  1. Why would we trade Weeks? We don't have a reasonable replacement for him right now.
  2. We have Hawkins on a 2 year deal. I think we should have been sellers last year and I think we will be in a position to be sellers this year. Lots of pitching would be nice but I really don't think we are likely to get any decent pitching in return on a trade. We are pretty thin at SS in the minors. 2B isn't really all that good either unless Lawrie can stick there which is why an extension for Weeks would be great. We have a lot of bats that could fill 3B, the corner outfield spots and 1B. Another good bat wouldn't hurt though.
  3. We had a need at 2B. JDLR was going nowhere with us. Cordero was a good closer for us for the rest of that year and the whole next year. Lee wasn't going to resign and Cruz was blocked and didn't look very good.(we still could have claimed him off of waivers a year or two later)
  4. I also had 11 but my breakdown wasn't quite right.
  5. Uff da. Nobody predicted only 9 wins. I was hoping if I missed it would be because I overestimated them not the other way around.
  6. Hey, I went to the final 2 games of the Cubs series as well. First and last time I'll attend 4 of 5 games. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gifI remember you positing something about that. I was trying to pull together some mostly unrelated events that had little or no bearing on each other and trying to randomly assign blame.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I figured that's what fans do when they are upset with how their team is playing. Made about as much sense as blaming the pitching coach to me.
  7. They have just been completely flat since Russ went to the last two games of the Pirates series. We should fire him as a fan because he brings no fire to the team.
  8. I appreciate Coach coming here and posting information and understand the anger towards some of the posts but I am honestly sort of turned off of Salome by some Coach's posts.
  9. Well that certainly sucks since he actually walked.
  10. The topic of never bunting.....I dont see why they dont bunt more. Everybody manufactures a run from time to time. The crew has some guys with speed who should definately bunt more.....How many Gomez haters are there who post nightly on the IGT? Gomez could bunt for a hit a lot. Escobar too. If the crew depends on them to hit bombs, they are not going to win many games. You dont have to always "give up an out" when bunting. Nobody is against bunting. Mostly it is bunting in the early innings or more specifically the non-close and late instances. Bunting close and late can have some benefit as can bunting early if you don't do it very often. It is mainly the Sac bunting that people hate and Gomez trying to bunt for a hit because he does it to often. It needs to be a surprise.
  11. I do have a hard time figuring out what made Melvin hire him. They don't seem to be on the same page, like he and Yost were in the early days. I think is the biggest problem I have with Macha. I don't know of a better way to put it. Melvin and Macha don't seem like they are on the same page. I personally would like to see the Brewers be the first MLB team to implement NFL type coaching. Hitting coach is your offensive coordinator and sets the lineup. Pitching coach is the defensive coordinator and handles the bullpen. Manager oversees the whole deal, telling his coordinators what type of general plan he'd like to use against given opponents. Macha 2009 handling the pen and Yost handling the daily lineups would be ok with me. Macha doesn't seem to distribute playing time the way I like.
  12. He was offered back of the rotation starters for Hardy after he held onto him too long. It also sounded like he was only offered relievers for Hardy the previous year.
  13. Apparently the study must have missed this http://images.yuku.com/image/jpeg/f7f153628c2984cf93f074d28a06f6286aad839.jpg
  14. His firing in inevitable, its only a matter of when. As Russ pointed out, that is true of all managers. They are hired to be fired.
  15. I agree with that. Many of the things Yost was disliked for we are seeing Macha doing much the same thing. I forget which season it was but there were some who thought Yost was doing a better job managing the pen one year until about the middle of May, then the pen started to fail and he was called an idiot again. If the bullpen fails you look like an idiot. I doubt Macha would look half as bad right now if Hawkins and Hoffman are pitching better. The grass is always greener... Familiarity breeds contempt.
  16. could this New York based Nielsen Co. be in cahoots with the Yankees? No because then the Red Sox would be #1.
  17. I guess my push is more into not having an absolute belief in anything, as nothing is always the case, and quotes like those above take analysis that leans one way and try to make a theory into an absolute truth that the theory isn't even claiming. It is almost never stated as an absolute. If you are looking at a player's stats over the course of an entire season the yes, "strikeouts don't matter." Once you start talking about certain situations of course strikeouts matter. I really don't recall anybody saying bunting is always a bad idea either. It is generally bad strategy and used to much but not always. Yeah but Torres was a pretty effective closer for that year. The last thing we need is another year where we have a Turnbow/Gagne-like implosion and we are scrambling to find a back end solution Torres was pretty effective that year and that is exactly my point. All you really need for a closer is an above average reliever who will not walk a lot of guys. You don't need an elite pitcher. Instead of the $7.5M spent on Hoffman we could have signed Matt Capps(well maybe not Matt Capps in particular given his history with some of the Brewers players) and another solid reliever and picked whoever was pitching well as the closer. All spending lost of money does is lock you into a guy for longer than necessary. I would rather have a few solid guys than one elite guy as the elite guys are not necessarily leaps and bounds better talent wise. Look at the Twins as an example this year. They seem to be doing fairly well without Nathan. Sorry to go so far off topic.
  18. If that is the lineup it sucks. I know lineups don't' amount to much over the course of a season so any one game is pretty meaningless but why the heck is Gomez #2 and Counsell #6 when Macha somehow thought Counsell should be #2 with Edmonds #6 just a couple days ago? I guess #2 is the fast guy who can bunt spot in the order. Ugh.
  19. The disagreement comes with estimating how much more that run saved is worth. I think part of the disagreement also comes from the difference between an average reliever and an elite one. I think it is very difficult to determine in any given year considering the up and down nature of most relievers. A lot of times a guy will be considered an elite reliever even though he may not be.
  20. let's check these past few years to see how difficult it is to win without a solid closer We went to the playoffs with a replacement closer in Torres. Bush who is decent when healthy but not consistent Almost all pitchers are inconsistent. The only ones who are not are Cy Young candidates.
  21. I honestly wasn't to happy with this offseason. Davis and Hawkins were bland signings that I really didn't disapprove of, although I thought the Davis signing would spell the end of Suppan in the rotation. My fault, I completely overestimated Macha. Davis filled a need and isn't really expensive. Ditto for Hawkins though we could have just went with Braddock or Axford. The Wolf signing was ok but for a little to much money. At least it is only 3 years and at no point should really be to much of a burden. Hated the Hardy trade. Gomez is redundant but I can see how teams would be interested in his potential. I would have rather just gone with Gerut in CF. I didn't like the Hoffman deal either. We signed him before the market shook out and ended up paying way to much. Zaun bought some service time but he is only a small upgrade over Kendall. Not one move that I was more than lukewarm about. Of course I really don't want Melvin fired either. Things could easily be much worse.
