  1. Like we all thought, brutal stretch to start the season. Too bad we couldn't have picked up a win or two in the first 7 games. Still remains to be seen how good we really are.
  2. C-Vill and Hall could be traded in my mind for another 3B or some pitching help. C-Vill is always goint to be a guy in the pen and Hall has reached his peak and time to move on. Carlos Villanueva is a good guy to have around even if he never starts again. You need a few guys like him to stabilize the pen. Unless we can get a full time 3B our best option still looks to be Hall/Branyan. A Hall/Branyan platoon minimizes the hitting weakness of each player. Teahen is Hall hitting from the left side without the dominance of opposite handed pitching. I don't see anything to indicate Teahen would be much better defensively than Hall/Branyan. vs LHP Hall .278/.355/.493/.847 Teahen .249/.308/.394/.702 vs RHP Hall .249/.300/.441/.741 Teahen .276/.342/.433/.775
  3. Thanks for the info. Those are some good deals.
  4. I just don't want to invest the years more so than the money. I have no problem with the $10M per year, but I would much prefer a 2 year deal with an option for the third. I think our bullpen in it's current form is a bunch of solid, but not really much above average guys. We lack a high strikeout guy. A shutdown reliever. If we need an out, who would we call to come in and get that out? I would like a high K, low BB guy to complete our pen. I am just a little leery about investing a long term contract in that kind of guy given the up and down nature of relievers.
  5. If they changed the save stat to 2 runs and eliminated blown saves prior to the 9th inning, it would be much more meaningful. The main reason I don't like putting much money into a closer is because they are not used properly. I doubt that is going to change anytime soon. I am sure somebody can point you to a leverage index that will give you a good idea which points of a game are more important. Quickly glancing back through "The Book", they say that it would be better to bring in your closer in the 8th with a 2 run lead than in the 9th with a 3 run lead. The difference between an ace reliever and an average reliever in the 9th with a 3 run lead is about 2%.
  6. Closer - McClung RHP - Villanueva RHP - Coffey RHP - Dillard LHP - Swindle LHP - Stetter Riske dude, Riske. He was reliable until he got hurt. I am not advocating him as a closer because I think we would benefit more having him as a middle reliever because he can go more than an inning.
  7. For me it is usually after their 2nd or 3rd album. The attitude and feeling of a band usually changes dramatically after that point. Same members, but what originally drew me to a band is different. Obviously there are exceptions to this.
  8. I wouldn't call it insane. $10M per year looks to be the going rate for closers.
  9. The Subaru's look like great cars - but they rate a little low in the fuel economy for my tastes. I'm currently a full-time college student, so I feel a little tight with my money right now. That's the big drawback with all-wheel drive. I have an Impreza and like it quite a bit. I only get 25-27 MPG with it. Of course I have the WRX and the premium fuel at $.20 per gallon more than regular is also a drawback.
  10. Bias implies an inability to be objective.
  11. VS RHP Lowell .277/.340/.459/.799 Branyan .234/.335/.491/.826 VS LHP Lowell .287/.354/.493/.848 Hall .278/.355/.493/.847 I guess I would stick with Hall and Branyan at 3B. It wouldn't cost us players for Hall/Branyan at 3B like Lowell would.
  12. I have tried it 2-3 times and never liked it. It is good in short bursts if there are a quite a few games you want to play, but for me I would play 6 games and then would run out of games I was interested in. If you run a cross a game that will take you more than a couple weeks to play through, you are better off just buying the game. The whole point of Gamefly, to me, was playing a game then flipping it quickly to get my money's worth out of it. It also took almost a week from the time I dropped a game in the mail until I got the next one. So 2 games works well if you don't send one out and have a really bad game at home. Then you are without a game to play. A couple pluses of the service are the discount you get on used games and rewards for keeping your subscription over a long period of time. It is really tough to keep a subscription over the summer when there are lots of hours to watch baseball, stuff to do outside and a mostly F-list of games coming out. The best part about buying the games used from Gamefly is you can rent a game, get it at home and decide to keep it. Try beofre you buy. They send you the box and manual through the mail. I thought the price for 2 games was more like $25 a month with tax. If it was closer to $15 a month I would keep it. At $25 a month that's almost enough to buy a game every other month especially if you look for discounts. I guess the short answer is, if you buy a new game every other week it might be worth it. If you buy 6 or fewer a year, you are about breaking even if you look for discounts or buy used games.
  13. A marginal increase in OBP does not outweigh the huge loss in SLG. All the other stuff is mostly irrelevant.
  14. Best of all, there will be no new demands placed upon you, no new skills to learn, no greater responsibilities to shoulder. Is he trying to say there would be the same amount of pressure in NY that there would be anywhere else? I think there would be a lot more responsibility.
  15. I actually think Cameron is a really nice player, but he's miscast on this team imo due to the lack of a table setter at 2b or SS that would allow him to slide down in the order where he more naturally fits. Cameron was miscast by the interim manager as a leadoff hitter. He should probably hit 2, 6 or 5 in our lineup depending on where you rank him as a hitter compared to Hart and Hardy.(ignoring my opinions on optimizing a lineup and going with a traditional lineup) Career lines Roberts .266/.342/.366/.708 Cameron .250/.340/.448/.788 Weeks .245/.352/.406/.758 3-year splits Roberts .272/.346/.369/.715 Cameron .251/.339/.462/.801 Weeks .247/.358/.411/.769 I guess I just don't see where Roberts is better than Cameron or a better option than Weeks as a lead off hitter. In fact of those 3, Weeks looks to be the best lead off option. I am not sure the stats are close enough to think that Roberts would improve enough to draw even by moving to a more pitcher friendly park.
  16. I think we should offer Powell 6/$140M to stay. I men PBP announcers rarely get hurt so the contract is low risk. Seriously though, I would hate to "hear" Powell leave. I don't listen to radio much, but he is very good and his weekly show has very good interviews.
  17. No doubt spells the end for Weeks. Edit Thought I should clarify the sarcasm.
  18. Big news. We finally signed somebody. Jason Bourgeois http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/35021194.html
  19. They are both pitchers though. Pitchers get hurt at a very high rate. Just over half the years and less than half the money for pitchers that are pretty close to equal in talent. I would take Sheets easily.
  20. I will third, but 3 years is stretching the length of a contract i would like for a free agent. 3/$36M would be pretty cheap.
  21. In that case the projections for Escobar and Gamel seem a little low. I mean Gamel did put up a line of .500/.500/1.000/1.500 line for the Brewers and Escobar was .500/.500/.500/1.000.
  22. Wow, that's a really high projection for Escobar. Pretty optimistic considering he has never had a SLG or OPS that high and only topped that OBP once. Trade JJ Hardy.
  23. Let's not forget Hart had an OBP of .353 just last year. His OPS was .892. He has had almost 3 full years worth of PA in his career. There is a good chance that 2008 was just a down year for him and he will be closer to his 2007 stats than his 2008 stats next year. Let's not get carried away with calling Hart a bad player. He has been a good hitter all through his career including the minors.
  24. Not much of an upgrade. That is only marginally better than Cameron with worse defense and I doubt he does much better than Hart. In fact his 3 year splits are worse than Hart's. It doesn't even pay to compare him offensively to our infielders since he can't play there. I don't disagree with what it would take to get him, but I see no way we would trade any of the players you talked about for a marginal upgrade.
  25. I think that we were lucky to miss out on Cordero and have Gagne sort of fall on his face with us. I am happy if it left a sour taste in their mouth since I think closers are misused and overpaid. I really hope we don't go out and spend money on a closer. Look at the Suppan contract. Imagine if we had that money tied up in a closer.
