  1. I wouldn't be to upset is Narveson gets the 5th spot instead of Parra.(yup I am blocking the possibility of Suppan getting the 5th spot out of my mind) I am a little leery of a guy who has only put up a good September and a good spring though.
  2. Leaves your pen short for the days before and after those games. It would work well in the playoffs and after rosters expand though.
  3. I know it is wrong and I usually don't wish bad things on any of our players but I really want Suppan to pitch poorly today and Parra to have a really good day.
  4. Our best outfield setup may be Braun, Gerut, and Hart/Edmonds platoon. Gomez to AAA.
  5. Bush and Parra in the rotation would restore some faith in Macha. Suppan in the rotation, barring injury, would push Macha past the point of no return.
  6. Logan, Villy has an option left. He doesn't have to go through waivers to get sent to AAA. It's that simple given his ML service time. If it were anything other than that, we'd be hearing that regularly in all the beat writers' discussions & analyses of the pitching permutations, combinations, and conundrums. He does have to go through waivers. It is 3 or more years since he made his MLB debut. He would have to go through Optional Waivers much like Bush did last year or the previous year. If a team claims him, we can just pull him back so all it would do is mess with our roster management. According to our 40-man roster page on BF.net, Villy has 2 options left. I am not sure if that is up to date though. The beat writers rarely mentioned Villanueva as a possibility of going down until very recently. I think as recently as last week Villanueva was mentioned as somebody who had a really good chance of making the team. Per Cot's My guess is that the disappointment Macha was talking about is Villy and they are just waiting for him to clear waivers to say anything.
  7. Edmonds in CF wouldn't be bad if we didn't have a better option in Gerut on the team already. Platooning Edmonds with Hart would probably be our best OF setup. Sounds like Edmonds made the team. At least according to Tim Kurkjian. He apparently accepted with no promises about playing time.
  8. Villavueva would have to pass through optional waivers if we want to send him down. We can pull him back so we have little chance of losing him but other teams could mess with our roster management.
  9. What impact will Rick Petersen have on the many arms that struggled last year? None, they were likely to get better anyway. I will go with 84 wins.
  10. I was reading the transcript of Witrado's chat from today and found this amusing nugget. Luckily I wasn't drinking or I would have shot liquid out my nose. We get much better minor league coverage here and he is overlooking McCalvy for the MLB club.(probably purposely since they are somewhat in competition) I trust almost nothing TH has to say about our minor leaguers.
  11. TH has the roster all lined up how he thinks it will shake out. I threw up a little in my mouth when I read this part. I completely disagree the bolded part should make any difference. Of Suppan and Bush whoever ends up in the bullpen is likely to get the "I pitch once a week" job. I think Bush is a pitcher in the 4.25-5.00 ERA range and Suppan in the 5.00-5.50 ERA range. In my opinion Suppan over Bush in the rotation to start the season makes any bad decision Yost made look rather small in comparison.
  12. It seems like you have made up your mind and continue to use stats mostly out of the players control to make your argument. If you had a more open mind this might be an interesting discussion.
  13. First, CC's .350 OB isnt't the problem...it's his lack of a suitable total of RBIs and RUNs when you reach base that often. The blame for that falls on the hitters behind and ahead of CC. He has little control over hitting RBI's if nobody is on base and little control if nobody behind him is hitting.
  14. You get the feeling Suppan is going to end up in the rotation. Hopefully TH just misspoke when he blogged this[/url]. When Macha came over we were led to believe that he was good with young players. I completely disagree at this point. He doesn't take the Sabermetric thing to far, he missuses it. It gets something in his head and then finds numbers that appear to back it up what he is saying. Look at THT's analysis of how he presented the numbers on Gomez earlier in spring training. Few people who like the sabermetric part of baseball would just drop the run altogether. They would be more selective with who they let steal. I think Macha is a control freak.
  15. This article was linked in BCB today. Not sure if there is any other way to interpret it. I would like to believe that Witrado took things out of context or exaggerated them but since the start Edmonds has sort of given us the impression he wanted at least all the at bats against RHP.
  16. Going from Cameron to Gomez is a big hit in OBP even if Gomez hits his projections. The backup CF from last year flat out sucked so yes we could get similar OBP at the CF position. Just so I don't make that same mistake again. 2009 splits C .242/.331/.317/.648 1B .299/.412/.602/1.014 2B .303/.377/.474/.851 SS ..247/.306/.355/.661 3B .267/.330/.439/.769 LF .309/.373/.530/.902 CF .241/.329/.432/.761 RF .270/.340/.425/.765
  17. The Brewers lost a lot of OBP by going to Gomez instead of Cameron as well.
  18. I would like to see some specif references if you are going to say that somebody wants Suppan in the starting rotation if all our pitchers are healthy. Ender is the only one who comes to mind but his preference if I recall was only if Parra kept walking guys.
  19. Last, I read this entire thread, and I can say with 100% confidence that EVERYone here is NOT entirely united on the Suppan front. All but maybe one or two would prefer Suppan out of the rotation barring injury. Other than that, it is arguing over where he fits in the pecking order. 10 runs is generally considered one win. A 3.00 ERA pitcher gives up 60 runs over 180 innings. A 5.00 ERA pitcher gives up 100 runs over 180 innings. 100-60=40 40/10=4
  20. I don't think anybody is putting Suppan in the rotation without injuries to at least 1 or 2 other pitchers except for maybe Macha. 4 wins would be a drastic difference in pitchers. A 3.00 ERA vs 5.00 ERA pitcher over 180 innings. A 4.50 ERA starter would be roughly league average or close to it, not horrible. NL - 4.32 ERA/AL - 4.63 ERA/MLB - 4.46 ERA The argument is really Suppan vs Villanueva in the pen as the long man and where Suppan fits in the pecking order for the 6th+ starter spots. At least for us message board guys. Suppan may be in the discussion for the rotation in Macha's mind. In that case I think his mind is warped.
  21. The upgrade at catcher and RF is probably pretty small. Hart wasn't as bad as made out to be in 2009. I don't expect him to be much better. The upgrade at catcher is somewhat lessened by the fact that Zaun will probably only catch around 100 games and the backup is probably not going to hit as well as Kendall. Braun may match his OPS from 2009, in fact I think he will, but I see him doing it with a much lower OBP which will be less valuable.
  22. I think Macha will play him in CF quite a bit which I have posted previously. Just like he played Kendall almost every day at catcher.
  23. Good for Mauer. If that's what Fielder wants, forget it. Like others have pointed out, we are not in the Twins league as far as owner money or market size.
