  1. Their cost on the free agent market would be dramatically different as well. I would expect an Overbay type player to have less risk going forward because of his physique as well.
  2. The defensive metrics only include fielding(I believe). They don't take into account scooping balls out of the dirt or saving errors on errant throws. With an infield that had all average or better fielders it wouldn't be much of an issue. However, we have Weeks at 2B and Hall/Lamb at 3B(I know Hall is solid for the most part). Hall and Weeks are prone to making bad throws that an average or better 1B could catch and make our overall infield defense better. As it is, Fielder just compounds the problem. How much is tough to sort out. That isn't to say he has negative value, but he has to hit very well to make up for his defense and why many people feel that an average hitter who could play good defense would be almost as good as having Prince at 1B.(and likely come much cheaper) We have Prince for right now and I am ok with that.
  3. My wife recommends the New Glarus Coffee Stout. She liked it as much as the Road Slush oatmeal stout it replaced. Has anybody found the New Glarus Crack'd Wheat yet? Last time I was at the liquor store I was talking to the owner and he called his distributor to ask about it. His distributor, out of Madison no less, had not even heard about it yet.
  4. I still think it was a shame that Sheets didn't get a full standing ovation as he walked off the field after what was potentially his last start as a Brewer at Miller Park this past year. How did we know it was his last start though? We thought there was a good chance he would be back but didn't find out he wouldn't until later.
  5. Bill Hall is clutch too. I will enjoy my next 3 years of watching Prince and being annoyed when Tubby(my nickname for him) makes his fielding mistakes. If we had a suitable replacement ready to step in, I would love to see him gone. Who cares about his contract comments? His defense is so bad it negates much of his offensive contribution.
  6. We have heard that same thing since Prince first came up. He has not gotten any better and maybe even worse on defense. I would love for Prince to come in and improve his defense. I guess in the end, I'll believe it when I see it.
  7. I didn't estimate CC and Sheets at 5 wins each and thought that Gallardo and offensive improvement should make up for the loss of Sheets. I was thinking of starting at 86-87 wins with our only significant loss as CC. 82-83 and we probably pick up a few extra wins with a solid pen.
  8. I think the thinking that he is only a little above average takes his horrendous defense into account. I think 2008 was a down year for Prince. I also think expecting 2007 numbers out him again is unrealistic also. I think he will settle somewhere in between while his already bad defense continues to slide.
  9. Kendall's offense went south badly last year. It went south badly in 2007. He improved slightly in 2008. He was and is going to continue to be below average with the bat.
  10. True, but CC probably over performed more than enough to make up for most of that. He was almost 2 runs a game better than his career ERA and 1 1/2 runs better than his best 2 years. That comes to 2-3 games over 130 innings. We also had a 28-17 record in 1 run games and were 12-8 in extra inning games. We had things break our way. I just don't think that 90 wins is a good starting point if anybody is going to try to estimate wins for 2009.
  11. Our third order wins was 86. I don't know why it is so hard to accept that teams can win fewer or more games than their talent should allow. If we were an 85 win team going into the season, it would be very easy to win between 80 and 90 games. Replaying the same season over and over again would net different results even with exactly the same players on each team.
  12. The whole point is that we won more games than we should have and to think we really had the talent to win 90 games again with that same talent is unrealistic. Yes, I think winning more games than we should have is playing above our heads.
  13. Sabathia played above his ability. We also won more than our share of one run games.
  14. Graffanino was in a similar situation when he eventually accepted arbitration from the Brewers. When was this? In 2006 Graffanino was unranked and would have cost the signing team no picks. In 2007 he was a type B and also would not have cost draft picks.
  15. Unless Tom H knows more about the minors than he does about the majors, I have serious doubts about anything that uses his opinion as a basis for their analysis. If he does know more about the minors, then maybe we should get a competent reporter to cover the MLB team and let him cover the minors. I would love to get more coverage of the minor leagues from our Milwaukee paper.
  16. They didn't win their division by 10 games, but we probably played a little over our heads in 2008. The talent gap is probably close to 10 games. With Harden out they are probably still comfortably better than any other team in the division. 6-7 games instead of 10. It is really easy to play 6 games worse or better than your talent level.
  17. Lawrie isn't much of a surprise. Now that I think about it, it would have been surprising to not see him on a roster. I also hope Gallardo doesn't pitch. Does anybody seriously care about this whole WBC fiasco? The only reason I care is because I don't want to see Brewers get hurt.
  18. Every manager that has ever managed Kendall has played him a lot of games. No catcher should play as much as Kendall did last year. Macha has managed him in the past, so hopefully he has changed his mind about Kendall playing day after night games. I doubt it. He is a below average hitter and blaming playing time for his poor hitting is just ignoring that fact.
  19. The 20% rule only applies to guys who are not eligible for free agency.
  20. Kind of disappointing considering the talent we supposedly have on defense. Here I was at the start of the season talking about how we would have problems scoring goals and the defense shouldn't be a problem. I didn't even watch the game on Saturday and now that I know the score, there is no way I am going to. Hard to get in the habit of watching games when they are show so sporadically.
  21. Not sure if this deal makes much sense. I guess the Phillies get a little break on money, but it doesn't buy out any free agent years. Link Edit: Looks like he is even going to have a year of arbitration left after the contract. I am guessing he is a Super-2 this year.
  22. That would amount to a 6-8 game swing with one of the teams we are likely to be in direct competition with for the Wild Card.
  23. TiVo and Netflix are great for the middle of the night feedings when all that's on is infomercials. Digital camera is also nice for taking millions of pictures without having to pay for the developement of them all. Also great for flooding the relatives in-boxes with baby pics.
  24. Good point. I guess in many peoples' minds player A would appear to go on hot and cold streaks. Hot when he is hitting, cold when he is walking.
  25. Disliking Sheets is one thing, but trying to say we are better off without him is just plain wrong. Whatever innings he is able to pitch there is no way we can come up with 5 guys who are better to cover those innings he could pitch.
