  1. Was that the game where a fight broke out in the last few minutes?
  2. And that cultivated a great relationship. As good or better than I would have expected with Boras as an agent.
  3. Not a big deal. Fielder was renewed every year.
  4. It won't hurt but the area where you lose the nail will be tender. I lost my pinky nail once and it took a long time to look normal again. Several months. I was a week before my nail fell off after I hit it. By the way, when it is hanging half off don't go up to your wife and say "hey honey look at how my nail is just barely hanging on." She will think it is gross.
  5. To me, this would be like putting men's slow-pitch-with-keg-on-second-base softball in the Olympics. Or better yet, bumper curling. I think those 2 sports would draw my interest more than anything they currently have in the Olympics. Frankly I find the Olympics pretty boring and uninteresting. The only sport I have any interest in watching is hockey. I have zero interest in the NHL but I like Olympic hockey.
  6. McGehee's numbers are worse or comparable to how Escobar hit in the minors the last 2 years. He doesn't play a defensive premium position with the potential to have elite defense like Escobar.
  7. To me, those OPSse are just ok for an up the middle guy. Those are not numbers you want to see out of a corner guy, especially in the minors.
  8. I did the Fangraphs projection thing and came up with these numbers and I think they are at least a little optimistic. player/AVG/OBP/SLG/OPS/wOBA Gomez .271/.329/.384/.713/.320 Escobar .290/.326/.361/.687/.310 So I guess I have Gomez in everything except average. They really are so close though that I wouldn't put money on either one outhitting the other. I might give the edge to Gomez in WAR since I think right now he has plus defense and I am guessing a little over average on Escobar. Of course Escobar may have the higher WAR if Macha actually starts using his bench. I think Gomez could lose playing time to Gerut driving his WAR down.
  9. I don't expect McGehee to be the Brewers long term solution at 3B, but if he plays well all this season at 3B and Gamel stays in AAA, I'm not going to cry about it. Who has a problem with Gamel in AAA all season if McGehee plays well? I am certainly not going to "cry about it." If after a couple months in McGehee is hitting like many expect instead of how he hit last year and Gamel is raking in AAA, then I have a problem with McGehee at 3B. Right now I prefer Gamel but I fully expect McGehee to be the opening day starter at 3B.
  10. Who do you think will put up a better BA, OBP, SLG, OPS and wOBA. I have been thinking about this a bit and still have not formed a solid opinion. Off the top of my head I would say Escobar will hit better. If you ask me tomorrow I might have a different opinion than today as there is a lot to suggest Gomez could have a good year.
  11. Obviously everybody is entitled to their opinion. I just think it is off base to say the anybody who doesn't think McGehee should start over Gamel or that McGehee isn't likely to hit like he did last year is showing favoritism to "their guys." Talking to your average baseball fan I think you might be right.(Of course the average baseball fan would probably pick McGehee.) You may get that feeling but there is plenty to suggest last year won't happen again or the chance it does is pretty small. I tend to give the posters the benefit of the doubt on their analysis being at least mostly objective. That doesn't mean we will come to the same opinion. I am. I still don't get why the Twins didn't send Gomez down last year. Just to clarify, I am assuming you mean Gerut starting over Gomez.
  12. He isn't hurt now. He should be ready to start the season.
  13. Because he was stuck behind Aramis Ramirez, he got 3 years at AAA to hone his skills. He wasn't "stuck" behind Ramirez. McGehee hardly hit in the minors. There was little reason to expect him to be a starter. Iribarren for example put up number better than McGehee's best year in the minors and we don't expect him to be anything more than a bench player if that. People on this site tend to get married to "their guys", and seem to be against anyone from outside the organization getting an opportunity, or even seeing them outplay their heralded Brewers system "up & comers." Why isn't there a big outcry for Cain or Schaefer then? Gomez has stunk in his time in the Majors. There are people who think we could have filled CF in with Cain and Gerut(myself included) and made a better deal with Hardy but nobody is calling for anybody to start ahead of Gomez. Like Ender said, the projections for McGehee are pretty low. Many people just think Gamel could do better.
  14. You are right, it is probably much less that $2M.
  15. More information. Link
  16. I doubt it. The Cubs won the division with 100 wins. Gallardo may have pushed us to 92. Then there is the fact that if we were doing that well, CC probably doesn't start every 4th day so that knocks us back down to 90.
  17. I won't say that Fielder doesn't provide some revenue, but I think keeping the team competitive would generate more revenue than one marque player. Fielder may be the difference between having a $83M payroll and $85M.
  18. Here is a list of places to try on Beer Advocate. Link They do a feature on a city every month in the Beer Advocate magazine and Phoenix was their featured city in issue #35. December issue I think.
  19. Putting the Red Sox or Yankees in the central would make it so they are both division winners and open up the possibility for other AL teams to win the wild card. Right now the Yankees and Sox are the 2 best teams in the AL year after year pretty much eliminating the opportunity for the rest of the the teams in the AL East to have a chance at the playoffs except on very rare occasions. If Detroit ever got their act together that would pretty much mean you have no chance at getting to the playoffs in the AL unless you are in the AL West.
  20. Fielder likely isn't a $20m player in this market, closer to $18m. Now $12m over 6 years isn't that much but no reason to overpay a good 9 months before you need to really do anything. I am definitely on board if we can get Fielder for $15M a year or less. It is when the money gets up over that and pushes to $20M that I don't like. I agree that we have to wait and see where Pujols and Maur sign. I still think Fielder will be one of the top FA's and those guys have still been getting paid very well in FA. The middle guys are the ones who don't get big contracts anymore. I would still be shocked if Fielder doesn't test free agency. My guess is that Fielder will get $15M or there about in arbitration next year. I doubt he would accept a contract for less than that on a yearly basis.
  21. THT has a nice xBABIP calculator. It downloads as an Excel file. I am sure is isn't perfect but it is somewhere to start. I have used it for a few guys this winter. Off the top of my head here are a few. Lopez .330 Gomez .300(ish don't remember exactly) McGehee .305
  22. I ran across this today while reading an article over at THT. It is a compilation of links to articles about sabermetrics. The first link in particular I thought was very interesting. Probability vs. Certainty. I think these exerts were pretty good.
  23. The first 13 minutes of the Men's Hockey game was the most dominant 13 minutes of hockey I have ever watched. Wow, they even had the other team's goalie pull himself.
  24. I would prefer Counsell as a backup. Lopez has been a pretty poor defender for much of his career and we absolutely horrid at SS. If we needed a 2B I would prefer Lopez. I think Counsell's performance would drop of dramatically if he had to start 5+ games a week.
  25. His defense last year was not respectable. It was really poor. I think his knee affected that and he will probably play average defense this year. I disagree. When Gamel got his chances to start, he hit very well and actually played better defense than McGehee. I think Gamel will get his chance to start if McGehee plays poorly for the first couple months. I think Gamel will get a chance even if McGehee is average as long as Gamel is raking in AAA and isn't horrendous on defense. I don't want McGehee to play poorly because it will hurt the Brewers. On the other hand, I think he will. I think it is a fair comparison. His swing may be better, but he hit for a lot more power than at any point in the minors and had an inflated BABIP for a guy with his speed even with his LD%. I agree that calling him overweight wouldn't be fair. Of course there will be people jumping on him for being a one year wonder if he plays poorly. We have a whole range of posters here. There are also posters here who don't think he will hit well who won't jump on him for being a one year wonder after even a few months because they understand sample size.
