  1. So who was RR supposed to use in the 8th inning? Saito and Hawkins were hurt and missed a lot of games At what point was Hawkins unavailable this year?
  2. One of the biggest benefits of acquiring K-Rod was that it moved Loe from a position of weakness (8th inning guy where he would routinely have to face tough lefties) to a position of strength (enter game with guys on base against RH batter when a ground ball helps a lot). I like the K-Rod move but am frustrated we needed to make a move based on our manager misusing players. I think we acquired players who will help us but like many other posters I am not confident that DPR will use them properly. We've got the personnel. Bring up Carroll for Counsell and Green for Wilson. Morgan/Carroll CF platoon. Green/McGehee 3B platoon. Lopez/Hairston/Betancourt share 2B/SS duties. Hairston could also pick up some starts in CF or 3B if necessary. Gomez heals, Carroll goes down. Weeks heals, one of Green/McGehee/Lopez/Betancourt goes away. It's easy if you don't insist on wasting roster spots on Counsell & Wilson. I mostly agree with that except Kotsay needs to go as well.
  3. To Logan's comment about Morgan's defense still making Morgan the better option, I can't agree with that. Morgan has good but not great CF defense, and the reports on Carroll are that he's solid defensively. I don't think there's too much lost defensively from Morgan to Carroll--neither is at a Gomez level, for example. Morgan is a career 17.5 UZR/150 defender in CF. That would be second best in baseball this year. I know the innings could be an issue but he is still a 20.3 UZR/150 guy in the outfield overall. I would have a hard time assuming any AAA guy more than above average without seeing him quite a bit so I feel pretty safe assuming Morgan would be a better defender because he has played elite, or close to it, defense in CF so far in his career.
  4. My point was that 2011 Yuni has been an improvement over 2010 Escobar, and is a push or slightly below 2011 Escobar (depending on how you value defense). He really hasn't to this point. At the start of the year Yuni was expected to be about the same as we got out of Escobar in 2010. Yuni has been a negative so far.(-0.4 this year for Yuni to Escobar being 0.9 last year) You can question the UZR portion of WAR and probably give him a bit back and put him at 0 WAR if you give him his normal UZR. Unfortunately Yuni has been even worse than advertised.
  5. At the same time there have been very few threads talking about the positives on this team. Our rotation has been lights out lately. K-Rod and Axe have been very good. Braun and Fielder have been MVP worthy. Lucroy gives a hitting threat at catcher. I dont know maybe it isnt that bad but it seems like there are more negative threads than normal. It's possible that there are more negative threads than usual. Negative things are always going to attract more discussion. That is just the nature of the internet. Lots of statistical discussion has died off in recent years. We also haven't had much in the way of prospects brought up and there really isn't anybody we are looking forward to seeing(outside of Green) like in years past. I guess I am just of the opinion that there are fewer threads overall and fewer positive threads, not more negative threads. I know that is splitting hairs. There has also been a definite shift in baseball philosophy in recent years. I started a Weeks for All-Star thread. I would say that Morgan in CF offensively and defensively is probably very close to if not better than Carroll in CF.
  6. I think there is a lot of frustration over having so many obviously weak players on the team and DPR is seemingly oblivious to how bad those players are. We are likely very close in talent to the Cards and we are talking about having a very close division so every game is huge. I don't think it is over the top at all. Nobody is calling for Melvin's or DPR's head, yet. RR is now forced to play Hairston in center against every lefty. No he isn't. Leave Morgan out there and move him down the order. There are always choices.
  7. There are other players than just Betancourt drawing criticism. McGehee, Kotsay and Counsell amongst them.
  8. Yuni would have to improve to be below average defensively. Yuni gets singled out for 2 reasons. 1)He has no track record of success in the past few years. 2)For some reason people feel compelled to defend him which is odd, see #1. Neither Yuni or McGehee are doing anything well at this point. Every other player can at least hit enough to make up for their defensive shortcomings. Yuni is probably our worst defender on the field at what is considered a premium defensive position.
