  1. You should be looking at Plate Appearances not At Bats. Braun has the most at bats because he doesn't walk. You never lose plate appearances or at bats moving a guy up the order.
  2. You forgot to mention that the leadoff hitter gets the most AB with nobody on so a HBP, BB and single have about the same value for a leaoff hitter. A guy who gets on at a good clip and has a high OBP/BA split is ideal for the leadoff spot.
  3. I am not sure who will be interested in this or how useful it is, but while looking at LD% and BABIP graphs for the Brewers I ran across this graph. It shows Hardy's FB/GB ratio shifting towards more groundballs starting around the middle of last year. Not sure how closley it coincides with Hardy's drop in HR numbers, but it seems to cross over to more ground balls about the time his HR numbers started to taper off.
  4. Here is what Al posted in his blog a few weeks back, updated and a cool graph of Weeks career BABIP. Edit: Graph for Hall What the heck, in for a dime in for a dollar Hart Braun Kendall Hardy Fielder
  5. Per The Hardball Times Line Drive Percentage. Baseball Info Solutions tracks the trajectory of each batted ball and categorizes it as a groundball, fly ball or line drive. LD% is the percent of batted balls that are line drives. Line drives are not necessarily the hardest hit balls, but they do fall for a hit around 75% of the time. http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/statpages/glossary/ If a line dirve falls for a hit approx 75% of the time I would think that hitting more linedrives would lead to a higher BABIP. Edit: I will take Weeks to have a higher OBP. I think Braun would have to hit roughly .310+ to maintain a .350 OBP and I am not convinced Braun will hit over .300 yet.
  6. I agree that we can't blame Fielder for that injury. If Gallardo gets over to the base sooner to cover it Fielder doesn't have to try making a tag.
  7. Of course he is. He managed some of the worst teams, talent wise, in Brewers history. Ben Sheets was also a "loser" up until earlier this year.
  8. Much like a W-L record for a manager, talent has much more to do with sweeps than anything else.
  9. Not sure. Depends on how much his defense would affect the pitching staff. Maybe the bulpen wears out even sooner and we lose more games. Maybe when factoring in defense the Counsellino platoon out produces Braun. Besides, he was hurt in spring training and needed time to heal so that wasn't an option.
  10. That's fine. If they want to put more base runners on I wouldn't argue.
  11. I don't think anybody ever said he hasn't done well to this point, just that there are questions about how good he will be going forward. His LHP vs numbers from last year greatly inflated his overall stats(.450BA/.516OBP/.964SLG/1.480OPS). I doubt he is likley to put up numbers like that on a consistent year to year basis. Also his OBP has been largley BA driven, which is a concern. We don't know if he will be able to maintain his .361 BABIP from last year either. It is safer to assume he will not. I still don't like giving out contracts to pre arby players, but at worst he will be paid like a league average corner outfielder at the end of it(I am just guessing $12M will be the going rate, Jenkins got in the neighborhood of $7M I beleive).
  12. I still feel the only message firing a manager midseason sends is ''we give up, the season is over."
  13. I agree, just saying that we had nothing to gain from keeping Sexson at the time.
  14. Even if we didn't get a good return on Sexson, what reason did we have to keep him? Even if Sexson was worth 2 more wins a year than all those players combined, we still would have had bad records.
  15. The only thing keeping his numbers respectable is his walks. And frankly, we need him to drive in runs - not get on base for Hall and Hardy. I hate it when players clog the bases. Prince is 0-10 in his career vs Maholm. It would be better to use Fielder's LHP splits over the course of his career instead of head to head match up numbers. Edit: Also, I don't think steals should be called from the bench. Players should either be given the green light(steal if you are pretty sure you can make it) or told not to steal.
  16. But when players reach base by means other than hits they are still making a contribution even whe they are not hitting. Weeks has been making a contribution all year even when he is not hiitting. Braun on the other hand who almost never walks, makes no contribution unless he is hitting.
  17. Maybe I thought Hall was the DH. Even though Hall may be better than either Braun(he is) or Weeks(maybe, maybe not), he still shouldn't be in the infield. He trys to make throws he shouldn't and plays ground balls off to the side. Weeks and Fielder at least try to get in front of ground balls so they don't wave at them going by. All we did at 3B this year is go from historicly bad to bad. Speed and hitting ability is like height in basketball, you just can't teach it. I have no problem with getting the best hitter and teaching him defense. It is alot easier to learn to track a fly ball then it is to teach a guy to hit a slider 400'. I agree. The problem is that other than Hart, nobody stayed in the minors long enough to learn anything. I understand why all our players were promoted when they were, but I think our philosophy for drafting and developing young players needs some tweaking.
  18. I am not sure that they fixed the audio. I think all the fans left so it got quiet.
  19. Well he didn't criticise the players, and actually turned the press conference away from the tired talk about this guy or that guy not performing, so no I don't think it upset the players. I think how he treats players behind closed doors is much more important than how Yost treats the media.
  20. Yost should not have addressed the rumor at all. It was a terrible distraction that obviously hurt our play on the field tonight.
  21. The Ryan Braun callup last year comes to mind as far as breaking news. It was on here several hours before anywhere else.
  22. To be honest, I have never been impressed with Hall as an infielder. Right now we are trying to play defense with a catcher, an infielder, 5 outfielders and a DH.
  23. I would have no problem with Yost picking a lineup out of a hat once a month. Taking all our everyday starters, put the pitcher in the 8th hole and picking the rest out of a hat.
  24. Here's my line of thinking. People are blaming Yost for poor fundamentals on our team. We have players on our team playing out of position(Hall, Weeks, Fielder) who were brought up quickly through our system(Melvin) and were drafted with huge flaws in their game(Jack Z). I think there is a system wide failure in the front office. I think this team can turn things around, but our draft needs to turn somewhat towards drafting more complete players and leaving them in the minors to get more polish like in the case of Corey Hart.
  25. I think Weeks actually is the perfect candidate for the leaoff spot. His large split in BA and OBP means that he is often getting on base by means other than hitting. The leadoff spot is the spot in the order that comes up most often with no runners on base which means that a single, BB and HBP have roughly the same value. Unless of course you think Weeks is really a below .200 hitter, which over his career he has shown he is not. Hitting in the leaoff spot most of the time no less.
