  1. Unless you think Attanasio is lying of course.
  2. A NY paper wants to do away with revenue sharing. Go figure. Without revenue sharing we have a $40-50m payroll, maybe. Revenue sharing may not be doing enough to provide competitive balance but overall it is helping at least a little. I wish people would quit pulling out Florida and saying that revenue sharing isn't working. Who outside of Florida does not seem to be at least trying to improve their team?
  3. on the other hand calling up guys who will probably fill a role on the team next year gets them exposure, and helps get them used to the longer season for next year. Odorizzi doesn't fit that description and we are likely to be a low 80's win team at best next year so it doesn't pay to have him up next year at all unless they are planning on bringing him up full time in the spring of 2012.
  4. I believe that a baseball season is about 180 days long. You need 172 days of service time to acquire a full season of service time. However if you are on optional assignment for less than 20 days you get service time for a full season so it is more like 3 weeks in the minors not 1 or 2. Usually the super 2 cutoff is around 140 days but that changes and could go lower since most teams are very conscious of service time and that extra year of arbitration from being a super 2. I agree with your overall opinion that a few weeks of a reliever and their effect on wins and losses isn't worth the service time you would use to have them up. Even the difference between starters is very little over 4-5 starts. Only a few runs. Per Cot's
  5. Looks like we lost every player that was brought up as a possible loss.
  6. It is one thing to be conscious of the service time value, it's quite another to treat not playing as more valuable than playing. Sure if you completely ignore how good the team is. Our team was a low 80's win team this year. No point pushing guys for a couple wins unless you are at least mid 80's win talent. In my opinion you go with your best team if you think you are a high 80's win team otherwise you are just wasting service time. It is easier to bring guys along slowly an maybe hold them back a bit than send a guy down if he is doing well at the MLB level. A player is almost always going to be better and more valuable in their last year of arbitration than when they first come up. If you call a guy up in September that is one more month you have to hold him back the next year to gain a year of service time.
  7. Cause it's Jim Edmonds. Jim freaking Edmonds. Eleventy million time gold glove winner.
  8. It isn't a few months of service time though. It is a full year. A high 70's win team needs more than a hot streak to be in playoff contention.
  9. It doesn't make much sense to use service time on a guy who may or may not be ready for the majors if your goal is to be just a little over .500. If you think it may make a difference between making or missing the playoffs that is another story. We were a low 80's win team talent wise this year. That isn't a team I want bringing up guys unless they are definitely MLB ready.
  10. If true this is a little surprising at this point. I don't think we expected to see Bush with us next year but it seemed more like an offseason move. I see little reason to bring up any of our minor leaguers to start for us. Most are at or close to their innings limit for the year. I don't see why they should acquire service time in a lost season. I'm just throwing it out there, but would a Lawrie September call up make sense? No, no sense at all. You would have to add him to the 40-man roster a year sooner than necessary and either try to get him through waivers or keep him on the 40-man and use an option next year. Besides that you would have him gaining service time for no reason.
  11. I would probably drop baseball all together. Even now I have little or no interest in baseball outside of the Brewers. That is of course unless the Yankees suck so I can give my neighbor a hard time.
  12. The 2 September call ups are what pushed Gamel over a year for service time this year.
  13. A+ next year to start with a move to AA mid season. AAA to start 2012 if he pitches well in 2011 with a possible move to the majors ni June or July depending on our rotation needs and how well he pitches in AAA.
  14. What difference does it make if pitched 100 innings in AA or MLB? They were going to limit his innings at the MLB level as well. Even the Yankees mentioned limiting Phil Hughes innings this year at the MLB level despite his success. Strasburg's career high for innings was just over a 100 so there was talk of limiting him to 140 to 150 this year whether those came at the MLB or AA or AAA wasn't really going to matter to his elbow. 140 innings will only get you through roughly 4 months of baseball. I see no reason to bring up a guy who will not be able to contribute for the whole year. It also gives you a chance to see how he handles the stress of a whole year of professional baseball. Pitching in the minors may not be much different than pitching in the majors but pitching in the majors is drastically different than pitching in college.
  15. Both actually. I found this recipe. There is a also an internet store that apparently does pretty good clone kits that has it cheaper than putting together recipes on your own. Austin Homebrew Hennepin clone. I tired putting together the Hennepin recipe on Midwest Supplies and it came out to over $60 and I think that was before the yeast.(which with a big beer like this I think they recommend double pitching or making a big starter)
  16. Yeah we were kind of sloppy on our first brew with almost everything except sanitation so I am happy with how it turned out. We didn't actually temp much of anything. Didn't take an OG reading.(FG was at 1.008 though and we just left it ferment for 3 weeks, if they explode at least it is at my brother's place http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif) We are working on a procedure sheet for bottling and boiling. That way the 2 of us are not stepping over each other to do things. There was a lot of idle time while one of us was standing around watching the other guy. Not a bad thing for our first time so we both learn. In the long run though I think we will be much more likely to continue if it doesn't take to long. Edit: I have made up some spreadsheets on Excel to print out and put in a 3 ring binder to keep notes on.
  17. I don't think it will be much of a problem to match our CF production from this year so far. Edmonds only hit .260/.316/.428/.744 as a CF this year for us and that was mostly with a platoon advantage. The Edmonds mystique is much bigger than his actual contribution. CF .248/.302/.388/.690
  18. I bottled over the weekend and it only took about 2-2 1/2 hours including cleaning and sanitization. I think the actual bottling only took 30-45 minutes with 2 of us. One filling, one capping. I think we turned off the boil to soon on our first beer. There is not much hop flavor. We were supposed to add the last hop addition and boil for 5 minutes. We pretty much turned off the boil right after the last hop addition. Of course that may be the style. Already have our 2nd beer kit in hand ready to brew. I think I will do a few more kits but at some point I want to do a Hennepin clone to be ready for opening day. From what I have read it is a 4+ month brew including conditioning.
  19. It isn't hypocritical. In college sports your team's success depends on the perception of the conference and thus the success of the other teams in your conference on the national level.
  20. Braun also had most of his games in the 4 hole while he was struggling over the last 3 months.
  21. Service-time landmarks * 3 years o A player with at least 3 years of Major League service is eligible for arbitration. (Eligibility for arbitration also is extended to players just shy of 3 full years of service. See Super Two.) o In addition, a 3-year player may not be removed from the 40-man roster without his permission. The player may choose to be released immediately or at the end of the season. * 5 years o A player with at least 5 years of Major League service may not be demoted to the minor leagues on optional assignment without his consent. A 5-year player who refuses an optional assignment to the minors must be offered his release. o A player with 5 years of service who has been traded in the middle of a multi-year contract may, during the off-season, require his new team to either trade him or let him become a free agent. If the player is eventually traded, he's not eligible to demand a trade again under the current contract and loses free agency rights for 3 years. However, the 2007-11 CBA eliminated this right for players signing multi-year contracts under the new CBA. Players signed to multi-year deals before the effective date of the 2007-11 CBA retain the right to demand a trade if traded during the life of their current contracts.
  22. That's right. It is more than 3 years since Gomez first appeared in the majors.
  23. Why pull Narveson the previous day then?
