  1. I think there were jokes about making sandwiches between his pitches. I wish I remembered what the thread was because it was pretty funny.
  2. I am glad he didn't overpay to take this team from 82 wins to 84 wins or whatever. I really think this is the most important point. Even Halladay would likely have been a 2 win improvement at most unless he was acquired in early July. We are in a pretty similar position to where the Astros were last year. Close enough to think we are in it, but realistically pretty far back and behind a lot of teams. The Astros gave up prospects to miss out on the playoffs.
  3. I would say only CC makes much sense. I don't think he will have good enough numbers to be a type A or B free agent so we wouldn't lose comp picks. Hoffman and Cameron probably at the very least bring back comp picks if we can't resign them.
  4. A winner has been chosen. The die has been cast.
  5. Holy crap what a turn around. I thought we were done this inning after 2 outs and now we lead by 5, nope now 6.
  6. If we are out of it keeping Counsell does not help at all. Flipping him for a month and a half for anybody is a plus especially since he is likely to just come back to us anyway. Just go to CC and say "We are going to try to get you on a winner and hope you come back after the season. We really like you, but we are gong nowhere this year."
  7. How is this? http://www.runemasterstudios.com/graemlins/images/doh2.gif
  8. If Washburn came over and pitched 100 innings for us he would add one win per run of ERA over those 100 innings. So if he came over and pitched a 4.00 ERA instead of the 6.30 Burns has put up that would add about 2 wins. That is assuming Burns is who he would replace. If we did acquire a pitcher they are likely to only pitch about 80 innings for us.
  9. Why should we act like the Astros do almost every year and trade off minor leaguers on the off hand chance our team will play well in August? It makes little sense to trade for anybody unless they will help us next year as well. Coupled with the fact that we would probably have to overpay for pitching right now and I think it is better to wait to trade until the offseason.
  10. I think they need to be careful on a game to game basis and be watchful for a drop in velocity or loss of control. I am not sure how many innings Gallardo can go this year, but I feel it is not 200 and probably closer to 160. I have little to base this off of. 160 is somewhat arbitrary. If we are not in contention when Gallardo gets up around 160+ I think they should be very careful. We may already be pushing Gallardo to much. His walks are up by almost 1 1/2 per 9 over any other point in his career.
  11. Castro is doing a good job. We have bad pitchers.
  12. Riggleman went to the home plate umpire to argue that he thought a called third strike was a foul ball. He asked the umpire to get help from the third base ump. He wouldn't so Riggleman went over to talk to the third base umpire. Riggleman started to talk to the third base umpire but the third base umpire didn't say anything and looked over Rigglemans shoulder at the home plate umpire. Riggleman turned back to the home plate ump, the home plate ump threw him out.
  13. I find all this hard to believe. Manny Ramirez would never use steroids.
  14. The first time I saw him it was kind of cool. Now I wish he would just go away. Any idiot with spare time could imitate player batting stances.
  15. Sounds like she may have overreacted. Not that I can blame her though. I also agree that she sounds a little full of herself as well.
  16. I'm entering this discussion quite late, but I tend to side with Ajay. OPS is a solid, useful stat, but I can't buy into as a perfectly accurate gauge of the degree to which someone is a "good" hitter because OPS is so skewed by power. If you read the previous post it was focused on OBP, not OPS. Take a screwy but legit example like Tony Gwynn (Sr.) & Russell Branyan: .847 career OPS for Gwynn vs. .826 for Branyan. Branyan gets a lotta love on this site, but could you realistically argue that Branyan's almost as good a hitter as Sr. Gwynn because they're only 21 pts. apart for career OPS? I have a feeling that plenty of OPS-biased folks could almost start believing that foolish notion to be true. Our discussion used all the slash stats. If I was looking at Gwynn vs Branyan I would be looking at OBP/SLG/OPS not just OPS. I rarely look at OPS without looking at the other 2. I highly doubt anybody would use only OPS to argue who was a better hitter especially when 1 point of OBP is considered to be worth 1.8-2 points of SLG. OPS is quick and a little dirty, but generally pretty accurate and easy to calculate. I would prefer wOBA.
  17. I think the most important thing is getting on base ahead of Braun and Fielder. BA isn't anywhere near as important as OBP. We currently have 4 guys at the top of our lineup hitting .300 or over. I don't think you will find to many teams like that. Hardy under performing, Kendall being Kendall, and Hart teasing us with talent are hurting us a bit. I am not sure how a "professional hitter" would help since he would more than likely be a worse overall hitter. To answer your question, no, I don't think we need a different type of hitter. We need good hitters with decent OBP. Doesn't matter if they hit or walk for that OBP.
  18. You could really say that any team's statistics are brought up by their superstars. Cardinals/Pujols for example. Other than Kendall, we have pretty good hitters through the whole lineup. Almost all players are streaky except for maybe the superstars. Our overall offensive stats include Hardy playing a lot of games at a very low level and including Kendall in our lineup a lot. Really outside of Kendall, all of our hitters are pretty solid.(maybe Hart, not sure what we have with him)
  19. I am going to go out on a limb here and say that I don't think BUC is actually blaming Macha for the team playing poorly. What he is saying is that the poeple who were complaining about Yost last year, should be equally upset with Macha this year. I think.
  20. I have 2 reserved ticket vouchers for the 2009 regular season. I am not going to use them so I figured I would give them away. I believe they can be redeemed at the ticket office for 2 reserved seats to a T-Rats game. Anybody interested either post here or PM me. On Friday I will draw from all the replies and give both to one person.
  21. Not Kenny's fault. I agree with this. I am not saying I think Macha is a good manager. Then again I don't think there is a good manager in MLB. If DM went into this season thinking: if they are playing well and in contention in July, I can pull the trigger on Peavy and set us up just like last year. I think that is exactly what DM was thinking. Our team was set up pretty well for this year. We just had more injuries this year when last year we were relatively healthy.
  22. how many more wins does a 2.65 pitcher win over a 1.65 pitcher. One win over 100 innings(11.1 runs), 2 wins over 200 innings(22.2 runs). (innings/9*(era1-era2)) At this point, I miss the vent thread. If it could be made into a place where people are allowed to just make these kinds of venting posts without allowing others to correct erroneous assertions, it would seem preferable to the same types of comments surfacing in numerous other threads. I disagree. The vent thread didn't serve its purpose at all. Vent posts spilled over into the regular threads anyway. I think it also attracted posters who wanted to vent and then decided to vent in other threads as well.
  23. The statement about our offense seems pretty illogical. We are 6th in the NL in OBP, 3rd in SLG and 4th in OPS. The offense is not the problem. Our pitching on the other hand sucks.
  24. The only way Jack Z was able to acquire pitching was by switching teams.
  25. I think there is almost no way Macha comes back next year without an extension.