  9. Clearly your hate for Betancourt isn't even allowing you to make a rational argument. Not really. Just because you disagree doesn't mean the argument isn't rational. I see your argument as completely stuck in irrational baseball dogma for example. "He's hitting well so we should ride the hot hand." One game or week isn't predictive of a guy continuing to hit. He is a bad hitter and defender. He should be removed promptly from the daily lineup. There is clearly something to players having a good stretch of games where they are seeing the ball well. Betancourt is having a streak where just about every time he has an at bat he is hitting the ball hard. You don't bench him while that is the case. It isn't a terrible strategy, it is the smart move. It really is terrible strategy. Yuni doesn't have the skill Hairiston does. Either on defense or offense. There is no reason to expect him to hit better tomorrow than Hairiston. Add in Yuni has the range of a guy falling down on defense and Hairiston is clearly a better player.
  10. Yuni has had hot weeks before. Having a good game should not increase expectations of a player for the next game. You don't ride the hot hand. It is terrible strategy. I know you like Yuni but starting him is really indefensible.
  11. You can't put this on RR - he has to play these guys and he can only play the guys on his roster. It's Melvin's job to give RR quality players.I agree that Melvin needs to make a few moves. I stated that in an earlier post. Counsell and Kotsay starting today. DRP has choices and constantly makes bad lineup choices. More excuses. His defense still stinks and even during his "hot" streak he is barely hitting better than Harriston has been hitting all year. There is no reason at all to continue stating YunE-6 more than a handful of times a week to give other, more talented players, a day off.
  12. You are right we did. How has he been so far as a starter?
  13. I remember people saying we will upgrade SS at the deadline. Here we sit, stuck with Kotsay and YunE-6. Sitting with a 3B who management is wishing will improve and a pretty old bench player with rapidly declining skills. Worst of all we are stuck with a manager who thinks all 4 of those players will somehow contribute enough that they should get starts.
  14. What stud 3B is out there that we can get? Same thing for SS? Those positions are so bad right now that we don't need a stud to drastically improve them. Kotsay and Counsell need to be gone. Dillard needs to be sent out. McGehee should be a bench player or the small half of a 3B platoon with Green. It is more about getting rid of DPR's players who suck than actually needing to bring in stud players. Barmes for Yuni would be a pretty big upgrade at this point.
  15. The additions are fine. There are a few subtractions that need to be made to improve the roster. A few of DPR's toys need to be taken away so he stops hurting himself and others.
  16. 'Best player' means 'hasn't had a hit since about May'. You just have to figure out 'Rock-Speak'. RR said Kotsay is in there for his bat. That says it all..253/.308/.358 vs .280/.333/.371 Good call Ronald.
  17. It is obvious Morgan got hurt yesterday. There really is no other reason to start Kotsay in CF. If Lucroy doesn't need a day off nobody does.
  18. Now if we can just get the Astros to part with Barmes. I am sure we can find a crappy SS to give them.
  19. That would be awesome. He goes into one dugout in one jersey and emerges from the other dugout in another jersey.
  20. If true this move does nothing for me. I am not seeing where he is much better than the rest of the middle infield players we already have. Depends what we gave up. Better not be anything of value.
  21. I've tempered my expectations at this point. I think Melvin might make one more small move, but it won't be for Furcal or anything like that. Maybe pick up another mediocre-ish veteran utility guy (which would mean Josh Wilson gets DFAed), or something along those lines. We really need a SS who can play 2B until Weeks comes back. I don't think I can handle having Lopez start the whole time Weeks is gone. Until something gets done about Kotsay, 2B and 3B I am officially in protest of this roster. It is really crappy on the fringes and those 3 things could be addressed easily from within.
  22. Just because the game is in Milwaukee doesn´t mean the Milwaukee players didn´t have to fly in the night before. Sure for a short homestand but generally a team stays at home for a few series at a time. You have also completely ignored the fact that no 2 ballparks are completely the same.
  23. Except the only difference in traveling is whether you sleep on a hotel bed or your own bed at home. I really don´t think one´s tiredness would be all that different. Home teams have to travel too, since they have series on the road. You mean other than getting less sleep because of travel time. Especially those West coast trips where your schedule is thrown of by a few hours.
  24. There may be something to the emotions but you can't ignore that traveling is tiring and the home team doesn't have to travel. I am not denying emotions have some effect. I am saying that you are more tired on the road which leads you to being less physically able to perform and has way more impact than the emotional side of things.
  25. Is staying in a posh hotel all that more tiring than staying in your posh home? Yes, because it isn't home. I don't care how nice a motel is, it isn't home. You don't have to travel to play at home. You have more time to rest. Like I said, the batters eyes are not the same in every park so being used you your home batter eye probably has something to do with it.
