  1. Do others here think that the same old coaching staff plays a decent part in why there has been little to no progression from our team and many of its key players? None whatsoever. The coaches are fine. The players have played poorly and I don't think that is a reflection of the coaches at all. Time and again we have fired coaches without showing any change in the players. Timely hitting and cutting down on strikeouts has been stressed for several years now. Things may change when players change. Counsell is also benefiting from playing in favorable match ups. Almost any MLB player will perform better with a favorable match up.
  2. I advocate doing noting. Even if we were to sell, Hoffman and Cameron would be good guys to hold onto. Hoffman should at the very least bring back a sandwich pick. Keeping Cameron at worst probably brings back a pick, at best keeps him on good terms with us and allows us to bring him back for another year.
  3. I wouldn't be surprised if Macha doesn't return for next year. I also wouldn't be surprised if he gets an extension. Changing managers for next year isn't going to make us better, just like it more than likely didn't make us better for this year.
  4. Well, Parra tired out almost exactly at 30 extra innings last year.
  5. I was laughing like a maniac at the bolded part. I just remember how much it chapped people's hide last year when Yost said things like that. Macha, Yost, whoever, if they have MLB experience they are going to do things like this. As long as Melvin is doing the hiring or the hiring of a manager is limited to a "baseball guy," we are going to get pretty similar results/responses.
  6. This is the kind of game I expected out of Yost and it is sad to see Macha pull the same crap. Are you really surprised that Macha would do the same things Yost did?
  7. Weeks makes fantastic plays also. My guess is that we have not watched enough of Lopez to get a good feel for his defense yet.
  8. There are way fewer little league games in a year than games in a MLB season. They are not comparable at all.
  9. Why should we save him for the Yankee's or Angels benefit? I am worried about his health next year and all the years we have him. I don't think people would be making an issue if this was Gallardo's last year with us.
  10. Even if Davis could come in and be our 2nd best pitcher, it would be a very bad idea to trade a top prospect for him. He is a marginal upgrade over what we already have and wouldn't be anywhere near enough to get us into the playoffs this year. There is zero reason to trade for the guy unless we can get him really cheap. Davis is probably about a little over a win better than Burns over the rest of the year. I have no problem trying to trade for him. He is an upgrade over our worst pitcher. It would just be very dumb to give up Gamel or any of our other top prospects to get him. I wouldn't even give up Green for him. And Taylor Green isn't going to be a bad choice at third base, either. Gamel is far less of a loss to the Brewers than Escobar would be. Even if Taylor Green is a good player, Gamel will probably be better. Gamel can easily move to another position if Green turns out to be a good player.
  11. Escobar Lopez Braun Fielder McGehee Cameron Hart Kendall I think there is a good chance that Escobar may be a good hitter in the future, but seeing him leadoff this year would be almost as disappointing as seeing Kendall up there.. Any trade of Gamel, Escobar or any of our current MLB starters for anything other than a top of the line pitcher would be a huge disappointment.
  12. It's also pretty safe to say that Doug Davis WOULD be the second-best starter in the rotation as it is presently constituted. I don't think that is safe to say at all. The way he has pitched would make him the 2nd best starter in our rotation, but to think he will keep that up is pretty wishful thinking. He is probably a tick better than Suppan and maybe Looper. I would expect Parra to out-pitch Davis for the rest of the season. We are not a pitcher of Doug Davis quality away from the playoffs. Giving up a top prospect for a mediocre pitcher would be the first step to getting DM fired, and rightfully so.
  13. Weeks' has had issues in the past recovering from a torn sheath in his wrist. He didn't have issues recovering. When he hurt his wrist in 2006, they said it would take a year to completely heal. My guess is that Weeks starts off a little slow and isn't fully recovered until Late May.
  14. If our GM is making trade decisions while counting on players to perform at the level CC did last year, he should be fired right now.
  15. Teams are streaky over the course of the season. Picking any arbitrary dates is going to show a winning or losing record and may or may not mean anything. You would probably find a similar W-L record even if Weeks or Bush had not been injured. I am not saying we are better off without them, I think we are worse, just that trying to look at the record and try making any definitive link between the two is probably tells us very little. Link
  16. I had a Mallrats reference that would go great here. Not sure it is really appropriate for this board though.
  17. Giving this a bump because I came across a fun toy when looking through my bookmarks today. Link It is probably more useful than the basic chart I posted on the last page because it calculates win probabilities added or lost between situations.
  18. I just hope it isn't a sprained elbow which leads to a tired arm during the rehab and Tommy Jonh in the off season.
  19. If you can't give GM's credit for what they achieve because the results don't match models I think you're putting too much faith in the models. Are you saying that we should give a GM credit if players perform well? I will not give Melvin credit for the unbelievable 2nd half CC had. CC performed way beyond reasonable expectations.
  20. Bats hibernate during the day because they are nocturnal creatures. I was going to say bat gnomes but I think you are on to something.
  21. I have no problem with Melvin. My issue is with Macha's ineptitude. It makes me yearn for the days of Garner or Yost. I see 0% chance of Macha being extended for a 3rd season Well, I would have to say that one of 2 things happen. Macha is either fired this offseason or extended. Managers don't typically manage till the end of their contract with a lame duck status.
  22. The outside meat tends to get dry if it sits long. That is why it is usually good at bar time. The outside dry meat is cut off unless you are first in line.
  23. I never really liked the coin flip analogy. I always preferred to think of baseball players more like 20 sided dice. For a .300 hitter their normal performance would be a 1-6 being a hit. They have up days where maybe a 1-8 gets them a hit or down days where a 1-4 gets them a hit. Still a very crude way to look at things given all the variables that go into hitting.
