  1. That is all that really matters. It probably isn't a big deal in the long run and could have huge benefits for the team. You almost never hear about players not resigning with a team because of stuff like this. Remember back when Fielder didn't want to sign his contract with the Brewers because they didn't offer him a significant raise? He signed a two year contract the next year that avoided the first two years of his arbitration. MLB is just not about relationships. Especially when the agent is Boras. It's about money. Whoever offers the most money or close to it will get the player. Milwaukee can't compete or come close to competing for the biggest contracts. Explain what the "huge benefits" to the team are. I see no benefits from the move. I just don't see the point of messing with a player that might be part of the team's long term plans. It doesn't even matter if Boras is Zach Davies agent. It affects how other young players perceive the organization. Extra year of service time. Huge for a team with limited payroll. I doubt it has more than a minimal effect. The players understand how these things work. Teams like Milwaukee have t handle things this way because they can't buy talent like other clubs.

  3. Spoken like a Fantasy Baseball owner. In real life, it's not the case. Baseball players are real human beings with thoughts, feelings, and opinions. The way to get the best out of them, in this day and age anyway, is not to treat them like chattel if you can help it. Stearns crapping on Zach Davies to get a couple of meaningless plate appearances out of marginal player is not a good use of human resources. If you say so. I see little proof that this is true in MLB.
  4. If the Brewers reputation wasn't hurt by how the stuff with Hardy went down, not much will. I get Boras putting on a show for one of his clients. That is his job. MLB isn't about relationships. It's about everyone looking out for their own best interest. The MLB team is trying to maximize the talent they get for their money. The players are weighing if they want big money or want to mitigate their risk and take a smaller contract.
  5. I was watching a TV show where a guy said "we have his hard drives." He held up a power supply while saying it. Ugh, that's not even trying.
  6. I agree with this sentiment. Braun didnt make the All-Star team because most of the roster is picked by player vote now, and then the manager fills in with teams that are missing players, etc. Due to Braun's reaction AFTER being exonerated I think he really alienated a lot of people. If he had just kept his head down, said nothing, he wouldnt be any different than any other PED guy. But he is disliked by a lot of players (I believe) due to the way he acted AFTER he won. If his failed test was not leaked he would have been just like every other PED user. Whoever leaked the failed test should be held accountable.
  7. Consent is required for all sexual contact. No is always implied. If impaired by alcohol consent cannot be given.
  8. Relievers are a dime a dozen. Smith goes down. Jeffress takes over. We have had a revolving door of closers over the last decade and all were pretty good.
  9. I have the ET732 and I love it. It is a little awkward to set the target temps but it works great. Decent range but it is awesome for monitoring while you are smoking. I like to char the temps in excel sometimes.
  10. If your team sucks and all you players are the suck you shouldn't get an All Star.
  11. This statement maybe true in bizarro world. If a 3.60 ERA is someone who looks like a non tender candidate in 5 or 6 years then someone needs to tell the Red Sox that they need to DFA David Price now before he gets to the end of his contract!!!!! His FIP is 4.94 though, wherease Price's is in the mid 3.00 range. The guy is on pace for a below average WAR season. Baseball Prospectus has 10 year projections on players, and for Nelson he looks a lot like a replacement level pitcher. That's fine for the rebuilding Brewers, but not a major trade chip, definitely not an ace, and not even the type of pitcher that a contender would use at the bottom of their rotation. I think the Wily Peralta comp is a good one right now. Who knows, maybe he turns things around in the 2nd half. I hope he does. Seriously? It's hard enough to project a year or two. 10 years is a huge waste of time. I would put no stock in those. None.
  12. Salome was a level ahead of Lucroy. That is why Lucroy started in AA the year he was called up. Salome was in AAA and we didn't have room for both. Salome had an anxiety disorder and playing baseball was very stressful. It was a quality of life decision.
  13. Braun's contract only costs $15m per year after taking out the deferred money.
  14. Find another spot. I am not going to rush just because you want to save yourself from walking an extra 20 feet.
  15. I don't know about the other ones but Fiers and Gomez not being great is not much of a surprise. I was always waiting for Gomez to drop off a cliff and Fiers never really had the stuff you would expect from someone with his results.
  16. The player's union has made it pretty clear it doesn't care about nonmembers at all. You don't have to look any further than the minor league salaries and per diem to see how much they care. If I had to bet, I would say that much of the draft structure is based on negotiations between small and big market clubs.
  17. I will admit I purposely take longer if someone is waiting for the spot and the lot is not full. Waiting for a spot can make other people wait. Not cool. I hate people that will stop the flow of vehicles.
  18. People standing around just outside the door of the building when the fire alarm goes off making it difficult for other people to get out.
  19. If we could get back something as good as we got back for Estrada, trade him now.
  20. Cutting the catchers down to only qualified so you are only lookin at 8 players is a bit disingenuous. We all know catchers don't play as much so we need to go with a lower threshold for PA.
  21. The Cardinals spend about $15m more than we do a year. That is a not drastic amount. That is looking at 2007-2015. I used that range because this year is obviously an outlier and 2007 is when we really had our payroll ramped up. The Cardinals are not a large market team or at least they don't spend like one.
  22. The problem was that Herb Kohl always wanted to compete so they never were bad enough to get good players. They didn't trade for young talent and didn't draft well so they were always stuck in the middle being a low seed playoff at best team that wasn't special. That is where the Brewers were for years. Unless you have gobs and gobs of money or draft well every single year you have to take a step back once in a while to get really good. We went to long without taking a step back so it might take longer to pile up talent than it would have a few years back. Once you have talent built up you can compete and try to draft well to keep competing year to year. I hate them but the Cardinals are a well run organization that drafts well even with lower picks every year. They are the model we need to follow in the future. Even the Yankees with all their money haven't been as good lately. When they started being good in the late 90's a big part of the reason was they brought up some really good talent in their minor league system. Of course they could spend when no one else could but they did develop some really good players.
