  1. I didn't really like Witrado's choice of words. Screwing is a word I would expect to be used on a message board, not by professional writer. That is unless that writer's job is to review porn. From previous interviews with Macha, it sounded like Gamel had a real chance to make the team. If that is true, shame on Melvin.
  2. He is getting service time while on the DL though. That was the whole issue with him sitting the bench. This is no better, actually worse since at least on the bench he would make an occasional contribution.
  3. How many time zones did each team have to travel through?
  4. Nose around here and see what you find.
  5. No it wouldn't be reasonable to expect them to lose but would it really be very surprising if they did?
  6. 5 games for a starting pitcher is like a position player getting one game. Not really a big deal.
  7. Wisconsin losing in the first round wouldn't be a big surprise. I could also see them making it to the championship game. They have been up and down all year. They beat a good team and you want to start making an argument for them being in the top 10 then they would lay an egg.
  8. I hope you are wrong. I am afraid you are probably right. This is probably similar to the situation with Gallardo a couple years back when he hurt his knee(?) in spring training and missed a few weeks to start the season. At least when Gamel comes back they can send him right down to AAA to get back into playing shape.
  9. Just to make things perfectly clear(or at least clearer) I would go with Rotation Gallardo Wolf Bush Davis Parra Bullpen Hoffman Hawkins Coffey Narveson Suppan Stetter Vargas Villanueva goes to AAA. We will need at least 7 starting pitchers. Probably more like 9. Suppan isn't good but we have no clear better options in AAA. Our AAA starting pitching options are at best unknowns and at worst completely suck. This sacrifices nothing for our future and maintains our depth. Suppan is probably a 5.00-5.50 ERA pitcher. Parra and Bush are probably 4.25-5.50. At worst I think those 2 are worse than Suppan but they have the potential to be much much better. Yes cutting Bush saves us some money but we would have to just put that money back into a pitcher mid season anyway. If we have a couple minor league pitchers show they can pitch well, then cut Suppan midseason.
  10. It doesn't hurt the team unless he makes the team over somebody clearly better. We don't have a pitcher who fits that description.
  11. Never played a full season in the bigs. Career .242 hitter, he can't steal a base, and has a fielding % of .972 Career .349/.421/.771. UZR has him about average as a corner outfielder. Minor league splits Total Zone seems to indicate a little below average.
  12. Heck, there are still free agents out there that could be had on a minor league deal that are better than Suppan. We have to pay Suppan either way. Signing one of those guys would be extra money.
  13. Parra's late season slump in 2008 happened about the time he increased his innings by more than 20 over the previous year. Several posters though he would start to decline around that time. Villanueva can go down to AAA and pitch since he has options left. Stetter as well. We can easily keep Suppan in the pen and not lose anybody. With Hoffman, Hawkins, Vargas and Coffey in the pen the only innings left are mop up and long man innings. Cutting Bush is really the only thing that would really irritate me. As long as Bush is kept, he will get a chance to start. Even Suppan in the starting rotation will not be to bad as long as they don't keep letting him make starts if he is ineffective.
  14. The only shocking thing is that you picked Escobar instead of Gomez.
  15. I read another poster allude to a possible BABIP improvement in Suppan just because of the improved middle defense (Weeks > Lopez; Escobar > Hardy; Gomez > Cameron). That poster made a mistake. We got +14 runs UZR at the 2B postion last year. That led the league. There is almost no way Weeks matches that. Yes Weeks has made some improvements on defense but I doubt he is an elite defender at 2B. We got +6.7 runs UZR in a partial season out of JJ.(8.8 UZR/150) That is well above average on defense. Escobar needs to become more consistent for his defense to be that good. We got about +4.5 runs at SS. I assume average for Escobar as of right now. I will agree that Gomez is a better defender than Cameron in CF. That isn't much improvement there either though since Cameron was an above average defender. We didn't replace Podsednik out in CF. Overall I think we probably lost a win on defense up the middle.(lost a win win at 2B assuming Weeks can be better than average, lost half a win at SS or best case scenario break even, gained half a win at CF)
  16. The VW commercials, still. It is "slug bug" not slug VW morons.
  17. Look back at what I posted before. I have not changed my mind on any of our hitters. Zaun would make a good 2 hitter against RHP and Hart against LHP. Spring training stats should be mostly ignored.
  18. The MLB online shop is having a buy one get on 40% off sale.
  19. A few good games against pitchers working on their stuff and TH saying Escobar is making a push? Not enough to change my mind at all.
  20. http://images.yuku.com/image/jpeg/b43358ae66b180862d1487aec8307fd0a848f70.jpg I think this might be Hart's new prescription glasses. Sent to me by my mom. It was taken on Saturday.
  21. Yeah, I was just thinking about that as well. I wonder if he's no longer considered a "lock" for the pen. As far as Macha's comments regarding Suppan, hopefully he is just trying not to throw one of his players "under the bus." How has Stetter been used though? We should expect him to get lit up if he was pitching to righties. Why would Macha stop throwing players under the bus now? He did it all of last year. Is this a kinder gentler Macha? or does he only throw young players under the bus. I get the feeling Macha isn't a good manager for younger players.
  22. Please please please don't make Gamel a bench player. I am sickened by the thought that they were even considering it. I am of course assuming McGehee had the starting job wrapped up before camp. My hope is for one of 2 things to happen. McGehe plays well or if he doesn't(not wishing he plays poorly) they bring up Gamel to start after a couple months.
  23. Here is McCalvy's take on it so far. In my opinion one or maybe both of Villanueva and Stetter will be sent down because they have options. We will need at least 7 starters for the year and probably closer to 9. 1 team, and I an surprised there was one, made it through a season with only 5 pitchers between 1998 and 2008. Link 2009 season in parenthesis. Stashing the 2 who don't make the rotation makes the most sense to me. We don't have to lose pitchers. Getting rid of Bush makes little sense. We are not likely to get a pitcher as good for the meager money we would save and he will be needed at some point.
  24. However, does Soup have any value out of the 'pen? He will not likely earn his contract in any way this year. I think most would agree on that. As the long man he would get low leverage situations and be ready to start when needed. I think Bush is the better pitcher but the difference, especially over a partial season, is minor. If Stetter was to go down I think that would mean Riske is healthy or Schoenwise makes the team. I would hate to see Narveson or Parra as the LOOGY since I think it would be a detriment when we would need them to start again. It would be nice is some of our starting candidates would have options. Sadly they do not.
  25. If you read the JS blogs TH mentions that Melvin couldn't comment on it even if they did.
