  1. Well, the over 2 year old OG Droid is getting two security updates. I hope that puts to rest the idea that security updates aren't provided when needed. As I said before, just because the phone doesn't receive a security patch after 1.5 years, doesn't mean it isn't being supported. It means no new issues have come to light that need to be addressed. Link
  2. Personally I liked the first one much better, but I'm not sure why. It just seemed like a better experience even though this one had superior game play. In other words, I felt like I should have liked the new one better but I didn't.
  3. I don't think you should use the word "we" here. The general perception I'm getting on local radio (I live in Chicago) is that everyone understands its going to be a few years before the Cubs compete again. They wont judge the new manager on if they kick butt NOW at all. Instead of kick ass, I should have said "take charge and take control." I really wasn't referring to a Mike Ditkaesque kick ass guy. That is the furthest thing from what today's players need on the bench. (With the exception of Zambrano who really does need someone to kick his ass!) Whether or not his brother comes with Mike Maddux is an intrigueing choice as I'm not sure there has ever been a successful pitcher/pitching coach as a manager. Roger Craig certainly wasn't, Larry Rothschild failed at it, jury still out on Bud Black. Can you guys think of one? EDIT: All right I found 1 - but Dallas Green has a limited body of work as a manager. Finished out 1 season, Took the Phillies to a WS title in 1980, then a 1981 split season in which they finished 1st in the first half. No more managing after that. I read it as a guy who wants to win now. Thanks for clarifying you meant it as a disciplinarian. I'm torn, with young guys sometimes thats a good thing, sometimes you want a guy who can relate to them too and make the game fun.
  4. I know the feeling, I finished the story mode of Arkham City last night (but at about 40% of the total game) and have had Uncharted Drakes Deception sitting there for however long unopened. I have no idea when I will get to Skyrim which will probably take me two months to finish. I think theres a new Assasins Creed too this xmas with another Mass Effect in the spring. The nice thing is I can probably wait a bit to buy those games when they go on sale for $40 or so.
  5. Again, many updates are provided beyond just updating to the new version of the Android OS. The chart in your link has something for getting support updates and most of them go on past a year. I'd think after a year or so most phones would have the kinks worked out so they wouldn't need additional service updates, so I'm not too sure what that chart shows other than some of the phones not being updated to the latest Android OS. So no, I don't think the research is flawed, I think the wrong conclusions are being drawn.
  6. I would go as far as to say being stuck in a single dugout for 162 afternoons a season actually prevents you in some ways from experiencing as many important in-game decisions as a fan or executive who can flip back and forth between several games at a time. Its similar to the online poker scene. Teenagers could camp out in their parents basement playing 4-5 tables at a time until 5 in the morning. Then you started seeing 18 year olds sitting across the table from veterans and having the same amount of experience. Would they do as well at the table as someone who had been sitting through all those hands in person and reading the other players, feeling the flow of the game, and acting when necessary? Probably not. But strategy wise, they would know the correct play just as many baseball fans know it was stupid for RR to bring in Loe 8th inning after 8th inning when he is a ROOGY GB pitcher.
  7. I disagree. I think a lot of us here could watch the results of this type of an interview and make a pretty good decision on the thought process of a manager. How to conduct a practice and relate to the players is something you have to learn by playing or coaching at minor league levels. Watching tons of baseball your whole life though gives you a pretty good foundation for in game assessments.
  8. Its not so much the decision the potential manager makes, its the process and what information they look at that is important. This is why RR was so maddening. Beyond the decision itself, he would usually justify it in a way that you could tell he just isn't very logical or analytical. Theo has said that is what he looks at and that they try to create a stressful situation for the interviewee by getting in his face and making him make a quick decision.
  9. This could be bad for sprint if they don't figure this problem out. Link
  10. You're right. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif You said "iOS5 runs on the 3GS I've heard (though not with all the features)." By the time I posted, I somehow read in "Siri." The point I was trying to make is that not all iOS 5 features are available on every device. I'm fine with that, just like I'm fine with Android-based devices not including every new feature. However, security updates need to be made available expeditiously to those who don't want to root their devices, and they should be made available for all devices that are likely to still be under contract. It'll be interesting to see how well Apple does with the iPhone 3GS. At the point that the 3GS is likely to be discontinued, three years will have elapsed since its release. With two year contracts being required, it'd be reasonable to expect two more years of security updates. Agreed about the security updates, and as I said before, there is no indication Android phone makers are doing this at a rate worse or better than Apple.
  11. Not all of us. A lot of people wanted Sandberg to manage the Cubs this past season. The results would have been no different. Ryne may be a good manager some day but we need someone to come in and kick ass NOW. I wish him well unless he goes to the Cards. I don't think you should use the word "we" here. The general perception I'm getting on local radio (I live in Chicago) is that everyone understands its going to be a few years before the Cubs compete again. They wont judge the new manager on if they kick butt NOW at all.
