anyone that will fit the bill in the next several years. If they can sign Fielder, it would mean no more big contracts for a FA closer (Gagne, Hoffman) or #4 type starters (Suppan, Looper) They would really need to do everything else internally, with the exception of scrap heap finds like Coffey, DeFelice, etc. In no way do I want to "go for it" every year and literally give away the farm. But at some point relatively soon, this team needs an ace to have a legit shot at the World Series.
  24. Seems people like to throw out a few bad outings in support of a player, and focus on them if ripping a player. If you look at a bigger sample (2008 to the present) you'll see he's not horrific, but he is at replacement level. Pretty good BB/SO ratio, but the rest of the peripherals aren't that strong. 2008/2009 numbers are as such: "Acceptable" WHIP 1.31/1/1.45, bad ERA 4.07/6.41, and probably the most alarming number- opponents BA: .319/.333. He also gives up HR, I don't have the numbers vs avergae relief pitchers but it seems like he's giving up more than his share. All this tells me he's borderline. I can live with keeping him in the pen a bit longer, and wouldn't shed tears if he's not back next year. Relievers do seem to be hit and miss every year, moreso than other players. Lots of examples of this, but Coffey is a good one. Since Villy is young and doesn't cost much do need to panic.
  25. He already has been moved down in the pecking order. Just ahead of Smith. It's not possible to keep him out of close games, because often times there's nobody else left to bring in. Friday's game is a perfect example.
