  1. Crap, we have to watch the Gophers feed. This is gonna suck.
  2. I guess I could see how Gomez and Escobar may feel mistreated. Neither really hit enough to justify playing more than they did. My guess is that if we had a better backup SS Escobar would have played even less.
  3. Luis Cruz had a few not so nice things to say about Macha. Then a quote about a new manager. Maybe it is just me, but I would attribute his lack of playing time to not being a very good hitter. I wouldn't be upset to see him out of the organization but we have almost no depth at SS in the minors.
  4. A pendulum was exactly what I was thinking. I am not sure Macha was overly conservative. Maybe a little but we did win at least 2 games with Carlos Gomez legs I remember off the top of my head. Loosening things a little wouldn't be bad. What I am more worried about is him going wild with sac bunting early in games. I hated it when Macha had his pitchers sac bunting so much. It was almost guaranteed they would try to sac bunt with a guy on first and less than 2 outs. Bunting needs to be done depending on the positioning of the defense. Letting guys, even pitchers, swing away when the defense is playing the bunt puts the defense in a bad position and opens up a lot of holes.
  5. It's still ongoing.
  6. He seriously said that? Ugh.
  7. I know we all hate talking about getting picks for a player after the CC debacle and the collective bargaining agreement may change in the next year but as things currently stand, the picks may be better than the return on a trade. I would prefer whatever is best for the club long term. The question is are the picks better than the player(s) we would get by trading him? I don't think they have to go for it if Fielder stays. If they do trade Fielder, I think they would have to pick up at least part of his contract to get a decent return so the salary saving might be minimal.
  8. If you don't see us contending next season, why not just trade Fielder now?I am not sure the return would be high enough. If we trade both we have to sign a stopgap for a year. If the return is good enough, trade both.
  9. How much would a few stolen bases really matter in any one game? A run or two maybe? Seems to me we would be better off getting some pitching and keeping the games closer. We did okay in close games. There was no reason to steal more bases. Our offense was fine. Margin of victory 1 run 26-23 2 runs 13-10 3 runs 6-6 4 runs7-13 5 runs 10-9 6 runs 3-8 7 runs 4-3 8 runs 2-7 9 runs 0-1 10+ runs 6-5
  10. While there were plenty of games in which the Brewers' offense went bananas, this "top offense" was also SHUT OUT 14 TIMES, which was terrible. Is it? How many times was every other team in the league shutout? Without context numbers are meaningless. However, Gomez got 7 of his whopping 18 SBs (40%) in the last 3 weeks of the year (SB #12 came on Sept. 11th). Gomez is one of the fastest Brewers ever and he had 11 SBs on Sept. 10th. Regardless of his DL time, 11 SBs with his totally sick speed is absurdly poor under-utilization. Gomez had DL time, was platooned and he was really bad at getting on base. He only had about half a season worth of PA. 18 SB for half a year isn't to bad for a guy with an OBP under .300. That is a higher SB/PA than any year he was with the "small ball" Twins. Macha did fine overall with the offense.
  11. The Brewers are for the most part a well run organization and have virtually no chance next year. Without doing something more drastic in regard to money, it will always favor teams with money. In a couple years when other teams with money start to get smarter things are going to get ugly.
  12. There were a couple links for Roenicke over at BrewCrewBall. Baesball ProspectusBatter's Box
  13. I don't see us as contenders next year so I would rather trade McGehee and let Fielder walk the next year. Replace McGehee with Gamel in 2011 and Fielder with Lawrie the next year.
  14. How could adding Greinke be depending on luck? We are more than one pitcher away.
  15. I am ok with letting our guys run more. I will however turn on Roenicke quick if I see Gomez or Escobar near the top of the lineup or I see the Brewers hitting and running or sac-bunting in non-close and late situations with position players.
  16. Funny that you bring up Pinella and the Rays as they did hire him. Their attendance didn't go up by much more than 200,000 in any year he was the manager and actually went down in his first year. Their attendance only changed drastically twice in their history. After their first year it dropped dramatically. It went up dramatically in 2008 when they started winning and has stayed up since. Paying big money for a "name" manager will only make you a sideshow. You want attendance and recognition, win games.
  17. This is the least popular choice as far as creating fan excitement is concerned. The Brewers will have their work cut out for them selling season tickets this off-season. The team will sell or not sell tickets based on their wins and losses. Nobody will care who the manager is by midseason. He will either be savior or goat based on how the team plays.
  18. He would have been my top choice of the 4 finalists. Cora would have been second. As long as we didn't hire a fired manager I will be happy, ish.
  19. Why should we try to get lucky in the next couple years and suffer an even longer down period a few years from now? I look at it as we can suffer for a year or two or be almost competitive the next couple years and suffer for several years after that. We are still building up our talent base to be consistently good.
  20. There is, completely a reason to justify it. Supply and Demand. There is a much larger crop of guys who can play 1B than 3B at the MLB level and the majority of them will outhit McGehee. If he can't play 3B, then he's just not nearly as valuable a commodity. It depends. If you are talking about signing a FA offense matters. In our situation where we will be starting Hart, Braun and 2 of McGehee/Fielder/Gamel offense doesn't matter. They all will be playing regardless. The best thing to do is move them around so we have the best defensive alignment possible. As a commodity, McGehee playing 1B for a season will not hurt his value as a 3B. His defense at 3B on the other hand...
  21. If Melvin is making so many terrible choices why would we want to give him less leeway to make mistakes?
  22. Yeah, that $7 million could go a long way toward signing an impact player like David Riske for three years (about half his contract) or LaTroy Hawkins for two.People keep bringing up bad signings. You guys do realize we have signed good players for that kind of money too. Cherry picking a couple injured guys and trying to prove your point is pretty weak.
  23. Ugh, we have a meddling owner. Even if you don't think Melvin is a good GM he should still be making decisions about who is hired as the manager.