  12. It appears now some hackers have gotten Siri to work just fine on the iPhone 4. This article speculates that Apple did not allow iPhone 4 users to have Siri because they either wanted to drive sales of the 4s or because the server that Siri uses couldn't handle the volume. So for all the uproar your previous article was making about the Nexus One not getting the ICS update, here is a key feature being left out of their last phone for no apparent reason.
  13. From the locked thread Can Mat Gamel be the answer at first. Of all the popular misconceptions about Gamel, this is the one that gets me the most and it comes up over and over again. He actually has reverse splits all through the minors. I don't understand why so many fans who have clearly not seen him play much and who know little about his game feel the need to bash him.
  14. I'm not entirely convinced of that. The fans spend their own money on the team. The ownership invests their money in the team and makes a profit. Now if the owner started spending an equal percentage of his own personal money on building a winner as a fan does of their money on season tickets, cable TV and merchandise, then OK I'd buy that statement Mark's got millions & millions of dollar in his own bank accounts and investments. If he really wanted a Champion, he could spend some of that and increase the payroll and resign Prince AND sign Reyes. A fanatic would do it in a heartbeat if they had the disposable income. I would The team doesn't pay for Mark's travel expenses or home in MKE, which he basically has so he can follow the team as a fan. And Mark doesn't have the disposable income of some owners. In fact, while majority owner, he still has people to answer to who have put up a lot of money on the team.
  15. David Freese didn't get called up to the majors until he was 26, and didn't become a starter until he was 27. Does that make him a non-prospect?Ryan Howard didn't play a full season until he was 26, when he won an MVP award. This is what often happens when you have a successful big league team or a great player already at a position.
  16. FWIW, we will actually be getting an additional $20 mil per season from our new TV deal that starts in 2013. So hopefully the payroll will increase maybe $15 mil not this year but the next.
  17. Are you suggesting that the majority of Android users root their devices? Is there data somewhere that shows that? I don't know. All of the polls I've seen online are probably skewed data so I probably spoke incorrectly and should have said that most of the people I know and on online polls have been running Gingerbread for a long time now. I certainly wouldn't expect current devices to be updated with every new feature. For example, you mentioned that Siri doesn't run on an iPhone 3GS. Actually, it doesn't run on an iPhone 4 either. I never mentioned that. I know Siri doesn't run on the iPhone4. Not really sure what you are getting at here. If features have to be designed for the least common denominator, progress would be hindered. However, I think it's reasonable to expect security and bug fixes while devices are still under contract. Generally, that would mean two years from the point that a device was discontinued. I agree, but it sounds like we are talking about two different things here. The article you posted talks about how a nearly 2 year old phone wont be getting Ice Creme Sandwich and I talked about how the Thunderbolt just got Gingerbread after a long wait. Thats different than receiving updates or bug fixes. I believe the Thunderbolt has had 2 updates already before the Gingerbread update. If a security flaw or bug turned up after two years with the original Nexus I don't think that article was saying they wouldn't provide a fix for it.
  18. How does his career path fit the age he is supposed to be? As a 21 year old rookie he was mashing, hitting for power with patience. Yea he is good, but thats not the standard career path at all. And he was already filled out his year in the minors. There is nothing standard about him.
  19. It could also have to do with Sprint's Android phones over the last year running on their WIMAX network, which the iPhone can't use.
  20. Not true. One of the great things about Android is that you aren't at the mercy of anyone for updates to Android and especially to your Apps. Can you reconcile what you're saying with what's in this article?Sure, the article agrees with me: I said you aren't at the mercy of anyone for updates to Android and thats true. You don't need to wait for official Google support to upgrade your phone to the newest OS. I don't know why the Nexus One won't be supported, but owners who want to hold onto their two year old phone when ICS comes out can still upgrade if they want, it just wont be officially supported. Two years is about the time most people upgrade anyway. Why isn't it officially supported? If I had to guess its just not as smooth of an experience as Google wants due to the older technology. iOS5 runs on the 3GS I've heard (though not with all the features) but not the 3. So iOS supports a 6 month older phone than Google is going to support with ICS. Thats probably about the cutoff point (2 years) where the tech is too old to continue support. Now, if you aren't very tech savvy and you want the official updates, I will admit that certain companies have been lousy about getting the latest software upgrades out to their users. My HTC Thunderbolt comes to mind. Gingerbread was released, then pulled because of a few bugs, and was just finally released officially again by HTC in the last couple of weeks. However, most people have been running Gingerbread for months though on their Thunderbolt because its been available all over the internet in very bug free versions.
  21. Not to mention, Braun has never called out another player for watching their HR. Thats the problem I think most people have with Pujols watching his.
  22. Nothing negative has been directed at Napoli like it was at Nyjer. Totally different situation.
  23. There was a someone's word against someone else's word situation with the Napoli incident...oh wait a minute...
  24. Hes playing the race card because its the correct card to play in this instance.
